In this episode: The party accidentally murders someone. The barbarian takes a half-dozen natural 20's to the face. The super-ghoul comes within one full-round action of a TPK. And we all learn to hate corn.
Full pep for late
Paul gives Kevin a quick update. Cluddox had some success at praying to Lady Desna. He realizes he’s on a path of violence and execution. Desna has helped Clud see the errors of his free rage. Perhaps now Cayden will be able to help further. Or Cluddox will be converting to Desna soon....
We are at the Hambley farm. Beginning to move south toward the group of four scarecrows. Single file down the narrow path. We make them out better about 40’ away. Still some cover. They're in the corn, not the path. Recap:
Ghouls: Undead. Love graveyards. Holy water hurts them. Can be turned. Have paralyzing claws. Can cause Ghoul fever. Rumors of intelligent, civilized ghouls deep underground.

Cluddox cries, “No! Don’t do that again!” He pulls the costuming away to find a gaunt farmer looking a lot like the guy in the barracks. He has Ghoul fever… and a force weapon induced lethal wound. Cluddox cuts the man down. Camlo says a few words for him.

We continue along the path toward the farmhouse. We see another two up north. A single Scarecrow is up ahead about 60’. We approach the same way. Cluddox first. He gets about 40’ away and starts throwing corn cobs at it until it moves. Eventually he gets a reaction and it starts thrashing unintelligibly.
Solomon: begins to move up.
Clud: Runs up and risks a grab at the mask! It’s a human! Young boy about 13. He’s got the fever.
We decide to leave him there. Sadly, it’s the best place we can keep him.
We move to the north to check the two Scarecrows. Cluddox does the corn thing again to S1. No response so he moves to investigate. This causes S2 to start thrashing.

Solomon takes a moment to heal us. Camlo doesn’t like being last and Solomon knows it.
S1 appears to be a “real” scarecrow.
We head up to the barn. A 12’high stone head of a helmed warrior makes the shape of the barn quite odd. Another part of old Thassilonia. The farmhouse is the smaller building. We can make out some disarray as there is a body lying outside the stable entrance. The barn door is askew. The farmhouse is constructed mostly of stone. Single story. A cart out front. Front door is closed, no sign of movement. We decide to sidle the barn and check on the scarecrow we saw just north of the barn. We get close enough to discover it’s just a scarecrow.
We approach back to the barn through the corn. Clud’s 4 stealth doesn’t impress Cesar and we soon see the back of the barn. No activity. We wait while Cesar ninja's to the front of the barn.
He’s at the ajar barndoor. The smell is overwhelming. A tangle of bone and partially eaten corpses. Mostly animals but a few human bones too. It seems empty but there are some dark shadows in the corners.
He sneaks back to the group and relays the news. We all go into the huge barn and nothing attacks. The smell is awful, though. We search. Nothing notable is found. Name something you find in a barn. 3-4 humans, 3 horses, 2 cows.
We stay in the barn’s main doorway and Cesar sneaks up to the house. The pig pen is empty. Bits of blood. He keeps going out of our sight. He peeks into the lee of the house. Storage. He continues around and sees the stables. A horse corpse. A door heading inside. He peeks the other way. More horse corpses. Approaching the front door he see’s it’s closed. He peeks around the corner of the house and motions us up. We clomp up to Cesar.
The doors are all closed? Possibly survivors. Cesar knocks. Camlo and Solomon hear a door at the back of the house. They run to the back and the rest of us follow. We see nothing. We continue to the west side and find the door now open. Clud rolls a total -1 on his stealth.
Camlo sneaks past for a long angle view inside and sees a broken table and maybe a corpse? Cesar get closer and the room is in total disarray. One corpse is very old and uneaten with a sihedron rune on his chest. The other is mostly eaten. Cesar activates darkvision. He sees a door leading in more. Some kind of table. Is there a head on it?
Cluddox: Are we done sneaking? Cesar: Did you ever start? Paul: ½ PEP
Cluddox heads in ready for a fight. He finds a note stuck to the old corpse. The name on the note is “Cluddox”. He reads it.
“You and you alone have brought this harvest. They all died because of you.
Clud doesn’t search the body, but he does check under the beds. We continue to the next room. Cluddox looks in. Four ghouls and a taller, longer clawed, glowing eyed one dressed as a butler.
Cesar: Ready to hit a ghoul that approaches the door.
The butler whispers something.
Camlo: Double move around the outside to the front door.
Solomon: Move near door. Draw wand.
Clud: Moves up and G2’ ready action goes off. Bite 1hit 6dmg Clud’s swing 1hit 21dmg pep save is ok

After a few minutes, we un-paralyze. The rest of the house is as much disarray. Camlo and Cesar rush for a ladder from the barn. Camlo claims to the roof and we pull the ladder in the house. As Camlo looks out into the corn and notes that many of the scarecrows are “missing”. We inspectigate the glowy eyed one. Take 20. His clothes were probably fine or better, at one time. “Decent-rich-with-servant fine.” No value. We bar the doors.
Search the non ghoul. At least 3 weeks dead. Maybe even 8. This would predate the other murders. In one of the pockets is a small copper key.
We ransack the house. It takes about 3.5 hours. We reassemble the bodies as nicely as we can. A loose floorboard in the bedroom holds a stout wooden coffer. Cesar opens it with the key we found. Inside is small leather pouches containing about 3,400sp. We leave it in there for now.
Camlo doesn’t note any movement.
We decide to flee. Cluddox pulls the cart to the boy and we cut him down. We get to the horses and find an agitated Yoshi with cuts and two ghoul bodies mashed into the dirt. Camlo’s horse is missing as well.
It doesn’t take long for our conscience to kick in. We can’t leave any behind and so we head to the lone one in the south west. Chano follows but stays back with the horses. It’s a normal scarecrow.
We head all the way around and approach the last group from the north. Same strategy. Normal scarecrow. And Normal. And Normal. The last one? A person. She’s ranting about ghouls in the barn. We just take her down and flee ASAP. We’re pretty sure we got them all. Head back to Sandpoint and rush to the church.
We ask the gate guard to summon the Sheriff to the church. Zantus sees the wounded to beds. We exposition at the Sheriff. Show him the note. He agrees it seems older. He asks us to help clean up the farms as the guards are, understandably, reluctant. We’ll need more horses and a bigger wagon. It’ll be the mayor’s call if we bring the bodies back into town or start a new graveyard. Solomon tithes 10pp which should cover 3 of the castings. We give the coffer to Father Zantus.
First cure to the boy.
Second to the woman.
Third to Solomon so he can tend to us.
The woman wishes to thank us. Cesar and Camlo hear the tale similar to farmer Gump. She was in the barn with the infection when she heard her husband scream. Cesar gets the sense that she remembers one of the figures who went in was wearing a fancy blue coat of finery. Cesar gets her to recall enough about the coat that he recognizes Cluddox’s “friend”, Aldern Foxglove!
