We kept moving on...found and dispatched Lady Welcraft, then took out a dwarf who was also in the thrall. Ended two beastmen and only lost one more dwarf.
However, there are dwarves here who worship Thanatos and there's about to be a religious struggle. Soon, we will be guided to the sub-level 3 where we believe the Egg awaits us, and someone will meet their ultimate doom.
March 26, 2017
No magic remains on the altar and surrounding area. The runes in the aisleway are gone. No magic on the altar.
While we chat, everyone gets a listen check. Best is a 22…16 and better we hear muttering outside…18 and higher hear it’s in dwarvish. Zantlin think’s its spellcasting – Wall of Stone.
We leave the altar and head upstairs to find ourselves stoned in. Granny uses Fly on herself to get up there faster. Yorn gets up first and hears metal-shod feet wandering away. He switches swords and wrecks the wall.
Zantlin, meanwhile, Consecrates the altar. The area no longer feels Evil.
Yorn begins to smash the wall. After four rounds of stone chips flying, the wall is removed. We proceed to the south. We vaguely hear faint whistling. The door to the south is similar-looking and marked 1C; to our left is a broken ceiling and faint sunlight. No humanoid footprints in the dirt, but there are creature footprints. It is not muddy or wet. Looking up we see the ceiling is crumbling but near the surface (within 20’ – there must be a ravine). It would not take much to collapse this hallway.
We go back to Door 1c…Kev opens it. Through the door we hear voices beyond speaking in dwarven.
One of the voices says, “You’re going to get us all killed. We should leave! Where’s that other keg of ale?”
Voices: That was funny when Valgras walled those people in. No one goes down there anymore.
The voices get quiet.
Z: I don’t think they’re friendly or they’d be talking back. If you heard people inside a temple you knew was evil, would you wall them in?
We follow Zantlin around the corner. Some of us hear them say, “Back door – ge the arms!”
Kev: You don’t need to get the arms, and you’re really loud! We want to talk…we’re not here to kick your asses unless you attack. Then we’ll kick your asses.
Voices: Vongres will take care of you! (laughing, door clicks).
K: Now we’re going to kick your ass. It’s only fair to warn you.
Z: Death to Coot! Let’s go!
We start checking doors…to the north is a big room with many tables and chairs. One table still has food…we enter.
Kev: Any invisible dwarves in here?
Kev opens a door to the west…there are a pair of female? Dwarves in there cooking.
K: Hello! Where did your more violent brethren go?
Eyes are normal color.
K: No, I totally believe!
Yorn watches dwarf 4 call a curve ball to #2…or something. 2 goes to the other door.
Z: Who are you and what are you doing here?
4: I am the head chef, but I’m not sure I should discuss this with the likes of you.
Z: Then who should I talk to? Take me to your leader.
4: I’m just a cook…I’ll take you to the chief.
2 wanders out…Granny tells her to stop…she continues to move, then casts Magic Missile for 7. She falls.
G: Bandage her. The other one can follow her instructions.
Granny patches up 2. Yorn gives her a bunch of static about this.
Y: The next time I don’t listen to you, are you going to cast spells on me too?
G: I’m not debating this. We’re in an evil temple. Diplomacy is done; we’re now using Intimidating.
4 looks over to 2 on the floor. “What the hell’s going on here?”
Y: Uh, she slipped and she hit her head. She’s fine.
Granny wants us to tie up 4.
G: You seem pretty unsurprised by five armed humans in your house. Start answering questions if you want to live through the day.
Z: Do you fight for or against the Egg of Coot?
4: I’m not answering any questions. I’m just a cook. I talk, the chief kills me.
Z: Does your clan fight for against the Egg of Coot?
4: Ask the chief.
Y: I think she might just be too dumb to help us.
G: Is that your professional opinion?
Y: Who pissed in your wizard hat today?
K: Enough! We don’t have to loot anything.
Z: We always do…
K: Maybe not this time!
We wrap around the mess hall and find more doors. One big and one small. We don’t go through these doors but instead head south where the dwarf was going to lead us in the first place. Through the doors (2D) are stairs up and another door. Stairs look good. Kev tromps up.
Doors at the top of the stairs are marked Bed Chambers, Maids’ Chambers, and Office. We head for office…it’s locked.
Kev knocks and we hear a female voice.
K: Uh, there’s some trouble in the kitchen.
V: Just a minute!
Some of us recognize the voice…it sounds like the Lady Walcrest.
She opens the door as Kev puts his sword away and Yorn grabs his.
LW: What’s the trouble – oh!
Init as Kev tries to grab her.
