We were doing pretty well at getting beaten up by regular goblins.
Then the druid and his animal companion showed up...
½ pep 15*level XP start.
No Mike today. Brian will be playing Cesar. Thanks, Brian. 1/2pep.
We had fought the Vargoyle. We search the room. Nothing special. Take 20 on the pool. Nothing of interest. K:Dungeoneering. Why is the water not drying up? Detect Magic. Faint conjuration!
Where to? We continue past and another spiral stairway. This one goes up and is also collapsed.
Do we keep dungeon delving? Slap Tsuto around? Get the ashes? Find the succubi?
We head back south to the passage we skipped. It goes 400’ before ending in a collapse. We find nothing. No secret door. Just a big pile of rocks. This place is all adventured out. (it's a verb now) Let’s head back to the Mayor.
The guards inform us that Tsuto is still at the jail under 24 hour watch. Apparently he was trying to put together some kind of noose from pieces of his own clothes. We think about slapping him around for info once the Sheriff comes back.
We instead exposition at Mayor Deverin. We suggest de-sanctifying the rage pool and bricking up the passageway. She wants us to go back and de-nasty the pool. Time for some smashing. After buying a large sledge, (we don’t let Solomon come to the store with us) we head down and set a butt-load of ready actions. Solomon deals himself 1dmg sixteen times to summon sinspawn and we “use up” all the wrath points.
At one point, Cluddox gets bored and tries a fancy uppercut with his massive hammer. Unfortunately he loses his balance and starts tipping toward the pool! Only Cesar’s impressive speed and athletics keeps Clud from paying for his foolishness with a rage bath. Cluddox owes him one!
Paul hand waves the 16 individual combats and instead the fighters take 7dmg each. After its all done we have defeated 16 sinspawn.
XP: 2nd 320
XP: 3rd 320
There is still an aura of transmutation from the pool. The conjuration aura is faded. Cluddox takes a mighty swing with the sledgehammer and... CLANG!!! Clud begins jumping around and blowing on his fingers. Solomon takes the sledge and casts magic weapon on the large hammer. Clud swings again. Just as before, his blow is less than impressive and Clulddox offers Solomon the stink eye..
We head back and tell the Mayor about our failure. She is a bit disappointed but suggests the rest of our plan should proceed. The sheriff should be back tomorrow with his guards so we will all meet at lunch to compare notes.
Sheriff Hemlock has come back with a whopping (sarcasm) 8 very green recruits. He’s obviously not in a good mood. Ameiko and Sir Jasper are also at the meeting. Hemlock wants to see the journal.
Hemlock: We’re hoping Shalelu will be back in a week or so with any news about the larger attack. I recognize the name Thistletop. It’s the small island that looks like a severed head. Thank you for your help while I was gone. It seems that Tsuto is the best source of info right now.
The rest of our meeting is exposition, so we decide to pay the traitor a visit. As we come on in Solomon and Cluddox get ready for good cop/bad cop. Solomon is diplomacy and Clud is intimidate.
What do we ask?
“Where is your girlfriend?”
21 good cop. 27 bad cop. He’s been sitting at the back of his cell with only natural healing for the last few days. Certain clothing items have been removed. He only glares at us. Solomon and Cluddox begin their work. Soon Tsuto is laughing at Clud’s threats. He believes his girl will soon have the power to bring him back to life. Unless we find something worse than death, he has zero fucks to give.
Tsuto: Have you never heard of demons? Succubi? I would gladly truck with such creatures for her.
Us: What is her cause?
Tsuto: To wipe this town out. It’s full of people who lie, destroy, and shun people who are different. I came to help Ameiko. Give her one last chance. But she and you are no different from the other rule following nobodies of this town. Her father’s ashes will still fuel the ceremony on Thistletop! (Father Tobin, not Lonjiku) I’m done talking to you.
He doesn’t give us a timeline so we leave him to his hate. We relate the poor results to the Sheriff. We decide to wait for Shalelu and hope she has some information. We have plenty to keep busy while we wait for the elf to arrive with some much needed information.
The town sends workers down with us to brick up the smuggler’s tunnels. No incidents. The green recruits are being trained. Ameiko pays for much of that through the League. Sir Jasper is getting the Glassworks back up and running but the skilled labor needed makes things slow. Ameiko has a quiet funeral for her father. We all attend. Many of the League families and upper class of Sandpoint are also at the new church.
Cesar is at some point approached by the underworld of Sandpoint! Mike will have a nice surprise next week.
Ameiko has returned to the Rusty Dragon. It’s piled full for the first few days. Gossip and questions fly free. Cluddox is plied with drinks and gets a little loose tongued.
He spills the beans about some Nualia girl who was burned in a fire and turned into a demon! The name is certainly remembered around town. So as heros we are getting a +2 on diplomacy checks for all our heroics at the same time that everyone’s nerves are even more on edge because of Clud’s spilled secrets and half-baked rumors about a demon’s attentions on Sandpoint.
Camlo: Nice going Cluddox.
Solomon uses one of his favors at the House of Blue Stones to research the rune on the book we found.
Sihedron Rune. We find reference to Thassalon. It symbolized the seven virtues of rule.
Wealth, Fertility, Honest Pride, Abundance, Eager Striving, Righteous Anger, Rest.
