More vigilantes, more fun!
We called up the rest of our super-powered friends and got them to help us break into Alfred Santiago's drug processing facility / lair. We kicked his ass and sort of rescued Natalie Ruiz, who was being siphoned of her blood to fill syringes of super-juice. Unfortunately, when we called up our friends at the new agency of super-hero control they assured us they'd take good care of her...so we may not have saved her after all.
See you in a year!
August 27, 2017
When we last left our protagonists, we had partied with some gangbangers dealing in blood that gives a person temporary power. Inexplicably we got the name of their supplier *without* having to beat anyone up.
We know about Alfred Santiago, and based on some visions from Gino, Natalie Ruiz is being drained of her blood somewhere…that’s where these shots are coming from. And somebody figured all this out really, really quickly.
We run Alfred through the cop-on-a-stick app…Gordon’s investigate is +5. Brett Mahoney (we know that guy!) mentions a suspected…they think he’s operating out of an abandoned medical/industrial building in East Boston. He’s a known drug dealer specializing in everything…he manages to catch every trend in drugs. He’s at $address, East Boston. Single story, bars on the windows, small parking lot with a security gate and cinder block fence topped in razor wire. The biomed company went under about 15 years ago and has been bouncing around in court ever since.
We start talking about what to do; Mick teleports us over there and sends off a drone to take a peek. The building is more or less as expected but there are several groups of presumed hoodlums in the parking lot crowded around several barrel fires. Three of them are sitting on the stoop near the entrance door. The roof is tar paper…Owen teleports him over once the drone can provide him a spot. We can barely see him on visual, he hides so well.
Owen looks around and finds a trap door in the roof. It’s old and rusty, so it’s certainly going to be squeaky. And likely locked from the inside.
Mick says they’ve all got phones in their pockets, but he’s not getting much from inside the building.
What’s our goal? Well, we want to rescue Natalie. What about Santiago – do we want to kill him, arrest him, or what? Well, the cops might want him but they’d need a SWAT team and an MRAP to do it…and a couple guys in blue would go down in the course of the firefight.
Dan suggests creating a distraction while we go in through the roof.
If someone hands Santiago to the cops on a platter, they’d take him in. Since there’s a super here, our friendly governmental task force would probably get involved. Might not go too well for Natalie, but we could get Santiago off the street.
Do we need to teleport Mick’s car onto the roof?
Mick: That would be really cool, but no internet.
It’s pretty clear that some of the people in the parking lot are empowered. The ones that aren’t, are probably a round from doing so.
Windows are barred on the outside and boarded up on the inside. Front door seems quite usable, like it was replaced. It’s a security door, of course.
Mick says he can call his friends and keep the hoods in the parking lot busy.
Darren: Is your girlfriend willing to get shot at?
Mick: Are you kidding? She’s got a lot of pent-up stress. This would make her day.
A few minutes later, Bruno, Terry, and Raina roll up in another Lexus. Mick gets out of the car, wearing armor – the carbon-fiber-looking seat is now molded around him. We’re all on the roof.
We all get a text saying, “turn off your phones. You’ll know when to turn them back on.”
Gordon turns into Body of Titanium.
The scene starts as the security gate blows up in a red flash – lasers. Someone collateral-damaged that gate with eye lazors. The B-team steps up into the gap, and Mick waves his hands. He collateral damages and explodes every cellphone and electronic in the parking lot.
Darren: Looks like our signal to go!
The rest of the group starts flinging stuff, shooting eye lazors, etc. There is lots of mayhem, but they’re taking them out and not killing them.
Gordon gets a good grip on the hatch and yanks it off. Security has been bypassed. There’s a 10’ drop down to the room below, and an old ladder. It’s dark inside.
Lenny turns his phone back on and uses the flashlight to reveal a utility room. Darren grabs a piece of pipe. Owen cracks the door and it opens into a hallway lined with offices. There is an eerie glow coming from down the hallway. He skulks down the hallway (+3) towards the glow.
This used to be a nice lab once upon a time. That time has passed. He understands Gino’s vision; he spots a woman lying spread out on a hospital bed with needles and IV’s everywhere. There are medical-type machines; the heart beepy thing is still beeping so she’s alive.