Robin readies…if she tries to cast, he shoots her.
Lady Walcrest is surprised. Granny uses Dimension Shuffle…all of us shimmer with blue energy as she rearranges us on the battlefield. Wait, that won’t work. Haste.
Zantlin casts Radiant Assault behind her. 20’ radius burst…rainbow beams that fill the area. D6 per level; dazed for rounds. If you save, ½ damage and only dazzled. Will save 25…full is 59. She appears to save.
Yorn conks her on the head for 26 and 28, plus 9 and 9 lethal.
Y: We’ve got some questions for you. Submit to us!
Kev, in Dwarvish: We have some questions for you. Submit to us!
Kev attempts to grapple her…and does.
Then she tries to break the grapple and does. Granny figures she’s got some kind of unnatural strength. Then she backs up and puts up her hands to talk
LW: We can talk!
Kev: Not until you’re tied up.
LW: It’s good to see you’ve finally come to visit.
Granny can still see her. K Arcane 35 – her clothing is bejeweled. One of those must be a girdle of giant strength. Granny moves up and touches Kev with Greater Heroism. +4 morale bonus on all his rolls.
Zantlin uses Moonbolt – Fort 22 for half…5 points of strength damage.
Yorn steps in and jogs her one more time, critting for 52 nonlethal and 9 lethal. She drops.
Kev steps in and scoops her up…we hear a latch opening on the east side of the room opposite the fireplace. Kev instead decides to pin her. He looks back to Yorn and looks at the wall; Yorn nods.
Kev: Everyone get in here!
The secret door opens up to reveal King Uther.
He quickly shuts the door.
K: Yorn! It’s the fake king – kick his ass but don’t kill him! We’re getting to the bottom of all of this.
Robin moves up. Granny moves in and looks around. Yorn shouts about the door…Granny Knocks the door open. “King Uther” is still there.
Kev: Get him!
Zantlin moves in and uses Sound Lance…d8 sonic per level.
Yorn: You’ll kill him!
Z: Sorry. I’ll do better.
Kev: I’ll make you resurrect him so I can torture him to death.
Half is 26.
Yorn attempts to Overrun the King, who does not stop him. Yorn attempts to Jogging Flurry on the king and misses once (revealing that he’s got magical gems) and hits once. The King drops.
Yorn: I stopped him.
We immediately strip them of their cloaks…she appears to be naked, so we cover her in the name of modesty. No markings on her. We pull her rings off as well. She does have the crazy blue eyes.
Same for the king. Pulling off his robe, he turns into an orcish-looking thing. We strip him down and tie him up too.
Any other auras in this room? Yes! Several from the bookshelves (which we’ll check later).
We shut the doors and start the interrogation.
Kev: Zantlin, can you make her conscious again?
Taking her stuff off didn’t kill her. Zantlin heals her up until she’s conscious.
Yorn starts to threaten her but Kev stifles him. He looks at Granny and decides not to waste his breath.
Yorn stands at the ready with his sword.
K: In there? I’m going to ungag you, but just so you understand the guy behind you will put that sword through your head if you try to cast.
Sense Motive: Yorn and Granny don’t figure she care if she dies.
Yorn whispers, “You may not care if you die, but we can make it hurt for a really long time.”
We jam a Protection from Evil ring onto her finger. Her eyes clear up some.
There is now a spark of fight behind her eyes.
She looks at Kev and says, “Get me out of here.”
LW: I don’t want to die answering your questions.
K: You think the thing will kill you?
She can’t go to her brother because the thing will kill her, or she’ll harm the king.
LW: Get to the thing and kill it! If it can’t take you, you can defeat it.
Y: Where is it?
LW: It’s on level SL3. L2 where we are at…2, 3, then S1, S2, S3.
K: How innocent is this one? Does he have blue eyes?
LW: Kill him. Find the dwarf chief. He is not a good person, but he fights the egg. We have been trying to stop him.
Then we see a change in her eyes…they roll up into her head, and then she collapses.
Spellcraft 51 – there must be something inside her, perhaps in her head, that is used to cast or control her.
Yorn takes his ring back. We look closely and under her hair we find something was attached. Looks similar to what the brain eating thing that was attacking Yorn might have been able to do.
We decide to pull this out surgically.
Z: Glove me!
Kev backhands Zantlin. “Why would you need that?”
Zantlin carefully extracts the gem and Yorn says it’s just like what the head munching monster would have done. Yorn explains to Granny how he was attacked and that his might be how people get infected.
Can you use Kevonium to draw the rest of the Kevonium out?
