We dealt with the attack on the ship, which appears to have been partially motivated by the King of Blackmoor's sister. Kev went to talk to the King of Illiostal who, after being attacked and nearly killed by someone who may be related to Blackmoor, said, "Go back and do what I told you. I want that Kevonium before the war."
Back in Blackmoor we decided to continue heading to Newgate. We had to wait for another boat, at which time Sildanus said he wanted to go find some Kevonium in the area. Before he got there, Granny teleported ahead and nabbed it herself. Now she's hiding with Yorn back by the Elves, Sildanus is ready to declare her a fugitive, and the rest of the party is going to meet with the King (recently de-cursed by Zantlin) and his sister (who the king doesn't suspect).
This is gonna get ugly.
February 5, 2017
15 x level, ½ PEP for showing up.
We are belowdecks on our boat, and have heard the cry again for froglins. The ship is running aground…
We all hastily jerk on some armor and prepare to head up. Most of us hear the sounds of combat pause as a voice says, “Ship ours! Klatt kill him if you move!”
We hear feet stomping down belowdecks, and doors being opened up. We head up. As we prepare to head out, some wicked-looking humanoids dressed in red, black, and cured flesh are out in the hallways. Their arrows have barbed teeth.
5 points his spear at Yorn. Yorn shouts, “Out of my way!”
5 says, “I no move! Back in the room!”
Robin draws and fires for 9 points to 5. Zantlin continues to put his armor on. Kev moves 5’ and attacks 5, then keeps moving. Spring attack! He crits once for 26 points, killing it…then moves onto 2 and hits for 19 and 17 and 12. This ends up killing 2 as well.
4 steps up to Kev and misses. Yorn runs up and starts laying about, killing three of them.
Yorn and Kev have to make will saves as someone comes down the stairs. G, who looks a lot like the guys we just fought, has on better equipment and appears more skilled somehow. Dude just cast Confusion. Yorn fails his saving throw.
Granny undelays. She whips out a scroll of Dispel Magic and attempts to dispel the Confusion. She gets a Level 16 caster check.
Robin starts shooting G for 8, 9, and 11. Zantlin is still dressing. Kev steps to the left and attacks G for 16, 12, 15, and a miss.
Yorn felt himself confused for a second, but it cleared. Yorn attacks G through the stairs and drops him.
From above, a similar-sounding voice shouts out, “What’s going on down there!?”
A shadowy figure from above blocks the light.
Granny, to us – we should head upstairs and quell this disturbance.
Yorn: Just clearing out the trash. (bluff = 6)
Dude: Who is this?
Robin starts moving up…there’s another guy at the top of the stairs who’s dressed even better. Robin rips off an arrow – 10 points. He doesn’t seem to take all that damage.
Zantlin: Can someone help me with this buckle?
The guy at the top of the stairs…
Kev heads up the steps…partway up, he notices a ton of froglins on deck and a bigger, badder one of these critters at the top of the stairs.
Dude: And now you die!
Kev: Wait until the poison kicks in!
Kev finishes going up the stairs and gets next to the dude.
Kev: Doesn’t have to be like this. If you leave right now, you get to live.
Dude: Why would we let any humans live?
Kev: Ok. Yorn!
Granny ends her delay and casts Enlarge on Kev and Yorn. Yorn climbs up to see a mixture of froglins and these critters on deck. He spots the dude who appears to be in charge and crits him for 67.
Yorn: Kev told you to get off the boat, and we’ll make you do it! If you want I can throw you overboard, or you can wait and we’ll dump your parts to the fishes!
Intimidate = 22.
The dude drops his spear and hangs his flail at his belt.
Dude: You great warrior. How much you pay me to leave? Pretty lady pay me well to take ship. You pay me well to leave.
Yorn: WE’ll let you keep your life. That’s a good start.
Kev: You were paid to come here, and now you want pay to leave. I want you to tell me who paid you.
Dude: That’s extra.
