We had to sneak into Baron Pettigrew's place, so we made and executed a half-assed plan. So far it seems to be working, but now we've found the Baron himself. Instead of kicking ass on the guards, now we get to kick ass on a guy in a nightgown.
January 28, 2018
Front door is to the top of the map. Some but not all of the windows are covered with curtains. Ballroom to the west; windows are open. Two fireplaces to the left side; one has smoke coming out. There is a second story. Windows on the east side, to the sitting room, are open. None of the others are open. There are some to the entry hall. There is another chimney midway through the east wing. Carriage parked to the north in a small driveway. Three obvious doors – main door to the north and two smaller doors on the back side of each wing.
We have not seen anyone outside. Pettigrew is an English baron so presumably there are some guards somewhere. Also presumably there is a kidnapped pirate.
How to sneak anyone in? Fake a delivery with someone in a barrel of wine?
Artemis – if there’s a party, it would probably be by invitation only.
Jean is pretty sure he can convince someone to accept a free barrel of wine.
Artemis is a small fellow so we just need to find a barrel to stuff him in. We find a suitable wine barrel for 15 pieces.
We also see someone leave their cart alone for a moment. We borrow it. We need to drive the cart…Edgar cannot drive, but is Agile…(d6 plus explosion)-2 wild and d4-2 for unskilled. He gets an 8.
Jean claims to be from Martinson and Sons Winery…he’s got a barrel of Chateau de Vin ’84 that’s been ordered. Persuasion (5/8)+2 = 10. That’s good.
J: Which way to the cellars? I’ll have my men bring it in.
Jean yells to Edgar and Jose to bring the barrel in.
Jean asks if there is anything else he should be looking for? The head of the household would have to answer that, but Jean says no need to impose.
As a different guy comes through the door, Edgar sees a dining room beyond the kitchen.
Once out of sight, Jose hops off so he can stake out the place.
Artemis can hear what’s going on in the kitchen. He’ll have to wait until the noise dies down. Jose is in the sucky, hot jungle. Jean and Edgar get something to eat and drink in the comfort of a seaside tavern.
As night approaches, the two Frenchmen join Jose in the jungle. We smell him before we see him.
Artemis starts thinking about getting out of the barrel, but counts to 200 and hears more voices. Eventually the voices go out…the lights go out, and we see the smoke die off. Artemis doesn’t do well on his listen and starts his 200 count. He still hears nothing. There are lights on the second story and over on the other wing (in the area we aren’t sure what it is).
Virginia is with us…she is not armed. Jean mentions that she may need to grab a frying pan.
Artemis pops the lid to a dark, silent kitchen. He sneaks to the dining room door to listen…6. He hears nothing, and no light underneath it. He slips into the dining room and listens at the Ballroom door…he hears nothing. Any light? No. He cracks it open to find a big, empty, dark ballroom. There is a door to the hallway…Listen 7. He hears low voices beyond, and retreats to the kitchen.
He lights two candles and unlocks the door. We see two candles appear…we notice no one, and sneak into the kitchen.
Artemis tells us that it’s clear up to the front hall. No obvious door to a cellar. No hidden door either.
Dinner order from Sammy’s
Jason: spaghetti and meatballs plate $10 pd
Mitch: Penne and sausage dinner $13 pd
Scott: Penne and sausage dinner $13
Dan: chicken fettucine Alfredo plate $12
Aaron: Chef’s salad with turkey, no ham, lo cal french $11 pd
Virginia arms herself. We move to the Dining room and check it out…notice 15. No secret doors. We unlatch the windows.
Into the ballroom…we sneak into the room. 4, 3, 6, 2. Jose and Edgar will station themselves by the door ready to get the jump on anyone. Edgar looks through the keyhole…he sees no one, but there are still voices.
Could we climb up through a second story window? Hard to get up there.
It’s possible that the chimneys for the two fireplaces in here poke out on the 2nd floor. Edgar climbs the cold chimney from the ballroom…he starts to try but can’t even find holds. Neither can Jose.