G: Let Zantlin try. He’s got the kevonium and the skill.
Granny will try to use the Kevonium to extract the rest of it. Zantlin gives it to her…but we decide that may be dangerous this close to the Egg.
Zantlin carefully attempts to do surgery on this orc…Heal 35. Zantlin pulls out the nugget of Kevonium; this one is much smaller…about a half-inch apart. We keep the kevonium balls separate, use Gentle Repose on LW then Shrink her. Kev stuffs her in his pack.
We loot the room (the gear the two were using)…take 20 search is in the 30’s.
Bookcases – lots of dwarven architecture books but also Book of Infinite Spells. K arcane 33 – book bestows upon any character of any class the ability to use spells. However any characters unable to use spells gains 1 negative level while possessing the book. 25 pages…
What’s on the first page? Arcane, 8th cast at 15th, Telekinetic sphere. Granny takes it.
10 scrolls of continual flame, arcane
10 scrolls of continual flame, divine.
We stuff the books in the hole. Our guest is still alive.
Zantlin uses K architecture – some of these date back 500 years ago.
Robes *366 (lady walcrest) and *367 (fake king).
Back from lunch and the dead princess is in Kev’s backpack.
Let’s check the secret passage. It leads to a bedroom with a bed, dresser, and worn rug.
We search the room. We find a bunch of gems that would be used for magic (Blackmoor gems)…8 jade @ 50 gp ea, 2 white pearls @ 60 gp each, 2 star rose quartz @ 50 ea, and hidden beneath one of the mattresses is a strange ring *368. It looks very similar to one we’ve grabbed before, like *363.
We aren’t going to look for the dwarves, but we’ll talk if we need to. Listen…we all hear in dwarven, “I’m gonna die! Oh yeah!” Someone through one of the doors to the north is singing and/or moaning. Inside there is a drunken dwarf lying on a flour sack.
K: On your feet, soldier!
He stands up with a quizzical look.
Drunk: Soldier? I peel potatoes.
K: Which way to the stairs down? To SL3?
Drunk: It’s like, over there. Go through door…(gives us unintelligible directions).
K: I have an idea – you should show us.
We close this dwarf back in his pantry and move on. We find a room with three doors, one labeled SL1. We go that way and descend a set of stairs 50-60’. We go down. The hallway turns and has a number of doors, then start exploring. There was something chiseled off the top of the first door.
Yorn opens the door to find a dwarf kneeling in front of a small alcove in the wall. Three warriors turn to look at us.
Kev: We come in peace.
Warriors: What business do you have with the leader?
K: We come to defeat the Egg of Coot. Our enemies are your enemies.
W: That is our pleasure as well.
K: Point us towards the Egg and we will defeat it.
W: Many have tried; none return.
The man kneeling stands up to reveal his 5’ height. His eyes are blue-tinged as we look at him.
Blue-eyed dwarf: Welcome!
Guards do not have blue eyes.
K: Anyone we’ve seen under the control of Coot have piercing blue eyes. Do dwarves normally have blue eyes?
He starts walking towards us, then invites us in.
The guards hold him back.
Guards: This is Lord Karnundrum. (sp)
Z: There will be a scar on the base of his neck if he’s a thrall. Check him while we wait.
Guards: We’ll not do such to our leader.
Granny may actually know Lord Karnundrum. He’s the lord of all mines in Blackmoor.
Z: What do you think of Lady Walcrest?
LK: She is my liege.
Z: May I check your neck?
LK: No. I have no reason to show you. I have many scars, so you won’t be able to tell anyway. Do you mean this one? (an old knife wound).
LK: Why were you not brought before Lady Walcrest? She would have sent me a message…
Z: Oh, we saw her already…
We see the statue in the corner – it’s to Thanatos.
Z: Well, we’re sorry to bother you. We’ll go to destroy the Egg now.
LK: No need…my people are coming now.
Kev: Too late. Draw and attack.
LK: We’re just talking…
K: No, I’m tired of this.
Dwarves come up behind us…then we hear a voice in dwarven call, “Company, halt!” We don’t see blue eyes on the first dwarf coming around the corner.
The lord moves up to Kev, and suddenly a voice says, in Dwarven, “I’ve been looking forward to this.”
The lord hacks into Kev with this dwarven war axe and misses.
Granny casts Wall of Iron to the left of the party. As it forms, she hears a voice say, “You fool!”
Then she moves to the right.
Dwarf 2 in the room’s eyes turn blue and he comes up to Yorn. He hits for 12. Kev hacks into the lord…or he activates his ring of Blink.
