It is February 1687. We’ll start out in Martinique, the center of French activity. It’s in the far eastern side of the Caribbean, part of the West Indies.
Mock combat – we are enjoying some shore leave trying to get drunk in peace when a table of troublemakers finally causes too much ruckus in the bar.
Dan’s character, Artemis– ship’s surgeon taken in by another country because he was fighting in a continental European war--an Englishman wanted by his own country.
Scott’s character, Jean – French merchant who came to the New World to seek his fortune, got drunk, ended up on a ship.
Mitch’s character, Jose – a native of the Caribbean that none of the colonial powers seem to care about. He’s a well-versed ship’s hand and excellent hand-to-hand fighter.
Jason’s character, Edgar – Frenchman born in Quebec City (?), New France. Went home to France with his family, trained in fencing. He’s very proud of his French heritage and a big believer in his own abilities.
Are these just regular assholes? Jean thinks they look like sailors, not humble townsfolk.
Eventually Jean walks over to them and tells them that while the harpsichord player might not be any good, he’d still rather hear that then these clowns lying about their latest exploits.
We deal cards for initiative, Ace first and 2 last. You can hold; if you un-hold on someone’s turn, compare Agility scores.
1 regular action without penalty. Each additional action attempted lowers all rolls by 2.
Jose runs up next to Jean. The loudmouths are armed with cutlasses but don’t have them drawn. Jean attempts to Intimidate the thug in front of him (B) and gets a 17 (6-6-5). The thug is Shaken (beat by 13). +2 on next action and Shaken.
Patrons and wenches see what’s going on and begin to scatter from the area.
B remains Shaken and backs away slowly. A steps up to Jean. D steps up to Artemis. A swings his fist at Jose, who parries 5 and misses. C just tags Jean (to hit 5 vs parry 5) but doesn’t exceed the toughness of 5. Edgar attempts to leap onto the table which is a strength? Agility? Check. Under movement it claims to be a Strength check. If he wants to tumble onto the table, that’s Agility. He has to run but he still makes it. Stabbing at C he gets a 5…hits! He deals a 7 point hit which is enough to provide Shaken but no damage. But now someone has busted out knives in this fistfight. He again stabs C…hits him for another Shaken, taking him out.
Barkeep: No fighting! Someone call the Watch!
Artemis shakes off the Shaken, then prepares himself for combat. Jose attacks A and makes him Shaken with his Caribbean kung fu.
Jean follows behind B and attempts to cold-cock him. He hits for 5 points, equal to toughness, which would be enough to Shake him. He goes down (non-Wild-Cards go down if they are Shaken and take a second Shaken from an attack – that turns into a wound, and one Wound is enough to drop a NWC.
A Unshakes. D is happy to acquiesce and punch Artemis. D misses. A swings at Jose and misses. D misses Artemis. Jean makes a feeble attempt to Intimidate A and does. A is Shaken.
Jose punches A, Shakes him, and drops him out.
Artemis makes a called shot to his head (-4 to hit, +4 to damage). He equals the guy’s Toughness, open-ends on the damage, and drops him in a single blow. Blood fountains from his nose as he falls to the ground.
The guards show up quickly, identify the four as pirates, and round them up to drag them away.