The woman is clearly unconscious. The three thugs in the room are definitely not unconscious. Owen recognizes some of the medical equipment; one of his clients needed dialysis. Based on the amount of stuff hooked into her, she can’t just be unplugged and/or teleported out.
We’re going to need a doctor for this. Does Darren know anyone who’d be smart enough to help out here but foolish enough to want to? Contacts +4 – a Billy Rodriguez, who Darren met back in college, moved back into this part of Boston after retirement. Not sure how he feels about superpowered people, but he’s in the neighborhood.
No signal inside…Darren goes up on the roof and makes a call. He uses a couple football references and convinces Billy to “get back in the game for one more quarter”…he retired to take care of his mom. Darren did mention that a friend of his was being held captive by “those people who were nailing dudes up on garages” and stuff. The scene outside the building is *not* safe for normal people to enter.
Lenny’s got an idea – make an illusion of a guy who makes a portal, steps into the portal, and then makes it look like the room’s empty. Or something…
Sounds like outside is being handled. The guys inside, 3 or more, are our problem. We’ll go down the hallway and kick their asses.
Darren duplicates Gordon’s Body of Steel …he’s got +2 Physique and an extra Mild. He also slaps Lenny with a +2 powerup.
Owen will teleport in as the rest of us move in.
Gordon moves over and opens the door. He’s blocking the door to provide cover. There are three guys in here.
A = powered, kind of looks like Lenny – influence and telepathy. Also looks like the mug shot.
B, T = blinking, smashy punchy powers...only temporary
Darren moves in next to Gordon and calls out, “Lenny, get the one in the back!”
The one we’re guessing is Al says, “Leave my house!” and attempts to munch our brains. Darren rolls +6 will; Gordon gets +5. He got a +8. Gordon now has the aspect, “Hesitant”. Actually Darren wasn’t affected yet.
Owen teleports in behind A…or not, because someone screwed up the zone. He tries again…and fails again. B punches Gordon in the chest and rolls a -1…Gordon gets a 7 (thank you, “Take the blow”). He has Double Spin on B.
Lenny tells A, “Bad boy – stand in the corner!” He taps, “I want to help the little people” and gets a +5 on his influence. Al taps, “Home Turf” and makes it a tie. 1 stress for Al.
T moves to square off with Darren and hits him. Gordon attacks B with using one spin and hits +3 with another +2 for Weapon:pipe:2. It deals 3 damage but no spin.
Al uses some kind of mental blast on Lenny. Lenny defends to 1; he can’t come up with a way to tap an aspect. That’s a 3-box and Spin.
Owen again attempts to enter the room. It doesn’t work so he moves into the room on foot and approaches A.
B punches Gordon and misses.
Lenny: Stand in the corner! (+1 vs. a 5 or something)…Dude has a defensive aspect vs. Lenny now.
T punches Darren…defend to +4, so 1 stress.
In the spirit of what Aaron would do, Gordon decides to hit a motherfucker with another motherfucker. He attempts to grab B for +7 (double spin).
Darren attempts to grab T (physique) and creates an aspect (Held) for Gordon to use next round. Plus, next round maybe he can steal T’s strength.
Owen attempts to grab A and succeeds. Al is Held (in preparation for running his head into the wall).
Al: Get out of here!
Owen’s Will +5 is enough to reduce this to 2 stress.
T attempts to kidney punch Darren…and takes a single stress (up to 2-box).
Lenny decides this isn’t going to work, so he’ll leap onto A from the table, Johnny Nacho style. Fight (Fate point for Go Big or Go Home)…+3 total. It’s a tie, so he gets a Boost (one-time usable aspect).
Gordon beats a motherfucker with another motherfucker. Fight +7 (using two situational aspects). That hits…Mike decides a Motherfucker is weapon:1, unless that motherfucker happens to be made of metal. T takes 4 damage and suffers some spin (“Wind knocked out”, not “motherfuckered”). The guy used as a battering ramp ate 1 point. This is enough to put a consequence on T (aka Tiny).
Darren wants to steal T’s power and recover some strength. Since he’s got the “physical recovery” SE on Duplication, we need to use the Fight roll as the chance to succeed with style. Tapping two aspects Darren gets a +8 and that’s enough. Darren is no longer made of Iron, but no longer has any boxes.
Tiny’s Winded is no longer free, but Gordon has two spins left for Baby.
