Granny has decided that she's got this stuff of creation and it's time to become a goddess, or nearly so. That's the kind of crazy talk that makes the party hunt you down.
The rest of us got together and decided not to get further entangled in the royal politics, and Granny will join us when she can. She is safe for us to be around, and she claims she can safely reside in Blackmoor without beinin town and Robin comes with. On the way they get jumped by a bunch of Egg cultists who charm Yorn...he sees through this around the time one of their big baddies chomps down on his head. After the ensuing bloodbath, we have new information.
February 19, 2017
15 x level, ½ PEP for start
The party is split by hundreds of miles.
Granny and Yorn have teleported off. Yorn is staying with Granny until the morning, at the earliest – he needs to make sure she’s safe, and he has no idea where to teleport to.
We’re under the protection of a Mage’s Private Sanctum…they’re trapped in the same room.
Granny fails a will save at merely a 33. She had previously used a Sending spell off scroll…Yorn notices Granny stop muttering…he tries to heal her but to no avail. She starts muttering in a strange language. He makes her comfortable and makes sure she can’t puke on herself.
Meanwhile, the other half of the party has just spoken to the king about his sister and the relationship with Illiostal. They’re in the king’s sister’s mansion; Sildanus also has a room there. They want Granny and they won’t hang the rest of them.
Kev: Zantlin, do you have *any* idea what happened?
Robin: She disappeared.
Kev: The Kevonium has affected her.
Z: Yes. We’ve seen that…I asked her to let me carry it, and she wouldn’t let me.
K: How dangerous do you think she is, Zantlin?
Aaron doesn’t know about the crystal ball and her twin sister.
Kev asks if Zantlin can keep them from being observed…spot check to see if anyone is spying. 26 – they don’t see anyone, or any peepholes, etc.
Kev tells Zantlin the story of Granny’s Sister…holding nothing back. Zantlin shares his helmet of comprehend languages with Robin so they can speak in Dwarven.
Granny fails to wake up a couple of times. After an hour, she wakes up. Yorn explains what happened…Granny realizes that she had a far greater cache of knowledge than before. And, she knows High Thonian.
Back to the other group – they talk about the Elven Village. What to do? Well, how much control does it have over her…maybe they can pull her back, or maybe she needs to be ended.
K: How do we test that?
Z: No idea.
K: What would you do if she was here?
Z: Talk to her to find out what’s going on. If she gets more secretive than usual, maybe it’s not Granny anymore.
K: What happens if we take it from her?
Z: It depends.
K: I don’t know anything about this so I’m counting on you. But last time we messed with someone with that substance, it was bad. I anticipate that there may be collateral damage. If we need to relieve of the substance, we need to get it someplace no one else can get hurt. And…
K: I don’t know that we can take her.
Z: I’m more concerned about her just leaving. If she can teleport on her own, we have no way to find out where she went. We know she can mask herself…I can’t find them.
K: One problem at a time. If we have to confront her, we need to make sure we don’t kill any innocents. And what about Yorn? Granny’s gonna be hard enough…Yorn will carve a hole through us.
Scott, to Paul: *finger*
Joe – ½ PEP
Z: How do you know he’s siding with her?
K: I don’t. I don’t think she’s controlling him, but we need to at least to make sure he’s neutral.
They can’t talk to Granny right now, but they *could* teleport there and try to find them. The village isn’t that big…tomorrow they could teleport.
K: If she found some of that stuff, they want it so now we’re in a bad spot. Our king also wants it…so I’m starting to think no one should get it.
Z: I think we should give it to the gods. I could commune with Arianna…
K: We need more information.
Z: Did she take it because she doesn’t want the mages here to have it? She did spend time with them, and might not trust him either.
K: Whenever we ask the mages about it, they clam up. So I’m ready to punch this guy in the throat until he talks, but that may upset ‘em. Is this stuff dangerous but impossible to get rid of?
Kev thinks giving it to the gods is fine, but if they filled the earth with it, I’m not wasting my life chasing it down.
There is a knock at the door. It’s a beautiful woman; they all stand, including Zantlin. They then bow and make Sense Motive checks…Before she speaks, they see she’s either excited or frightened and trying to hide it (not Kev).
KS: Welcome to my home. I have come to speak to you.
They greet her; Kev gives her the chair. They close the door and speak.
KS: What did you speak to my brother about? Let me introduce myself; I am Lady Chelsea.
They introduce themselves.
