Just when we thought we tied up all our loose ends, the King decides we needed a few more. At least he only asked for our help this time.
How do we train this damn dragon? What did we teach her?
Don’t eat the kingdom…
Don’t crap on Granny’s tower…
Don’t follow Kev everywhere…
Don't terrify the populace…
The tomb of understanding is for… Zantlan?
Re-Discussing our monies.
Granny is teleported to the library by Yorn and she begins looking up info on Blackmoor…
She takes 10 on arcana and gets… a lot. More skills get her high numbers. She finds JACK SHIT!
But… as she’s looking, the librarian asks if Granny is researching another kingdom. “Yes”.
The librarian suggest the king’s personal library may contain more.
A few messages and soon Gertrude is told the king would be happy to see her. Not exactly what she wanted, but… she goes.
To the king! Granny is presented to the main chambers and announced. She’s not so good at the curtsey but the king still is happy to see her.
King: What brings you?
Granny: There are researches that require your personal library and I have need to learn of places far afield.
K: Which land?
G: The translation is Blackmoor.
K: I haven’t heard of it either. But I haven't read every word in my library.. He sends an escort with her, instructing him to help.
G:Thank you, my lord. (*she notes his eyes linger for some reason…)
To the library!
Granny is looking for geographic info on the Blackmoor and it’s inhabitants. The Wokan peoples.
The guide leads her to a scroll. It’s the same language as her scrolls which began her small quest.
Helper: “This is all we have.”
She spends the rest of the day in the new library, but finds nothing more. The far south is shrouded in mystery. She memorizes the scroll.
Days later, Kev and Granny determine that dragon poop is good for fertilizer and so Kev travels his kingdom handing out the goods. The peasants aren't as grateful as Kev expected.
Zantlan takes time out to travel to his island. They don’t chase him away as we suggested they would. He wants to research these Glimmer Hold dwarves. He wants to increase his armor and weapon as well. He finds that up until the time that relations broke off, his island had active trade with Glimmer Hold in metals and gems that one city could mine but the other could not. He even finds port and trade routes from one to the other. They seemed to be friendly. At least at this juncture in history.
Zantlan submits a report of the new friendly status. He also puts in a request for Delphnia to retire. The elders offer him the position but he vehemently declines! They agree to start preparations for the old dwarf matron’s retirement.
We find our several months of dragon training passing quickly. The rest of us have little to do and so we see that Kev has taught some patience and respect to the little beastie. She’s grown almost two feet and is ready to return home. Can we teleport? Kev and Yorn go with the youngling. Everything at the lake is undisturbed so Kev harrumphs. Nothing. The youngling jumps to the ice and pounds through. Splash!
A moment later the two jump out and Kev gets Yorn to kneel.
Helrun: Welcome back.
Kev: Thank you. We return our friend.
H: She has learned?.
K: She has learned well! I think she surprised even herself.
H: Our bargain has been finished. You may leave.
The boys back away in a respectful manner. “Be well little one!”
It nuzzles Kev and growls out a “Thank you.”
Yorn shines his helmet and they quickly teleport home.
100XP to Kev for dragon training.
A few days of peace. A runner has been spotted on Kev’s lands. Zantlan is back in town by now. Kev prepares the hall. We get out the nice plates! Oh! They’re rather dusty…
Butler: You have a visitor.
Kev: Uh… Bring him in.
Messenger Elliot: Greeting from the king.
K: Good day. What can I do?
E: Hands over a scroll.
Scroll: Dearest Kev. By your king’s hand… (that’s as far as kev gets)
Kev: Summon Granny!
Scroll again: Dearest Kev. By your king’s hand It has been sometime since I’ve left my palace and I would like to travel. I request lodging at your manor house. I may inspect your properties. Word has been good. Please reply to my runner if you can be ready within the week.
Kev: Butler will get you a dinner and bath, Elliot.
He goes to his office to begin writing a response. This may take a while. Granny agrees to write out an affirmative for Kev as his (VERY temporary) scribe. The messenger is sent on his way. Kev then calls a meeting with the butler, the lady of the brothel, and Granny… He then proceeds to panic.
Kev moves out of the nicest room and fixes it up for the king’s arrival. He makes sure the kitchen is stocked and all the cows are milked. We’re not sure why.
Many of the citizens are getting excited. Kev has a meeting with the serfs about do/not do around the king. He’s suitably panicked by now. He heads to the “Hotel” and buys off the girls so they go away for the week.