Zantlin casts Spiritual weapon and puts it between the lord and 3. It deals 11 points of damage.
We can hear hammering on the iron wall. Yorn hits Kalnundrum for 26+10.
Yorn: Is that what it sounds like when I break a wall? That is really irritating.
Robin watches up the stairs.
Yorn, Kev, and Zantlin see dwarf 3 come up behind Kalnundrum. He drives his axe into the back of Kalnundrum.
Yorn: I give him flank, I guess.
From the other side, we hear “Get this damned wall out of here! We can’t help him like this!”
Kalnundrum attacks Kev and eventually hits once for 19+11.
Granny casts Maze on 2.
Kev returns the favor to Kalnundrum. He hits for 12, 14, and a couple more times.
Zantlin’s hammer starts attacking, then Zantlin runs into the room. Zantlin misses Kalnundrum.
Robin spots three of the brain eaters run into the room up above the stairs.
Robin tells us this.
Y: Yeah, well they’re not down here yet.
More banging on the wall.
Yorn hits for 67, 36, 36…and he begins to fall to the floor…Granny notices one of the crystals in his vest starts to glow. It looks like it’s going to blow up!
Yorn’s got one more attack…Granny uses Celerity to give herself a standard action. She casts Otiluke’s resilient sphere around Kalnundrum.
Yorn: Whoa, what just happened?
Yorn then beats 1 and steps back.
Robin readies to fire at the brain muncher if it starts t approach.
Dwarf 3 flees and ducks, shouting, “Everybody down!”
Kalnundrum explodes inside the Otiluke’s sphere. Whatever he was has now evaporated.
Scott: But his magic items get saves!
Granny is dazed on her turn. Kev asks where the next enemies are and joins Robin.
K: You been shooting at them?
Robin: Yeah! (fail bluff)
K: Why not?
Spiritual hammer on 1, and then Zantlin pounds him down.
Brainmuncher 3 DD’s down in front of Robin. Robin shoots it and steps to the left.
More banging on the iron wall.
Another brainmuncher DD’s in next to Zantlin.
Y: Another one in here. Me and Zantlin got this one!
Yorn runs in and pounds on BM-2 with slashing flurry.
More banging on the wall.
BM-1 DD’s in behind Robin and Granny.
Dwarf 3 squeals, “Get that thing away from me!” He’s terrified and useless.
Granny casts Maze on 1. Spellcraft 47 – these monsters have gems implanted in their foreheads. That may be where they’re getting spell-like abilities. 1 disappears.
Kev gets with the chopping on 3. Hit for 13 and misses.
Zantlin’s hammer misses the monster. Zantlin steps up into flank and starts hammering – but misses twice.
3 attempts to grab Kev and hits him…then grapple. Kev shakes him off.
Robin debates moving, but Granny yells at him to stand still. Robin puts one into 3 for 17 and another one for 17.
Granny: They’ve got arcane ability use the arrow of slaying!
Yorn: These guys are wussies; it’s not worth using the arrow.
Suddenly a big hole opens up in the iron wall and a voice shouts, “We’re here to help!”
Voice: You, dammit!
Beastman 2 tries to grab Zantlin, then starts the grapple. Yorn attacks and hits once. Turns out that Zantlin’s not grappled because the power of Arianna gives him freedom to move.
The other dwarves run in and attempt to attack the beastman 2. The Beastman pulls in dwarf 4, but the other dwarves surround it.
V, another dwarf, has on a steel helmet with gold filigree on it. This is mostly a dress-helmet.
V: Ok men, let’s get these things out of here.
Some of the dwarves ran past Granny.
Granny uses Bigby’s grasping hand on 3. The hand grapples the Beastman and does.
Kev starts kicking ass on 3 for 20, 13, 18, miss.
Zantlin’s hammer hits 2 for 5. He hits for 15 and miss.
3 howls and disappears…uses DD, but not sure where he went.
Robin: Did you just pop it?
Granny: No. It used dimension door and It might come back.
Robin shoots the one in the room and misses. More dwarves surround Beastman 2. B2 pins the dwarf and the protuberance attacks the back of the dwarf’s head…might be too late. Yorn hacks the enemy and it hits three times…it disappears with the dwarf still in tow.
Zantlin thinks it…not sure. Probably something to do with the gems.
Yorn: Are there are any more coming?
Granny: One could come back any time. And an enthralled dwarf may come back next to the orb.
We reposition ourselves and prepare to fight the two who return from Maze…and one other one may wander back.
Vongruss greets us…they have been watching us but unable to move until now.
K: Your assistance is welcome. We introduce ourselves.