K: WE didn’t speak with him long, milady.
LC: There is something wrong with him that I didn’t want to ask him about…I have a trip to the city of Ramwal where I am to meet the Dwarven chancellor of mines. Could you accompany me as part of my entourage?
K: We are deeply flattered, but we are here as emissaries and diplomats – and we have misplaced a few people we are concerned about.
LC: I understand.
Robin: When is your trip?
LC: I am leaving in two days.
K: May I consider this? If we can resolve this before then we may be able to go with,.
She asks us not to tell the King because “there’s something wrong.”
K: If I am asked directly, I will not lie to him.
LC: Besides trade, what brings you to Newgate?
K: I was told by my king. I must understand the politics of this city.
LC: This is why you should come with.
LC: You would have the chance to meet the dwarven regent of mines…they mine much more than the gems used by the cabals. Some of the people here build machines of the iron mined here.
K: Interesting. Zantlin, we met some interesting creatures…
K: Yes. Have you ever dealt with them?
LC: I prefer not to deal with the creatures of the swamp…
Sense Motive: 28, bad, worse. She believes she’s telling the truth.
LC: I shall meet you here tomorrow at this time for your answer.
She stands and leaves. On her way out, she says (in dwarven), “Have a wonderful evening, master dwarf.”
Z: We can solve the political struggle here by braining her.
K: You’ve been spending too much time around me.
Yorn and Granny chat…she says she has more power now, and wants to manipulate creation to reduce suffering and better the world. She cares not for politics but wants to stop those who would oppress the free. She did pass out for an hour or so. Yorn’s not sure we shouldn’t give the Kevonium to the gods, and that if we’d heard anyone talking like she just did, we’d probably stop them.
Yorn tells her not to become a god because that’s not our role. Granny says why not, the gods are awful at it.
Then eventually she realizes she’s dangerous to him and needs time, so she teleports away and messages Yorn:
G: I have gone away to protect you. I need time to figure this out. I will contact you later.
Y: What should I do? Where did you go? What do I tell Kev?
G: I need time to figure this out. Rejoin the group if you wish.
Y: Don’t get yourself killed. Don’t become a god.
The others have food provided to them in their room, then go to bed. They do not join the festivities in the hall.
A bit later, Granny Sends to Kev:
G: Kevonium is hard to master. Need to learn more to be safe. Contact more when safer. Getting guidance from Quethral.
K: You stole that shit and they’re pissed! Bring it back! They know how to use it; they’ll help you!
Kev tells Robin and Zantlin; Robin says they can’t just sit here.
Z: She’s trying to master Kevonium.
Z: At least she knows she’s dangerous. But understanding it makes her more dangerous.
R: That gives her the power of creation?
K: I know you are big picture guys, but I suspect she won’t master creation in a couple weeks. In the meantime if it keeps her from being crazy, that’s good.
R: But that’s not the answer the king wants.
Z: Either of them.
R: They both want the Kevonium, and now it’s not going to happen. We can’t even conk her on the head and take it.
K: It wasn’t the king, it was his mage guy. And I don’t trust him.
Speaking of Sildanus, has he continued to tail the party? As far as they know, he’s in his room.
Kev: If that guy just had an accident…or maybe, I shouldn’t just take care of every problem with my sword.
Yorn goes back into the fogbank and finds Granny gone, as she claimed.
Someone comes up to talk to Yorn with the ale…Yorn accosts the guy and tells him not to disturb Granny. The guy’s suspicious and Yorn is somewhat violent. Yorn leaves a note in Granny’s room, then goes across the hall to rest.
The rest of the party has dinner and goes to bed; Kev sleeps armed.
Granny rests overnight; nothing has been whispering to her (like her Rod). Actually, her Rod is speaking to her again like it normally does.
Granny meditates and tries to figure out what’s going on. She uses detection spells on herself (her aura is stronger), pulls out the Kevonium, and stares at it. K arcane 44 = as she learns to control Kevonium, she knows it’s trying to control her. That’s part of why she can accidentally control other people. If the aura touches other people, physical changes can happen to them (or any non-wizard). Stat changes, physical changes, give Granny better/worse senses. Usually but not always this is an enhancement.
The struggle for control is what causes the aura to be emitted…if she’s in control, no aura. Once she has successfully defeated the Kevonium 3 times, she’ll have it under control (and this might be able to happen overnight).
She continues to stare at it in quiet contemplation, and hopes that Quethral contacts her.
