I always wondered when we would get our flying cars
We had our first couple of conflicts and didn't see anyone killed. But car insurance premiums look to be going up. We did save Gino and his visions, which we shared with the group, suggest that we should be working together or should plan to die in ditches (etc.) by ourselves. However, we don't know *what* it is we need to do together.
May 21, 2017
Next Sunday, no game. Beers and burning at Mike’s house.
Owen grabs Gino’s legs to help hold him up. A note lies on the ground having been kicked off the bed.
“I’m sorry. I can’t deal with knowing. Gino”
As Owen grabs Gino, he gets a sense of the noise in Gino’s head. Along with this he takes a 2-box of mental stress from the flood of realities and futures he sees. One of them comes into focus – he’s looking at a wall of TV’s in a sports bar and one of them shows the four of us standing in heroic poses…together, we defeated or overcame something and we’re really proud of it. Another screen shows four split screens individually, all with our asses kicked or some other kind of bad fate because we’re alone. Use your imagination.
Then he snaps back to reality as a cop is untying the noose. Gino is messed up pretty bad and unconscious.
Notice and Empathy – 0 and -2. He’s definitely unconscious but breathing.
Darren hears the commotion and runs in. When he hits the door, the EMT’s are already working on Gino. Empathy = +1…Gino is a precog, which we didn’t officially know until now. He clearly just tried to hang himself…but his mind overloaded. This could very well be a side effect of being powered. Based on his physical injuries, he’ll be taking a ride to the hospital (Massachussetts General). He seems pretty unresponsive, but that may be either due to injuries or mental overload.
Darren helps Owen grab Gino and get him down…he gets the same vision about being all together. Darren takes a 2-box…Gino is some kind of conduit and is charting the future of the whole city. It feels like the whole world just ran through his head.
He’s a basic precog, master precog, Visions. Clear drawback is that he can’t turn off this power. His Collateral damage is “Future Echoes”…you fill the brains of everyone around with visions…everyone else in the scene is confused and disoriented. Any attack is at -4 because they aim where the person is about to be. His power is overpowering him right now.
Darren realizes no one else in the room is empowered, so he nullifies the zone. Gino starts breathing easier, and his vitals stabilize.
Owen realizes that around this time, something feels different. He would have a hard time disappearing if he needed to. Something in here is dampening the effect…but Gino relaxed. Quite weird.
Gordon and Lenny hang outside to stay out of the way.
Darren looks at Owen knowingly as soon as he has the vision, but then they take Gino down together.
Darren borrows the Vision power from Gino and wonders, “Will he be ok?” Yes, he will survive this scene. However, having seen two of his *own* futures it’s clear to Darren that his is not entirely clear. He sees the EMT’s show up and haul him to Mass General…then transferred to the VA hospital…then him walking out with a bag of effects. No idea of time scale.
Darren: It looks like he’ll be ok, but we need to wait for the EMT’s.
We discuss Drawbacks on Power Duplication…in this case, I do get the drawback here. When I duplicate powers, I may be subject to its effects (like an Aspect in this case).
Darren also experiences the flood of emotions and futures and it’s clear why Gino’s brain was overloading. He’s not handling it very well and might have died; there may be drugs in his future.
Darren backs up when the EMT’s arrive and says, “he seems ok, but he was thrashing around a little bit. He might need something to keep him calm.”
They pack him up and take him off to the hospital.
As we step out of the room, the Sergeant at the desk asks Owen if he’s here for anyone else.
O: Not today!
S: He’s your only one.
O: Alright, see you tomorrow!
We adjourn to a bar for a discussion. Do we belong together or not…which future is real?
On the way to the bar (about 5 blocks from the station), Lenny buys his weed back from Owen. As they finish the deal, a guy comes out of the alley shouting, “What the hell? Who are you and why are you doing that in my neighborhood?!”
Lenny: Can’t we pass some oregano around? See?
This guy is a nameless NPC, so Lenny’s influence will crush his spirit. He hits for +3 and the guy says, “Oh yeah, looks like oregano after all. Have a nice night. Boston Strong!” Notice checks…0, +3, +6: we both notice that three of this guy’s buddies were in the alley. Gordon notices that they were all armed and seem pissed that this didn’t escalate.
Gordon: We should get out of here.
Owen: Sure. First round’s on me!
About a half-block later, a car pulls up next to us. It looks familiar…window rolls down, and a guy says, “Dude! What are you walking around for?”
It’s Mick, our uber driver.
Mick: Going to Callahan’s? Get in!
Eric: No, it’s O’dollar-sign’s.
Darren checks out Mick for a moment…he’s smart, really smart and has an affinity for machines. And apparently Lenny, but that may just be fanboy-ism.
He drops us off and Lenny says he’ll call when we’re done.
So, we sit down and talk about all the weird stuff going on. Darren shows the group his news feed on the phone…and the wire reports are full of strange events. Do we want to be at the forefront of this, or be quiet about it, etc.?
As we talk some about weird stuff, Mick’s SUV tumbles down the street – like rolls. Owen poofs over to the door. We throw down some cash and run to see what’s going on. Just as we get to the door, we see the vehicle smash up against a building and fall.
