Dear Diary,

After meditating and watching my friends do their own things for the past eight weeks, especially with Traubon(He seems to have this fixation on the person who sold some magic item to us by way of a friend of ours, I always forget her name. I will have to ask Maren again, what her name is.), I was hoping to continue to have some rest and relaxation and ponder the greater meaning of my purpose with my friends and my god, but as chance has it, Traubon heard some information about the Caravan Master and his death with a surviving child hidden in wagon. Maren decides to give testimony as to our innocents and somehow we get sucked into investigating the cause. I thought that the man was hired to bait us and ran away, maybe he was just a loose end they wanted to cut. I never am sure about these things. It is easier to just listen to what ever everyone says and follow their directions. Sometimes I am not sure what they are saying. Anyways, Just as we get there, we find out that child knows me. I am dumbfounded as I have never seen her before. Not sure why but Maren wanted me to stay in hallway first, then after three minutes was called in by Maren. Which we then sent message to have rest of group come help with investigation. We need Alphonse to magically check out some of the weird stuff the Keystone Cops have found. Then the little girl smiles at me and I am caught off guard as she changes into a large Demon that is familiar. We have fought this thing before while riding with Caravan Master.

It is a vicious battle, it must have improved itself as most of my attacks miss and those that do hardly do any damage at all. I feel helpless but at same time very protective of all those who cannot defend themselves against this thing. Maren tried to cast some kind of spell and was disrupted or something which he promptly ran to back. By then the Demon called forth an ice wall and blocked Maren from helping me. I do not know how he did it, but several seconds later the wall disappeared. Which the Demon promptly called forth another wall at same spot between Maren and me. Leaving me to fight it alone. After what seems like only seconds, a blast opens a way in the ice wall with Maren stumbling through. In the meantime, I have been pummeling this thing with almost no affect. Maren finally sends some pretty colored lights at the thing that seems to do lots of damage to it. Go Maren... Soon the Demon fights solely on Maren and ignores me.  I feel even more shame for not being able to protect him. After what seems like an eternity, Maren yells at me to leave, which to me sounds like being a coward. Unfortunately my youth has scarred me and I refused his demand. Even the second time he yells at me to run away, I refuse. I each time tell him to leave first. I am sure I can help better this way...

Before I know it, Maren crumples to the ground from one of the Demons attacks. I do not know what came over me, I just acted. I as fast as I could, ran to him and picked him up, I had just enough time to notice a big bloody gash on his neck almost as big as his mouth. Hmm, yes his mouth is big and so this gash. Without thinking, I jump through the hole of the ice wall and run down the hallway to the exit, as soon as I get through to the hallway, I taunt the unholy thing to chase me, I did not know it can teleport so many times. I hope there is only a limited amount of times it can do this. It pops in at the far end of the hallway I just went to, effectively blocking my exit out. So as fast as I can, I run to the door on my right just before the Demon can reach, but the way is blocked by several cops who look like they are preparing to do battle. I do not think they are a match. But I guess they have to try. Or someone with more power comes along. Oh that is right, I forgot my other friends are coming. I wonder where they are? I hope they come as fast as they can.

The woman was badly wounded. Probably a severed abdominal artery thought Brenna. It amazed her that the woman could even stand. Let alone run. But that was exactly what they were doing. We found the location of Darth Sirius and Senji (Xevius) and went there to deal with him. With the help of Senji (who we managed to turn back Light), we managed to kill Sirius. The only problem was Obachi turning Dark, and unfortunately he escaped.

The galaxy is safe from the Sith menace--for now...

Dear Diary,

We are at Diamond Lake and heading back to Irongate. We hitch a ride with caravan that is heading towards Irongate. Caravan Master(Joordon) is willing to pay us 380 total to protect his product(snake oil, spices, herbs).

Takes about a full day. Some of us have noticed the CM has been acting weird and some has been poisoned with food he served. Then later on, a large bone demon, and 5 bearded devils teleported in and pointed at us and demanded' Give us the rod.'

We promptly take combat stance and with not response attack. Found out they can teleport. Damn they are hard to keep up. Thank you Alphonse for the Haste spell. Half way through battle, Bone Demon calls forth a horde of Lemures, Del after several rounds remembers to use the new weapons on horde, destroying many at each attack. Duhhhh. The big Bone Demon teleported away when he failed to acquire rod(Bone Demon gave name of his boss, but for the life of me, cannot remember name). Then soon afterwards, the caravan, left in a hurry. Since most of us did not have enough speed to catch him, we let him go.