Morning arrives. We are in three different places.
Steve: Let’s split up and look for them!
Granny casts Greater Scrying first thing. Kev’s first. He fails his will save…then she casts Message.
She speaks; he wakes with a start and attacks the bed.
G: I am speaking from a distance with magic. We must discuss this with the group – get into a room with the others.
Granny also contacts Yorn. She says she’s not coming back to her room.
We all eat.
An hour passes and Granny calls again.
Granny asks Kev if they’re imprisoned; he says, “Not yet. But we will be. He’s pissed *tight* because you took his stuff!”
G: You know it’s too dangerous.
K: They’ve got more!
G: NO, they don’t. This was here from before the gods used it to make the world. They don’t have it in their shops.
K: The dwarves mine it!
G: Not Kevonium.
G: Since getting that last batch, I have opened up worlds of knowledge to me. It has been a struggle to contain the power safely. I apologize for leaving safely, Yorn, but something was attempting to leave me – some kind of energy like what affected Kev.
Kev: We own a boat. Let’s go into the ocean and dump it.
She did talk to QUethral, who advises her to continue learning. She wants Granny to join the fight against evil past her lifetime, when she’s ready.
Z: Didn’t she offer you a chance to become a demigod?
G: I still have much to learn. So I want to help those avoid suffering, especially near Blackmoor. We have found that they have apparently threats involving other dark forces moving against the nobility and people. I have also made sure the Kevonium didn’t fall into the wrong hands. So, I should do what I can to eliminate any more suffering…but returning the Kevonium is not on the table, as well it shouldn’t be. In their hands, it oculd be disastrous.
Y: Whose hands – the king, or the Egg people?
G: Anyone who can’t control it.
Z: Like Zantlin?
K: I’ll deal with the politics later, not like you care about it. And I don’t think they’ll hang us for stealing it. How long will it take you to figure it out?
G: I no longer risk causing anyone injury from the energy.
Y: So you’re good to go?
G: Yes. I’d like to help stop any further suffering in Blackmoor.
K: I don’t see how you can come back to Blackmoor.
Sildanus will know she returns…and he’ll be pissed. I don’t see it not leading to a fight.
Z: I think we should destroy it. Let’s consult the gods.
G: I spoke with my god and I have something for you from your goddess, with her blessing.
Z: What happens when you can’t control it? And you have spoken with *one* god.
We need to speak to more than one god, apparently.
Kev: You still can’t come back to Blackmoor. Why would I put you in range of them? I’ll never be able to smooth this over with you here.
G: I can hide the Kevonium in itself. No one will know I have it. But I won’t hide it; I must carry it. It’s not safe elsewhere.
Yorn: Can you hide it and come here, then lie about it?
G: Lying isn’t my strong suit…
K: Zantlin, how long will it take to commune with the gods?
Z: Quethral has given her ok, I guess. And I can talk to Arianna. But that’s only two.
G: If we’re going to help Blackmoor, I have to talk to their king.
K: To be honest Granny, you’ve been erratic and I need Zantlin happy…Can Yorn pray to Ulyiad? (of course). I can pray to Yidel.
G: I’d rather he didn’t answer.
Kev says he can talk his way out of being arrested.
Granny can set this up again tomorrow.
We need to find temples. There is a temple to Arianna on the grounds…it’s in the basement. There’s a temple carved into the rock that looks like a natural cave. He Consecrates the ground and casts Commune.
A golden-tressed dwarf meets him…he says they find the essence of creation, and it’s dangerous.
A: There is no way to remove it.
Z: I understand. How do I remove it from the grasp of mortals?
A: Find the remaining pieces and make something with it.
Z: How many pieces remain?
A: The quantity is unknown, but there is not much. Most of it was used at the time of creation.
Z: How can we find it?
A: There is one in your party sensitive to it.
Z: I don’t trust her.
A: Quethral trusts her.
Z: All the gods have their own plans.
A: To a degree, yes.
Z: Plan or no, she has been corrupted. I do not know to what degree.
A: She is the first mortal to have control it and remain sane. We are curious to know what she will do with this.
Z: What would you have me do? Find it and use it up so it’s gone?
A: That would be a noble goal.
Z: How do we find out what the other gods wish us to do?
A: I can ask some of them to join us. Who would you like to speak to?
(recommend Ulyiad, Yidel; not the Jokester or Yusel, etc.)
All of a sudden, the room fills up – Yidel, Hestal, Ulyiad all show up. They ignore Zantlin and speak to Arianna.