On an unassuming Thursday afternoon, we hear a trumpet in the distance. The king’s retenue, surrounded by plenty of soldiers marches into town. The late summer wind blows through.
“All hail the King!” We kneel as a courier readies the carpet. Out steps the King of Illiostal!
King: Good afternoon, Kev. Thank you for having me. Are things in order?
Kev: Yes, my lord. You require a refreshment?.
Kev: We have prepared a room with refreshments for your arrival. This way, my lord.
Kev leads the King to a veranda and offers him a cold juice.
We soon shake of the formality and Kev and the king begin chatting politics about the kingdom. Eventually, though, the king brings up his ulterior motive. He wishes Mrs. Gertrude to join. Zantlan as well. Kev finally get servants to summon all of us.
King: Gertrude was at my library searching for something called Blackmoor. Shortly thereafter, an emissary came from that very place. He brought greetings and talked of opening trade between our kingdoms. But, I feel, that something dark and sinister was hiding beneath our meeting. If he is being honorable, I don’t want to risk war, but if he wasn't… well, war is expensive, you know.
Granny: What did you sense?
King: It was just a feeling. He was being truthful but not completely truthful. Not a lie but an omission. Also when he left the cleaners found this in his room.
He hands an odd scroll to Granny.
Granny: ...wild magic? ...white magic? Hmm… I haven’t heard of this.
The info is passed to Zantlan
King: I’m here to ask if you would be willing to go. Discover this Blackmoor. You have proven yourself in the past at ferreting out these kinds of secrets. Be certain, this is not an order, but a request.
Granny: I’m very interested in being a… visitor to this kingdom. Zantlan is also an excellent trade negotiator.
King: The route is south along the river. Perhaps our neighbors to the east would have better relations with them. The river flows through this kingdom. We have six months to send an emissary.
After some tomfoolery we agree to represent the kingdom. Robin is off hunting fresh pesant for the king. Pheasant. Whatever.
We consider buying a boat. Ferry. Raft. Not sure yet.
The king is continuing a tour of his kingdom and once the king has left, we head to Illiostal. First stop is the harbor.
Kev: Helo $Harbormaster. I need your help. We need a boat. 2 questions: 3: No, 2? Should I rent a boat? And does anyone here have a boat and is in financial distress?
$: The waters of the eastern kingdom can be a little tricky. Especially if you don’t have a proper crew.
The harbormaster comes back later with an older gentleman. Introductions. ...yeah.
$$: My name is Gregory. We are not the luckiest of crews. I even have trouble manning the ship. Anyone else can ship fine, but somehow I’m the one who hits the storm. Bad luck. 5gp/day. For him, his crew, and his ship.
Kev: Let’s go see this boat. C’mon Zantlan!
Us very unskilled sailors think the ship looks good.
Kev: How much you want for it?
Cue haggling and looking up old books.
Kev takes us on a tour of the boat. Granny thinks the boat isn’t worth more than 6,000gp MAX. She whispers this to Kev. Kev takes Gregory to the bank and drops 7 - 1,000gp diamonds in front of him.
Kev: How long will it take to repair the ship and hire a better crew?
G: A few days.
Kev drops another diamond for repairs. “Go fix the boat.”
Kev sends a note to the royal admiral asking for a few minutes of his time. Soon Kev is granted an audience. Introductions.
Kev: We are headed out on a long sea mission. In order to do this i have aquired a boat. I understand we have a fine naval tradition in Illiostal. I also understand that, on occasion, sailors retire, or young sailors finishing their terms. Payment will be consummate. Could you proved a list of 12 stout veterans?
Admiral: I think I can provide that.
Once assembled, Kev leads them to the ship. A few even arrive in uniform. They seem unwilling to undress. We decide it won't matter for a while. The ship is done with its repairs.
We arrive early and find everything ship shape. Coming aboard we situate ourselves to stay out of the crew's way. Soon we head out. After a few days travel, we come to the next town and stop to pick up some “diplomatic gifts”. Wine, preserved meats, etc. We head on our way. We choose to continue through the night. Over a few days we pass several small villages. Finally coming to a slightly larger village. Caamel. It’s for transporting livestock on and off the river. We disembark and do some asking about travelers to and from the south. Ask about Blackmoor. Known hazards. Etc. Kev doesn’t gain any insight. Back on the boat.