Then we traveled to Irongate. Found a hotel and rested. Maren found out that his girlfriend is here. He did his smoochie thing and got her to at least trade some items for us. I personally think we need more cash for living expenses. I think she is nice person. Would be nice to see them married with little Marens running around. On second thought, maybe not.

Till tomorrow. Benlore.

Tonight we did character creation and got into the story just a little bit with a quasi-random encounter, which is a little less cliched than, "An old man comes up to you in the bar and says, 'I need a favor from you.'"

Maximum age of 17, unless specifically approved.  In other words, a great backstory and character concept might make this happen.  The restriction not only fits with the Red Dawn concept, but also specifically limits you on the starting occupations you can choose, although I checked and there are 7 still available.
Equipment:  Starting gear will be anything that your character would take into a 1980‘s high school.  So Swiss Army knives are still OK, laptops and handguns are not OK.  Think like a student, not like a survivalist.  Anything that might get you sent to the principal’s office is off limits.
The same holds true for skills feats.  I wouldn’t spend a lot of points on Computer Use, for example, unless your dad owns the local Radio Shack and you spent a lot of time on a TRS-80 and think this is really important for your concept.
I need a very basic bio, including a short list of family members, both in town and anyone that might be relevant “out there”.  (i.e. parents Ward & June Cleaver, younger sister, older brother joined the Navy, etc)  Let me be VERY clear on this:  You are all in a small town in the middle of nowhere, Utah, and there is no orphanage in town.  If you REALLY want to be an orphan, then tell me who you are living with, foster parents, grandparent, aunt and uncle, whomever.  Also, if you decide that you lack parents, you get to tell me why.  Did your parents die in a horrible accident, or is your dad just a mean drunk?  Considering we’re dealing with teenagers, this is the only opportunity to provide anything close to a backstory.
I'm not going to be dealing with any kind of PEP system, because D20 Modern already has action points in the system, but I will throw additional XP around for blog posts, food runs, etc.
I'm not looking for uber optimized characters, nor do I need characters with really twisted backstories, so don't spend hours plotting either of them out.  A "normal" teenager is pretty OK at this point, I will twist them up for you as we go forward.
UPDATE: Stat generation will be based the 25-point buy system, with a minimum score of 8, a per core book.

Character Creation:

Character creation follows the rules presented in the core rulebook, except where noted below.

Characters begin play at 1st level.

Ability Scores

Instead of rolling your ability scores, Dawn of Defiance uses the planned generation method as described on page 18, except you build a character with 28 points. Each ability score starts at 8. Use the following guidelines to determine how many points a specific ability score costs.  9 - 1 pt, 10 - 2pts, 11 - 3 pts, 12 - 4pts, 13 - 5pts, 14 - 6pts, 15 - 8pts, 16 - 10pts, 17 - 13pts, 18 - 16 pts

Heroic Classes and Class Features

All heroic classes in the core rulebook are available for play, although due to the Galactic Empire’s merciless policy towards Jedi, Force-using characters should be careful where they display their powers.

Characters begin play with maximum credits at 1st level.

Equipment

All equipment with a military or illegal rating is unavailable for purchase at character creation, with the following exceptions: heavy blaster pistol and hold-out blaster pistol. You must pay the additional license fee for any available equipment that has a restriction rating (see page 118 of the core rulebook). At 1st level, you need not make any skill checks to obtain an available item with a restriction rating; simply pay the additional license fee, and the item’s all yours.

Destiny

When you create your character, you may choose a destiny from the following list presented under Sample Destinies on page 113 of the core rulebook: destruction, discovery, rescue, or redemption.

The Force

The Force rules present in the core rulebook with are used, with the following exceptions:

• You may not reduce your Dark Side Score in any manner except through GM intervention.

Campaign Background

The Dawn of Defiance campaign opens some months after the rise of the Empire, with the Clone Wars a very recent and vivid memory for most beings in the galaxy. The Empire has begun tightening its grip on star systems throughout the galaxy, and Darth Vader stands at the newly declared Emperor’s right hand, crushing any opposition and hunting down the last remnants of the Jedi Order. In these short months since the fall of the Republic, many have joined the Empire willingly, including the Core Worlds whose Human nobles stand to benefit a great deal from its tyranny.

Similarly, many others have begun rebelling against Imperial oppression, finding themselves driven out of their homes (or worse) and forced to live in a galaxy that tolerates no opposition to the Empire

Here are approved house rules for the DoD Campaign:

Medpacks: A character can benefit from multiple medpack usages per day. Each additional use of a medpack past the first increases the DC by 5.

(possible, not yet approved) Second Wind: A second wind can be used once per encounter, or once every five minutes out of combat. If you have a feat or talent that gives an extra second wind, you gain an additional per encounter use of second wind.