Hestal: There’s some of that stuff around yet? Cool! Where can I find it?
Z: There’s an old lady out in the woods.
A: Please, please. He has questions.
Zantlin explains that this should be out of the hands of mortals and mortal powers. How to keep it safe?
Ulyiad: It normally makes mortals insane. I have not kept an eye on…what did you say her name was? Is she a friend of yours – or Yorn’s?
Z: Yes, a travelling companion. She’s had it too long, although she claims to be able to control it.
Another lady shows up.
Q: You doubt my judgment?
Z: Yes! (he moves away from Quethral)
Q: You never stopped to think she might be my instrument in this world?
Z: I do!
Q: And you question me?
Z: I told Arianna I wanted to hear from multiple gods.
Quethral looks up at the other gods, who stare at her. They speak in a language he doesn’t understand.
A: I won’t tell you what to do. I have instructed you to rely on your judgment in the past. I recommend that you and your friend learn to work together if possible. You know the power it can have on your mind…has she shown signs of being insane or out of control?
Z: To my knowledge, yes.
A: Then maybe you should remain watchful of her.
Ulyiad speaks up: Each of us (points around) has subjects that are loyal to us. We do not generally interfere with the others’ believers. Arianna has already told you that she wants you to get along with Gertrude and watch her.
Z: I will see what can be done.
U: From my standpoint, I would like to see it collected and removed from any other mortals that might be able to handle it. There are people in this realm that are closely tied to it. They can sense it when they get close.
Z: Mm-hm. Should we eliminate them?
U: They may be able to harm themselves with it, or possibly do good. We trust you to decide.
Ulyiad gets up and leaves. Arianna sits next to him; Quethral continues whittling her stick.
Aaron: I’m sassin’ your god.
Q: I’ve given her a task.
Arianna and Hestal remain.
H: Where is any of it? I haven’t found any of it in ages.
Z: I know not where any of it exists at this time.
H: Oh well.
Hestal disappears with a gleam in his eye.
A: Anything else?
Z: No, ma’am.
Zantlin also wonders about other Lost Artifacts of Arianna.
Zantlin tells Kev the only way to get rid of it is to use it. We need to find the rest, make something, and then it’s gone…And there are other people who can sense this stuff. Some are good, some are not. We may need to take it away from some of them. Gods are confusing to talk to.
Kev: You summoned multiple gods?
Z: I just asked Arianna. She made it happen. Quethral did say that I should trust her judgment, and she gave Granny a quest. That doesn’t make me any happier.
K: Shush! I don’t want to talk about Quethral, especially if she’s hanging around. Now go meditate so I can talk to Robin.
Aaron: Neither Quethral or Arianna said anything about stuff from them…so I don’t trust anything you give me.
Zantlin wants to make something with the stuff. He’ll have a problem with her side quests for individual power.
Granny’s got questions – does she need to keep it on her to maintain her new power? If not, she starts forming a plan to remove it from play. K Arcane, K planes – 44/35. Not sure….she figures she’ll need to keep it on her.
After the communing, Zantlin goes to fetch Yorn via teleport. As they teleport out, there’s a knock at the door…”What did you do with the old lady across the hall!?”
Yorn: She’s fine. Zantlin, hit it!
Back in Newgate, they explain the situation to Yorn. Yorn thinks everyone is crazy and/or lying, and Chelsea is trying to set us up.
That afternoon, there’s a knock at the door. It’s Lady Chelsea, who is surprised at Yorn’s arrival. She didn’t remember his presence.
Kev: We must decline your offer to meet the dwarves. It would be inappropriate to go around your King’s back. We are here as diplomats.
LC: He is not well; I recommend you do this.
Kev: Nevertheless, our decision stands.
Yorn is about to suggest that Zantlin see the king, and is going to ask why their healers cannot help the king until he’s stopped by Kev.
She tells us we may regret it, but takes her leave. Sense Motives – Zantlin and Kev > 20…she’s leaving quietly but they feel she won’t let it rest.
Is there a temple to Ulyiad around here? In town…but the city gate will be closing in a half-hour.
Robin and Yorn head out to the temple and will spend the night in an Inn or something. Halfway there, spot…26 and 18. From tree-to-tree, several small humanoids are following us. They look almost orcish. The one Yorn spots has bright blue eyes…
Yorn: If you got something to say to us, come on out so we can talk like civilized people.