Voices in the hallway don’t seem to be moving. The northern end of the study wing is dark…so we may be hearing voices from the southern end of the study.
Jean attempts to quietly open the door and go through.
B – to Jean: Who’s over there?
Jean: I was just coming back from getting a sandwich!
B: Then why are you skulking here?
Jean: The name’s Jean. I had met the Baron in town the other day and we had a delightful game, so he invited me to come by. No need to be alarmed. Dinner was lovely but I was still a bit hungry. But, I’ll be on my way upstairs unless His Excellency would be up for a bit more sport this evening…
B: Come over here! What was your name?
They’re armed with muskets and longswords.
Jean: Jean Maure.
B: And you’re a guest of the Baron?
J: Of course? Why else would I be here?
B: Put your weapons down. The Baron doesn’t have any guests here at the moment.
J: On the contrary! I heard he was entertaining an Englishman who knew something about a Spanish payroll…
B, to C: Go sound the alarm!
Jean moves towards C and attempts to Intimidate him into not doing anything…”Don’t do anything too hasty; you don’t want to upset the Baron unnecessarily, do you?”
We rule that since this isn’t *just* a combat situation…C will be unsure what to do. What if B’s wrong and Jean’s not?
Artemis holds…Edgar is Clueless…he wonders if Jean actually knows the Baron. Jose holds. On 5, A moves up the stairs and B goes towards the other door.
Artemis breaks out of the room towards B.
Artemis: The bluff’s not working. Get ‘em!
Edgar and Jose break out as well. Edgar misses. Jose goes to beat A and gets a 29…that’s a Raise and an extra d6 damage. 12 damage is enough to drop A (one wound and he is Out of the Fight).
Jean attempts to clobber C but misses. C will still have to unshaken…use a Bennie…barely hit, but do 13 points which is enough for a Raise meaning a Wound…so C is out. Edgar runs up the stairs 13 squares. You *can* open end on a run check. Jose runs after B but can’t get to him. Edgar misses B.
B goes into the study and cries out, “Intruders!”
Wait, Dan forgot about using Bennies. He hits for extra damage and gets a raise, knocking out C.
We quickly move the unconscious guards into the entryway…no, the Ballroom.
We go upstairs…and hear nothing upstairs. Jose hears nothing from the door to the Study. Artemis also listens at that door and hears nothing. We (unskillfully) open the upstairs door to the west most quietly and find someone.
F: What are you doing here?
Jean tries to portray himself as a hired torturer. It doesn’t work so he has to beat this guy too. At least he gets to torment *some* Englishman.
Jean misses, failing to take advantage of a Trick (do that next time…) Jose tries to wallspring, uses a Bennie, and then attacks. He hits with a Raise for 9 which is just enough to knock this guy out.
We hear nothing and check the four doors in this hallway. No one in any of the three bedrooms or the storeroom. There *was* a fireplace opening in here. One other bedroom has an opening to the fireplace for the kitchen, which is cool. We do tie up the guard in a bedsheet. In the Storeroom, there is some kind of handle to turn and a bell. Looks like it’s connected with other bells, or something. You could set off the alarms from here. Jean manages to disable *this* bell.
We’ll go across the way to check and listen. No rope in here.
We go to the 2nd floor East door and listen – we don’t hear anything, but we didn’t hear the other guy, either. Jean un-stealthily opens the door to reveal another guard. Artemis goes first…and Shakes the guard. Jose fakes someone coming through the door and then attacks the Shaken guard…taking him out.
Edgar drags the guard to the storeroom while Jean listens at the doors (13). Nothing south, nothing north, “What in bloody hell is going on out there?” from the east.
Jean, in his best English accent: There’s a man here claims to know you. Would you care to come and meet him?
A man in a nightgown and carrying a sword opens up, saying, “No, you bloody fool!” Looks like the Baron…
It’s 9 pm. 2 XP, roll for bennies…if we’re at 5 or 6 XP we can do something now.
Jean was created slightly mistakenly…so the Advance goes to raise Persuasion up to d10 like I originally had it.