Fool's Luck now grants Competency bonus, not Luck.

Climb, Jump, and Swim will be treated as a single  'Athletics' skill.

We travel through the astral - - we come to the bands that Nezbit had mentioned to us.   In comparing his notes to what we see, I observe that  the bands seem to be tapping energy of the ley lines on the prime/oerth to create this bounding energy.  This seems to be capturing the energy of a world to create an mini-multiverse.

As we are sitting about, a portal opens. Two celestials come out, carrying a box.  Turns out the celestials are really bone devils.

We show up in Istara's realm and discover it is under assault - B'durna is keying in the gate codes to explode this whole place.

Istara tell us - that he is using the last of his power to stop the universe around us and give us secrecy, privacy.  What I have put togheter - - what is behind this, is asmodeus.  Asmodeus is the lord of all devils, the king of the nine hells.  All other devils answer to him.  He is the king of the princes of hell.   Asmodeus, has, for time eternal, been trying to become a full god by collecting worshippers that will allow him to rise to being a full deity.  This world represents an attempt to do that.  By encapsulating the entire world, he hopes to raise up followers to his cause and become a true deity.

This place was constructed by mortal magic - the number 5 has come up so many times, I know there are 5 places or keys - that will guide this place out of Asmodeus' control.  Given B'durna and Asmodeus are destroying this place - i think i have unlocked all that you need to know.

You must not communicate this information (other than that you are looking for the 5 locations) - the city of moil will give you the info about the 5 locations.   In order for you to have this knowledge and not be immediately destroyed as I am, we will have to fight each other, and the battle will have to look real.

Time resumes - Asmodeus shows up.

We escape to.. darkness.

Nothing is here.  Nothing is apparently one of 3 beings that existed before the creation of the multiverse --- the others being the Queen of the Doors, and the Quat'l.   This nothing - is the one that wants to undo everything.  He gave great secrets - to vecna - to others - this thing thrives on the lack of hope - Those that disbelieve in existance - fuel him.

Some gods fear this thing.  For example- on Toril - souls that do not worship are locked away in the wall of suffering.  All these things.. I hope to undo.

Long ago - a wizard messed with time - creating 2 time streams.  When that was corrected, this one spun off - and I captured it, kept it existant, yet hidden from the rest of the multiverse and the prying eyes of gods.  The world you know - goes back perhaps 1000-2000 years.  I have been erasing and recreating this world for millenia upon millenia. I have put rules in place so that knowledge is forgotten.  This fuels the rise and fall of suffering.  And you have been excellent stewards in giving me those kinds of souls.

There is a cult of the priest of jubilex - we see his face as his belief was shattered and his soul winked out - much like Tavernus - with Weijass.  We see us fighting on the demon-wing - she calls on her goddess, and her power fades away....  and again with Rahotep.  You have been my servants through all existance.  You have created a wealth of souls that don't have hope - fuelling my power not only here but in the greater multiverse.  You have been such good servants.  NOw that you have learned what you have learned -- we must talk.  You have the unique ability to help me destroy not only this world, but the next.  I need only the brightest burning hopes of a few powerful souls so that I can reveal myself to the Queen of DOors and the Quat'l.  I can see it in you - plotting ways -- eventually you will break, you will lose that hope.  And when you do, it will be enough for me to break free.  Go find the 5 things, see what you can undo.  But eventually you will lose hope, give up, and you will be mine.

Good luck - I'll be waiting

The blackness fades, and we find ourselves on the island of new Verdinica

All conditions are cleared as we rest up.

We finished up on the Fenix and got the diamond, which Angel promptly grabbed. On the surface, she, the kelp, and the diamond had some kind of joining which resulted in all the kelp in the world Awakening--all the citizens of the planet joined in shortly thereafter. Wow!

We made it back to Longbow more or less uneventfully, and came up with a plan to get Emperor Avery out to the research station (use communication data from Lucan to fake the Invincible being out here), send the other end of some FTL communication equipment back to Uzdiki, and hopefully convince Avery that this is new, cool, and we shouldn't be killed.

It's a good plan, but pretty high-risk, high-reward...

We meet Claris and he decides he is going to retire and build an inn.

We meet Pelor and discover we've been gone nearly a year.

Pelor has learned, through the church, that the demon and devil cults destroying places of knowledge (rival religion texts, libraries in cities, etc) are getting extra powers when they do so.  If knowledge disapprears from the prime, it will disapprear from the outer realms as well.  This is kinda bad, Ray... .mkay?

SF cities have been burning, organized cities have been falling apart - the areas between cities grow increasingly dangerous.

We need to find out what is causing all this - so we will go on Istara's quest,....