Granny dismisses the hamster ball, dumping the remains of Kalnundrum on the ground.
Robin: And I thought they smelled bad on the *outside*.
Dwarf 2 comes back…Granny hits for 16. 5 bonks 1 for 9. Yorn knocks him out and says, “His crime is being a weak-willed fool. He may not deserve death.
7 stays readied. 8 moves down …we all ready. Beastman 1 comes back into a cloud of whirling blades and hammers…and a dismissal spell, and a magic missile.
Zantlin manages to banish it.
None of these extra-dimensional beastmen remain. Unfortunately one of them took a dwarf with.
V goes to slice 2’s throat, and Yorn stops him.
V: You don’t kill ‘em, they come back to harm you.
Y: We can un-do this.
Zantlin and Yorn will do surgery.
Kev, to Vongruss: We are ambassadors from a faraway kingdom. The king of Blackmoor – the right one, the one who isn’t an orc – that guy’s tied up upstairs.
Granny: We should have removed the influence of the egg.
V: Don’t count on the eyes!
K: Yes, we found that. We do know how to find out if you have a skilled healer. Zantlin may be able to show your healers.
Z: We will do this.
K: You show them how to find out.
We explain that he beastmen, the brain-eaters, are doing the infecting.
Beastmen have only been here for a few years but lots of cultists for years. But we don’t know; maybe the beastmen were hidden.
V: We have been fighting to keep them out of the mines, but losing.
K: With the Lady and fake king gone, and this man’s demise, it should be easier.
V: He was one of our finest citizens, once. I would have liked to save him. He had us in lower levels o the mine that were very unsafe.
K: IF you take us where the infection was worst, we will help you with it.
V: Maybe you are, but we are not equipped to go into those areas. My captain went in with 20 soldiers, but never returned. In the past, when people got too close to that area, they would have their minds wiped.
K: We have a master mage here in Lady Gertrude. She’s older than she looks.
V: She’s human. Does she always glare like that?
G: We found a girl stunted and chained down labeled “servant’s quarters”. How did she get there? How do you not know about that what’s only a short distance away, yet you were watching us?
V: This is my first time up here in a month. I must hide, as my face is known. Ifthey see me (points to Kolnundrum), they’ll kill me. He’s had absolute control for a half year. She’s been in there longer than that.
Y: Why would anyone keep her there so long?
V: To pay homage to Thanatos.
Y: Speaking of that, this idol here needs to be wrecked.
V: It’s just an idol.
Sense motives…best is 27. Zantlin thinks Vongruss is being suitably up-front and honest.
Strangers in this complex mean trouble.
Apparently they have a source that told them we were here to fight the Egg. He won’t tell us who, because if we are taken, the Egg will learn it.
G: Wehave reason to believe that we need to fight the Egg, and must go to SL3.
V: That is the blackness…no one returns.
G: Then we must go there. Will anyone else up here bother us, now that Kalnundrum is dealt with?
V: No idea.
G: Who is the Egg most likely to use next?
V: The only one I’ve heard rumors about is a man named Sildanus.
Us: Makes sense.
G: How do we get to sublevel 3?
V: It is complex, but I can send someone to guide you.
He turns to his men and asks for a volunteer. 3 blanches; the others stare blankly. 6 says he’ll do it.
K, to 6 in Dwarven: Just to the entrance.
K: Is there a place where we can rest?
V: Where we hide out, yes. It will take nearly a hour, but we are well-guarded.
Zantlin and Nurse Yorn remove the Kevonium while everyone else loots and guards.
Vongruss asks for Kalnundrum’s axe, and we hand it over.
We find gem *369, breastplate *370.
Vongruss looks pretty smug collecting that axe (human bane, of course).
Our guard is awake after surgery, and V asks some questions. The guard’s eyes are no longer blue. They chat normally…
K: I can’t guarantee he’s normal, but he looks ok.
Vongruss will take him with, but he needs to be locked outside the stronghold. Does he remember anything while serving Kalnundrum? Diplomacy – like where those beastmen usually hang out. No, not really…
2: Usually they hang out at their rituals; that’s when I got turned. Chamber with a fire, ritual, etc.
Y: Preach on, brother.
2: They had to hold me down and it was awful. Some went willingly.
10-15 dwarves per day joined their side.
Yorn goes to smash the idol, but Vongruss stops him saying it doesn’t need to be destroyed.
Vongruss positions himself between Yorn and the idol and says that’s not necessary. Zantlin calls the idol to his hand.
Granny: What the hell are you doing?
Next week we will discuss the wonders of Arianna.
Good progress tonight.
