Well, I'm not sure what's going to happen to Cesar, but at least his Charisma score is still at maximum...
As the undead-ish crows noiselessly take flight, Cluddox and Cesar run back into the house, and we just slam the door on them. We continue checking out the house’s main floor. As expected, we were beset upon the swarm of mice when we checked the bathroom. We deal with the mice and move on. In the ballroom, the piano is actually still in decent shape. Cesar plinks on the piano, and it starts to play a tune. An old Varisian tune. Cesar is taken with the music, and starts dancing to it. But, he is clearly strained by it, so we have to go in and smash the piano to get the music to stop and get Cesar to stop dancing. There is a strange shriek as the piano stops, as if it was in anger that the song ended before it was supposed to.
We go back up to the third floor to check out the remaining rooms. We find one room with two stained glass windows. One is of a noble with a crown of ivory, the other is a woman in a purple robe and a jagged metal staff. Solomon slightly recognizes the woman as a famous wizard, but doesn’t know anything else about her. I don’t recognize either of them. We check the final room, and it is stuffed with shelves of books and objects. It also is free of the mold and mildew in the rest of the house.
We head back to the master bedroom and look around in more detail. When we turn the painting around, it is a picture of the living woman that was killed, with a plaque reading Iesha Foxglove. Cesar becomes dizzy when looking at the painting, and feels the urge to kill the nearest female (which would be the revenant). We go back to the revenant’s room, and move her huge mirror back down to the hallway in the basement.
We set up the mirror in the hallway, and Cesar goes to attack her, and then turns invisible. She is distracted by the mirror and starts crying. Cesar moves up to pick the lock on the door and succeeds. He opens the door into a chamber that looks like it was once an arcane workshop. There are three iron bird cages with dead rats. Two stained glass windows show a thin man with gaunt features drinking a green fluid, and the same man but in an advanced state of decay, celebrating in victory. The man is Voral Foxglove taking the final solution to turn himself into a lich. The second window shows him bonding with his phylactery. Cluddox takes a look at some of the books and freezes and doubles over in rage. I take a closer look at the paintings. The books on the shelves are all filled with Necromancy information, it is more apparent was definitely interested in becoming a lich. The cages are new(ish), made and put here within the last year. They each have a dead rat in them. The cages say “Pug’s Cages, Magnamar” on them.
Cluddox opens the next door. Down a sloping hallway, there is a room with several broken pick-axes lying around, with a gaping hole in the floor. A spiral staircase goes down. The stone of the stairs is much older than the stone of the rest of the house. Before heading down, Cesar moves the mirror out of the Revenant’s face, setting her off again. We follow her down the stairs.
It goes down about 60 feet into a rough-hewn cavern. The stench of rot is getting stronger with each step. We follow her down a passage, which opens into a chasm with a creaky rope bridge. There are crashing waves down below in the chasm. She goes across, but the whole thing gives way when she is 30 feet across. We throw a rope and grappling hook across to the posts still embedded on the other side that we are able to get ourselves across.
We reach another cavern with a body (mostly eaten), and a spiral staircase going down. We check the body, and go down. Cesar finds a crudely constructed blade trap, about 30 feet down the stairs. He disables it and we continue down. We reach the bottom of the stairs, in a limestone cavern. Camlo finds some disturbed fungi on the ground, mostly between the northern and southern passages. We go to the north. There is an alcove here, with particularly thick mold. As Cesar steps into the alcove, yellow poisonous spores wash out over him and Cluddox. Then, some ghouls step out of the shadows and attack us. We deal with the ghouls and move on. We find an open cavern that has a spiral ramp leading down to frothing, sloshing water. We come across an area stained with blood, and more ghouls come out of the shadows. We deal with them, and heal up Cesar and Cluddox and Camlo. We search through the area, we find a smashed in skull with a stone in it. The stone is a wing from a statuette, like the one from the library upstairs. We find a large stone door in the north, which leads to a room with someone talking, dark green mold, and dripping fungi. There is a huge black, human-shaped fungi on the back wall. Also, slumped in a chair is a horribly deformed Foxglove, mumbling to himself, but very happy to see Cluddox. And by happy, I mean happy to be able to eat Cluddox’s heart while it is still warm. Cesar goes in, gets overwhelmed by the unearthly smell, and is compelled with having to eat the black fungus on the wall behind Foxglove.