Al is next…he uses a mental blast on Johnny Nacho and taps the spin he got. Will +5 (using the boost) vs. Al’s 7. That’s a mental 2-box.
Lenny: Bad touch!
Baby attempts to kick Gordon in his titanium nuts…and Gordon gets spin again.
Owen attempts to ramp A into the wall (no free tap this time). Fight vs fight…Owen plows him into the wall indeed for a 3-box and spin.
Lenny attempts to grapple Al. +5 is enough to get spin and advantage.
Gordon uses two separate spins on Baby and clubs Tiny again. He gets +9 on the fight roll…Tiny comes in at +4. That’s not enough…Tiny is taken out. Cracked ribs and unconscious. He didn’t concede, so no fate points.
Darren takes one Trussed up and beats Al with Tiny’s power at +7. Al got +2…single spin and 6 boxes. 2-box and a moderate.
Darren: What are you doing to her, and how did you know what to do?
Al: I did this!
He expends a wave of mental energy…psychic lockdown. He can attempt to essentially paralyze us.
Needless to say, his MO will be to escape after that…he’ll move out of the zone.
Owen is next…we all will get +2 on our Will checks. Owen’s +3 vs. Al’s less than that…Owen can act. He’ll try to hold him from moving…physique rolls, and the room is Cluttered. +5 vs Al’s +4.
Baby doesn’t have the Will to break out of Psychic Lockdown.
Lenny’s Will +3 vs Al’s +3…so he’s free. Lenny can move, so he tries to Fight Al…he uses the consequence, the spin, and Owen’s re-held. Fight +10 vs +1…severe consequence and a 2-box; he’s absolutely wrecked. Cracked Skull, etc.
If we succeed Darren needs to call his friends at the WTFBBQ agency to come get Al.
Owen asks Baby what they’re doing to her.
Baby: Uh, they draw her blood. And it gets people up. I don’t know how they do it; there’s machines.
O: You’re not going to cause any trouble for us? We’ll send you away with the bad man, and where he’s going they don’t come back.
B: No, sir.
Darren goes to look through the window out front…the fight is essentially over. The B-team has mopped up. There are definitely less than twelve, so either they ran or Raina threw them out of the scene.
Baby: There was a dude that Al paid…they called him, “the biologist”. Last I heard he went to New York City. Can I go?
Lenny will call his agent “friend” to come collect Al.
Darren pokes his head into the room with Natalie to see what her powers are…she’s clearly special, but he’s not sure if he can touch her. She is comatose…other than the needles, there’s not a scratch on her. Not sure if this is medically induced or a result of psychic damage. It does look like there’s blood coming out of her right now. Looks like something’s being extracted…the fight scene was used to process the blood to make the shots. Lots of empty pens and a few full ones.
To Darren’s untrained eye, this doesn’t appear to be a medically induced coma. Her body looks healthy-ish, so Darren touches her. She has Power Amplification and a special enhancement of “universal donor”…her blood can be used to empower people. She is powered and if conscious, may have some of the other accessory powers (nullification and/or duplication).
Darren will go to get Billy while Lenny talks to his agent friend. When Darren goes outside, he advises the B-team that they may want to leave if they’re not interested in talking to federal men.
Mick wants to go inside and see Al…Darren sends him in to talk to Owen. Mick munches Al’s phone and emails it to Owen. Then Owen asks what the machinery is.
Mick: It says it’s a blood processing unit. Man, these guys are assholes. Good news is they hadn’t really ramped up production. There were only 50 doses given out. This needs to come apart.
Owen: Not until she’s out and safe. We don’t know if this is what’s keeping her alive or not.
Mick: No, that’s its friend (points). He’s cool over here.
Then the blood processor powers down.
O: Was that you?
M: I just told it what it was doing and sometimes they feel guilty. No, that one there is doing good work…it’s keeping her alive, not drawing anything out.
O: Tell that one to keep it up.
Owen notices Mick glance at Natalie, but he spends more time looking at the machinery. It’s not that he doesn’t care, he just has a lot more empathy for machines right now. Or maybe Raina would kick his ass for looking at another woman.
Lenny calls Agent Washington.
L: Hi sweetie. I have someone for you.
AW: Are we doing this again?
L: You’re the super-powered clean up crew.