Less and less small villages. At the start of one morning the vegetation seems to be falling away. The banks are getting more sandy. The captain informs us we are about a day from the mouth of the river.
½ a day west and we see a fair sized city. We make for port. Granny and Kev head into the city and Gather Info all over the place. Finally they learn that continuing along the coast they will find Baltor. We waste little time and head to the next city.
After only a day we come upon a large port city riding the mouth of a major river. We head for dock. Time for more info stuff. Everybody on the dock seems to be elven! We’re a little nervous...
They throw us ropes. “Welcome to Salatar!” We tie up.
The rest of the crew will be staying onboard. We head down. The portmaster come up to us.
P: “Blackmoor is farther west, down the river. We don’t trade often. The terrain is quite difficult. You would have been better coming down the western coast.”
Kev: May we hire a guide.
P: You’re in luck. Several are ready to head home. They would accompany you.
Zantlan notes that in his scrying, where he thinks the city should be, he finds nothing. He sees only a shimmer in his crystal ball.
We agree to exchange a free boat ride to the elves for navigation through the swampy part of the wilderness.
As we travel the town we notice there seems to be too many animals wandering the town. Zantlan doesn’t find any large temple in town but he knows the elven pantheon isn’t famous for grandeur.
We head to a largish tavern and begin to inquire about alcohol. They’ll sell to us but we are warned that it can have… funny effects on humans.
1 cask of liquor and a case of wine. One of those sample pack dealies. Kev also manages to get a bottle of mushroom wine that granny figures will cause hallucinations for about three days!
Harbormaster: You may call me Nel.
Granny is suspicious but she detects no evil thoughts. Kev takes Nel to meet the Captain. Granny is still being observant but she sees nothing that designates a magic user. We find them rooms.
Only shortly into the next leg of our voyage, some of us notice that 3 of the elves jump overboard! One becomes an otter, one becomes a fish, one becomes a bird and flies away!
Us: Perhaps you could let us know before any more elves just leap overboard and transform?
Harbormaster: Will do.
Granny spends time talking with Nel and learning of his people.
After we get through the fens Nel takes his leave of us. He changes into a leopard and jumps to shore.
Us: Alright, then.
We should be coming into Blackmoor at the end of the large inlet. Zantlan still cant see the city in his scrying. As we get near the large body of water, strange charges shoot into the air. In the smaller sea we see ships sailing toward us. We prepare for negotiations. And hopefully not war.
They come alongside and begin parlay.
Them: We are from Blackmoor. We see you are from the northern lands. Please allow our helmsman to pilot your ship into port. Zantlan casts true seeing as we get close. He can see the city. The rest of us see an empty bay. We kind of wait, slackjawed until, all of a sudden, we see an entire city.
Granny is eyes wide. Somehow some kind of plane shift affects us. She’s wracking her brains as to the plane we’re on.
Blackmoor. A castle on the hill. The docks harbor only ships flying the same flag.
Granny asks our temporary helmsman the name of the castle. “Blackmoor. Ruled by King Uther Handavar and the council.” Her Gather Info isn’t good enough for more. She blames the helmsman’s attitude. Kev’s Gather Info gets that the shield thing is controlled by a cabal of wizards. But nothing more and so he also claims the helmsman is rude.
Blackmoor is beset by enemies to the north. Afrithi (not us) and the shield keeps their foes out.
Afrithi are a frightening race of humanoid warriors. They survive in the mountains. Dark skin, flaming red hair. Great strength.
Gather our stuff. Tell the captain to stay onboard for now. Our helmsman leads us through town up to the gates of the castle. We’re led into a small waiting room. We take a seat. 10 minutes nothing. 20 minutes nothing. We try to stay patient. About ½ hour later we are greeted by Svenson. Baron of Blackmoor.
Sven: I assume our emissary arrived in your kingdom.
Kev: Yes. We have come to return the favor!
Sven: Have you heard from our emissary?
Us: He’s not here? We don’t know...
Sven: We’ve been at war for decades. Forgive our suspicion, but we take no chances.
Granny provides the journal found in the emissary's room in Illiostal.
Sven: Our emissary was not trained in magic. But he was sent with three others. One, a magic user, was to only travel as far as Glimmer Hold.
Eventually, we are allowed to meet with the council but not the king. Zantlan feels Svenson is hesitating as to why he doesn’t want to involve the king. Probably some political BS and not us.
We head back to our ship and agree to not wander the city just yet.