There are a few people across the road but only one staring intently at the SUV. It’s a young Japanese woman…looks like she’s Telekinetic.
Mick is starting to climb out of what used to be a sunroof.
Mick: I can explain!
Girl: You bastard!
This is clearly a confrontation between Mick and this woman.
Gordon’s first. He goes outside (move 1 zone) and attempts to determine her Aspects…
She appears to have Aspects “unleashed potential” and high concept “Medical student”. Trouble is “Jealous girlfriend”.
Darren Sprints out of the bar and into her zone, shouting, “Everybody calm down!” Then he Nullifies the zone.
Lenny runs outside and tries to calm her down, “Calm you crazy bitch! Go to sleep!”
Girl: Whatever, this isn’t about you!
She appears to be quite willful.
She hoists Mick’s car and attempts to swat him with that.
“I’m going to smash you with the car you pick all those women up with!”
Mick makes an Athletics roll with a +2 bonus due to power nullification. She smacks him with the car just as he says, “I can explain!” He’s tumbled over and knocked aside, and has taken a Mild Consequence. She couldn’t crush him with the car.
Owen runs out, grabs Mick, and attempts to teleport him into the car. He succeeds on his power check with a Fair.
Mick doesn’t want Owen to grab him and tries to shake him off.
M: No, no, I can talk her down!
Owen does lay hands on him, then poofs out. Owen’s not happy about this. He is momentarily confused but not as confused as one might think.
Owen speaks from the doorway: Honey, this is not what you think. It’s my job right now!
As he tries to explain this, it sounds awful – even if it’s the truth, we don’t want to believe him.
Gordon attempts to turn into titanium and succeeds. Then he prepares to Block if she flings a car at the bar.
Darren: Just calm down for a minute! He really is an uber driver – he was taking us around. Just put down the car and we’ll talk about it. Darren gets a +3 Rapport; she fails so the advantage “listening to reason” applies.
Lenny attempts to use Influence to help out Mick’s case…”these cars didn’t do anything to you! Stop throwing stuff and listen!”
Lenny gets +8…and barely beats her with style. She can either comply or take Mental Stress. He’s giving her this command because he doesn’t really know that the area is being suppressed.
She lowers the car onto its wheels, goes full defense, and says, “Ok, talk.”
Owen waits because all he can do is make this worse.
Mick comes out and walks in front of Gordon.
Mike declines to roll-play against himself but Mick uses Darren’s Advantage, explains that times are tough, says he gets texts because he’s a taxi driver, etc. He rolls well and taps some aspects…they chatter for a bit, and he “wins”.
Within a few minutes they are hugging it out in the shadow of a crushed car and damaged building. He says he’s going to take her home, and we wish him well as they drive off.
We talk about what just happened and why it got harder to use powers all of a sudden. Darren apologized for that being him. And that he tried to help Gino out by suppressing the flood of futures.
We will end it here. Minor milestone: swap two skills or swap an average with one not on our sheet. Change any single stunt. Purchase a new stunt if we have refresh. Change any aspect not High Concept.
We walk back in and buy another round. The bartender is somewhat surprised but realizes we tipped well, and stops paying attention.
A few minutes later, Lenny gets a message on Twitter. It’s not Stephen Tyler. @mickfromBOS tells him, “Thanks for your help with that situation. She gets a little high-spirited at time, but I love her. I don’t know what would have happened if you turned her in.”
@lenny – NPD. I’ll uber when you get a new car
@mickfromBOS – any time. Car will be fixed tomorrow.
We trade contact information and call it a night. It’s a work night for some of us, so Darren and Gordon bail. Owen and Lenny stay for one more round.
Item summoning – they don’t come from anywhere…Owen creates them from nothing. Simpler = easier.
In the morning we go to our respective jobs. Owen is not surprised to see that Gino’s not there. Anything interesting in the news? Darren is spared his trip to Pawtucket in lieu of interviewing the 6-year old kid who lifted a car off his dad. There is already a TV crew there. The interview is challenging because the kid was six…he was scared his daddy would die, and then he was out from under the car. The Newton PD report provides enough background to write a few hundred words of fluff. The kid *does* have super-strength…this wasn’t adrenaline, and either he’s going to be terror for his parents or he’ll be heading back to Krypton.
Darren asks the kid if he can show how he did it, and since he’s never had the chance to Amplify anyone’s powers, he’ll give that a try. The kid succeeds spectacularly and throws a car four zones…and Darren gets it on film. The father is no longer amused, and it’s possible that this could end up on the web…but it’s not clear whether or not they got the release.
The remains of the car are in worse shape than Mick’s car, because this one had more altitude…and it’s impaled on a tree about 500 yards away.
Darren files the story with the newspaper including the video. Darren places a few calls with some of his contacts saying that they should contact the kid for training and/or promotional opportunities.
The video does go viral; some people cry out, “Shop!”
Lenny – Is this how you keep a low profile?
Darren - *I* didn’t throw the car, and they sent me to do the story. Wherever a story takes me…