They surround us, and 1 says they’re looking for dinner…for the Egg.
Yorn: I don’t think we’re what you’re looking for.
1: Oh, you’re *exactly* what we’re looking for.
Yorn charges 1.
Robin’s up – he turns and runs to 8 (blue eyed) and hits for 12 damage. Yorn makes a will save from 4 (?). Same thing from 3…and 7 on Robin.
1 charges Yorn with a spear…and misses. Yorn slaps him upside the head with a crit and knocks him out. Then he moves up next to 5.
5 casts and it grows dark around Yorn. Robin beats on 8 several times. Yorn then fails a will save…the voice asks him to come with. Yorn gets a 6…
Y: I can come with, but I got places to go. This isn’t going to take long, is it?
8 takes a 5’ step back and casts. Robin makes his Will save. 2 casts on Robin and he makes his save. 7 casts on Robin and he fails…he falls asleep. Wait, no he doesn’t! He’s got too many HD.
Yorn: Quit yawning! You can take a nap when you get there.
Dude asks Yorn to come with; Yorn can’t see very well, so but they wander off. Robin follows, breaking out of the encirclement. They follow him…one does 17 subdual. 2 moves up to Robin and casts Darkness.
Yorn: You know, man, this would be easier if you dropped the darkness.
He follows along, but they drop the darkness. Robin runs the other way, swapping his sword for bow, and escapes the darkness. 8 moves towards Robin.
Robin slips out of the darkness silently and attempts to follow in the direction of Yorn. 2 moves off towards 5.
Yorn and friends are still moving…he calls out for Robin to catch up. Robin starts to run, and Yorn can hear him.
In two more rounds, Robin catches up with Yorn and his new friends. Robin slows down to match them.
Top of round – Robin’s up. He moves up behind Yorn…and the three who were tailing him follow behind.
We walk for 15 minutes or so and come up to a cave mouth. They say they’re going inside to meet friends; Yorn pulls out a continual flame stone, sheathes his sword, and enters. Robin and the other three don’t go inside.
8, to Robin: You are welcome to join as well.
Robin stands there.
Aaron: Be careful! It might be a timeshare.
Yorn: Come on!
Yorn stops in the hallway and yells at Robin again. He continues and the tunnel starts to open up into a wider cave.
2, 7, 8: Don’t you want to join your friend?
He steps and fires, starting to lay waste into the enemies. 8 falls; he hits 2, and hits 2.
Yorn thinks he hears the sounds of combat outside but his new friends say it’s just cave noise.
2: You should have just followed!
2 misses. Robin shoots 2 for 18, 20 (drops him), and 7 for 20.
Yorn and company enter the cave…there is a brazier in the center of the room that illuminates it. There is a strange, large creature in the corner.
Yorn: Who’s this? Are you the Egg?
Dude: No, but I am a priest of the Egg. Welcome!
Y: They said I can come learn about the Egg, but I don’t want to worship it.
Dude: Oh, by morning you will!
Yorn: They said you could teach me, and I’m here to learn. So start teaching!
At the end of the round, he starts walking towards Yorn.
Robin shoots 7 for 15, 14, and 17 (dead).
Big 1 walks up to Yorn, says, “I am glad I can teach you,” and bends down to bite Yorn in the head.
Dude bites Yorn for 4…a bulbous mouth clamps over his neck – Fort save! Yorn gets a 28…and the charm is broken.
Robin sneaks into the hallway.
4, 5, 6, and 3 start to chant in some other language (orcish).
Yorn does not pull his head out, but draws his sword and guts the creature for 51. It roars and misses…so he didn’t get to latch on, either. Robin hears a big roar and chanting down the hallway. He starts to run and spots 6.
4 attempts to hold Yorn tight and misses. Yorn AOO’s with a crit, killing 4. He cleaves onto 3 but can’t drop him. 6 attempts to poke Yorn and hits for 9. 5 pokes Yorn and misses.
Yorn slaughters 3 and cleaves onto 1, but can’t hit after that. The creature hits for 5 and Yorn makes his save.
Robin moves up and skewers 6 for 15. 6 moves to Robin but misses him.
5 hits Yorn for 10 points. Yorn hits the big one for 50, then cleaves and kills 5. Then he steps towards Robin.
Yorn: You have a stupid friend – all he wanted to do is chew my head off! You’ve got a stupid cult!
Robin and Yorn dispatch the remaining dude with haste.
We will loot this cult room next week.