They banter some and she’s unhappy, but she asks him for the address just the same.
L: There’s a really nasty drug dealer with mental super-powers, Alfred Santiago. Some people were getting superpowers by stabbing themselves with something, and we tracked it back to this Santiago. You know how Boston sucks, right? We came in and took him down, but also found that he’s got these massive mind powers. I tackled him and bashed his head…now he’s blindfolded and tied up, and he needs a doctor for his cracked skull. But he’s here for you.
At some point she called on the radio, “all units respond to $address”, and asks him if he’s on-site.
What Lenny didn’t hear were words like “rapid response team” “mop-up”, “Mr. Cooper’s there”, and “debriefing”.
She thanks him and says she’ll see us shortly.
Darren thanks everyone else…Raina thanks him for the fun. She’s one to watch as a future vigilante. As they depart, they all high-five and Darren checks just to see what’s there. Darren borrows Telekinesis.
Darren meets Billy, tells him they were doing a little investigative work, and then says they were looking at some kind of blood-borne superpower thing. Things got ugly but they also found who was being drained and she looks like an octopus. They want to get her out of here as soon as possible.
Owen and Mick walk past Darren and Billy as they get into the patient room.
Darren: See what you needed to see?
Mick: Yup. Make sure he goes away. You good here?
D: Yeah. You’ve had a long day but she looks pretty excited. I’m sure someone else will be driving tonight, so don’t waste your chance.
Lenny’s talking to someone on the phone. Owen and Gordon disappear…again.
When Billy gets into the medical room, he’s shocked and horrified.
BR: Not to sound heartless, but this is very efficient.
Darren: What do you mean?
BR: It’s perfectly metered. They’re not taking too much to kill her, and they’re making it back up over here. You said it’s drug dealers?
Darren: Yup. There are needles everywhere in the other room.
BR: No Boston drug dealers did this. Some Evil Genius was at work.
He starts shutting off the output side, but says he doesn’t want to do the other side.
D: They said something about “The Biologist”, so they did have help.
He asks about disconnecting her and starts to check her out.
D: You think she needs an ambulance?
BR: I don’t know why she’s in a coma. None of this stuff (points at bags) would do that.
Lenny comes in and says that the drug dealer probably did something to her mind with his mind powers.
BR: Mind powers? That does absolutely nothing to help me bring her back to consciousness.
Lenny: Hot lips will be here soon, so we need to move her now or they’ll take her.
Lenny continues to natter until Darren tells him to visualize in his head. It fails, so the room gains the illusion of some kind of torture dungeon featuring Agent Washington.
BR: I know I can’t help her. There’s some kind of trauma beyond my scope of sports medicine.
We advise him that maybe he doesn’t want to be here, and he agrees. So, Billy says our intervention was a good thing; he shakes our hands (Lenny’s quite reluctantly) and takes off.
Washington shows up first and is surrounded by DHS. Hough is there shortly afterwards.
AW: Funny we’d see you two again. Together.
D: What can I say, we’re on a hot streak.
AW: Just reporting, right?
D: The news seems to follow Lenny.
Lenny summarizes. The metal guy was here but disappeared.
We ask about the medical crew…there are at least three people who need a ride. One guy who left beat the other guy up really bad. This guy kept blasting me in the head. We don’t mention Natalie’s name.
We do our best to not tell any names. Lenny claims to have used vast quantities of illusion and says that there were some people here we didn’t know about. Maybe Metal Man has the ability to blow up cellphones.
Washington has her people check their ID’s. When she checks Santiago, she pulls up his record and says that they need to call the DEA…and they’ll take the credit.
AW: Take it up with them.
Lenny tells AW that he’s got mind powers.
AW starts talking about their organizational cooperation with the DEA. Hough looks it over, finds Natalie in the other room, and goes over there. Darren follows and says she must be the one they’re siphoning something out of.
Hough says they’ll check her out and she’ll get a much nicer ride than Santiago.
H: Thank you?
He’s not sure if he wants to thank us or not; we are unlicensed, and this is highly irregular, but it’s getting results.
As Lenny continues, Linda warns us that if needed she could send another containment unit.
D: He’s just being Lenny Cooper.
Mike says something about Lenny changing his high concept to “Super-powered Rock Star Private Eye”.