He also finds odd mention of people considering this symbol to be evil or unlucky in some way. Finding this rune often led researchers to give up on the lead they were following. It’s found here and there in Magnimar libraries.
A few of us hear that a group of merchants who came in today were attacked by some goblins. There is a 500gp reward for bringing back a large pedigree horse that was taken by the gobbos. None of us are very interested. We surmise that there is no reward for horse bones.
Ameiko seems to be in better spirits. She’s changed her hairstyle at least three times this week!
She and us are asked to meet with Mayor Deverin. Hemlock is there as well. They are debating whether there is a trial for the goblins. Tsuto may also be tried but he needs to be transported to Magnimar. Hemlock doesn’t want to split his forces to risk transport but the Mayor notes that he is a focus point of contention for the community as well as being dangerous to keep around. She wants Ameiko’s opinion on waiting or sending him. Ameiko would be needed in Magnimar to testify.
Ameiko has no interest in going to the big city. She’s staying here so she doesn’t care if the trial is now or never.
Kendra wants our opinion… Much to her chagrin, we agree with Sheriff Hemlock and he talks down Her Mayorship to wait for the time being.
As we break up, the Mayor pulls Cluddox to the side and explains that, while he’s under the influence, reciting in graphic detail about all the atrocities we’ve uncovered isn’t helping the town’s morale. He quite sheepishly agrees.
We are roused somewhat earlier this morning. Shalelu has come to town. We are eager to meet with the beautiful elf. First, she is brought up to speed of events here.
She knows that some of the worst of the worst in the Hinterlands have somehow been brought together. There is some new charismatic leader among them. Best guess: Nualia. After talking a bit about Thistletop, we’re now guessing that it’s not just home to Ripnugget and his aptly named tribe, but the new location for this demon work. Shalelu hasn't been there, but she can find it, and wants to join us. We’re grateful for the help.
Best knowledge is the island has some building on it. Access is either a bridge or a tunnel. Entrance is covered by some of the worst undergrowth in the area.
We decide to approach through the forest. The coast is too uncertain.
Break for dinner!
As we leave, Mayor Deverin arrives, looking a bit upset at Shalelu. We’re not sure what that’s about so we just leave. Shalelu follows shortly.
Sha is ready but we aren’t. She isn’t going to travel with us while we are overburdened to 20’ speed. We pile Cesar and Solomon’s newly purchased bedrolls and rations into a large sack that Cluddox can carry and quickly drop if needed.
Let’s hit the dirty, dusty trail!
After a few miles, Sha turns left off the road and we enter the Nettlewood. A few hours in and nothing dangerous yet. We stop for a quick lunch. We proceed to 5:00ish. Solomon and Chamlo somehow stumble into a patch of burning nettle. Fortitude saves needed to avoid Dex damage. They both tough it out.
After 6:00 we find a thick patch of shrubbery which would actually hold about 4 of us. We decide a watch rotation.
Solomon & Cesar
Chano & Cluddox
Camlo & Shalelu
3 - 3 hour blocks will get us to 6:00 am with an hour to prepare.
On the first night, Cluddox notices a family of wild boar giving the smelly human camp a wide berth. He stays quiet and lets them pass.
For some of the morning, Sha follows a trail along the river, but soon notices it’s heading too far back into the forest. Later in the day she finds a trail leading back into the coastline! After heading the right way for a while she tells us to wait and jumps up a tree. She drops back down and relates that were on track to start entering the real “nest”. She could just see some roofs beyond the water from her tree. She tells us to begin watching the landmarks. Shrubs and thistles that don’t look natural. They’re sure to have set traps.
It doesn’t take us long to find a “thistle door”. A patch of the thistle looks fake… Cesar slowly steps ahead to scout. There’s no lock or anything. But it’s gonna take a full round action and a reflex save to open it and not get stabbed by giant thorns. He manages to open it safely.
It opens to reveal a literal nettle tunnel about 4’ high with hard packed earth. Squeeze time.
Is Cesar or Shalelu going first?
Cesar, followed by Cluddox.
Cesar soon notices an unnatural section of the wall. We approach the “door”. He pulls it open. No harm. More closed in tunnels. Left and right are squeezed “hallways”, while straight ahead seems to eventually open into a not-squeezed area.
Go through the door or stay on this side?
We enter the new area. We move ahead and the “roof” raises up. Two other thistle tunnels open into this chamber from other directions. There is a hole in the ground in the center of the room. Camlo hears sloshing waves coming from the hole. We poorly relate to each other and begin to move up.
We discover it is a shaft going a good 60’ down. We definitely hear the waves now. Sha looks with her elven eyes and sees some sort of sea cave at the bottom. There is no ladder or tracks though.
We continue on. More passages opening up this way and that to start a nice maze. Heading west we quickly hear the sounds of gobbos talking to each other. Sha says they are just arguing. Cesar sees another thistle door while we’re listening to the gobbos. But he’s gotta pass the “hallway” with the voices. Cesar and Camlo make a sneak past. As he passes, Cesar notices a campsite holding at least 8 goblins. A shallow fire pit in the floor.
Unfortunately there is no way in Hell the rest of us are getting past unnoticed. Cluddox couldn’t sneak up on a dead goblin dog.
Sha and us decide on a surprise attack. Camlo tries to sneak up to ready a better shot.
::Insert sound of loud twig being stepped on::