Kev: I don’t know what the rates are around here so I’m going to make you an initial offer. I don’t wish to insult you – I will give you 2000 gold.
D: I want pretties – gems.
Kev pulls out some diamonds. “Like these?”
D: I can sell those. Four.
Kev: I’ll give you two – that seems like a lot.
D: Not when you have spellcasters. Four is my price.
Kev: And the name…
Kev’s diplomacy 19…
D: Very well.
Kev drops four gems, and the guy pockets them.
D: Lady Chelsa.
K: Thank you. Now, before we have any more unpleasantness…
D: Of course.
Dude snaps his fingers and his raiders begin to rapidly depart the ship.
Granny checks the guys below…
*359 studded leather
Torches, clay mug, crowbar,
*361 heavy flail
Two white opals 700 each
Finely wrought gold bracelet 80 gp.
5 lb of powdered gold @ 25 gp.
The Spellwise is bound and gagged; the crew is untying him. The Baron is also on decks.
Svenson, the councilmember, comes to Kev and thanks him.
SV: I didn’t think our new crew could be overtaken so easily.
Granny knows that Lady Chelsa was who the king was heading to visit…Lady Chelsa Walcraft.
Kev: What does that mean?
Granny: Good question.
Kev: Is she in line for the throne?
Baron: She’s not directly in line
Yorn claims that someone doesn’t want us to come fix the king’s problem. Everyone always wants us to clean up their mess.
Kev, Granny: Yorn, shut up! Go clean up these bodies.
Yorn and Robin are told to shush. They loot the bodies and get rid of them.
The king had his guard with him – 20 men.
Granny: Once the king cleans up his mess, we’ll come back.
Kev: We need to talk about this.
Yorn strips down and helps shove the ship off the shoals.
Zantlin wants us to leave.
Granny isn’t sure why we should get in the way of this woman and her king.
Robin: We won’t be able to establish relations with the king if he’s dead. Isn’t that why we’re here?
Granny: We need to figure out who’s in charge, and talk to them. That’s our missions.
Robin: An unstable kingdom to the south won’t help Illiostal.
Yorn: This is a trap, but we may as well figure out what we’re up against anyway.
Kev: If I was a king and I wanted to send out a diplomatic team, and I had *this* bunch of clowns (meaning us), they’re not my first choice unless I thought there was some serious trouble. There’s no trade with this place yet…he’s afraid that either there’s war that’s going to spill onto Illiostal, or someone that Illiostal is going to be at war with is trying to establish trade first.
Granny: Let’s go 200 yards and ask the King.
Kev: I’ve been sent here. If we go back, we lose any ability to make choices. Honestly, I don’t want to get involved with these people either.
Granny and Zantlin say that this is going to look badly from a political standpoint – if we get involved in the unrest, we have to take sides.
Kev agrees; we go to find the captain.
Captain: My king is in trouble. We can have another ship here in a day.
Granny looks at Sildanus, who hasn’t spoken.
Kev: Send your king my regrets – we cannot get into this matter.
Sildanus will accompany us back. Kev says it’s only until we get to our boat.
Granny says she wants Kev to go back and ask.
Will they wait for us? No! They have sent for another boat.
We disembark with Sildanus.
Granny: This is ridiculous, Sildanus. How does your king’s boat be attacked on a main waterway during a situation that is only diplomatic?
G: You have no idea what’s going on, or you’re lying.
Sildanus: Yes. (he grins.)
Yorn: Are you a moron, or a liar?
Granny will stay here with Yorn and Sildanus. Zantlin and Kev will teleport to Fairview, then to Illiostal.
Zantlin: We got time for a pint?
Kev: Yes! Might need one before we see the king.
They go to court and wait. Eventually a messenger comes and speaks, “The King still journeys”.
Kev: You have no idea where he is, do you?
Messenger: Someone else may.
K: Who’s in charge in the King’s absence?
Messenger: Baron Falbright has limited control.
K: Ask the Baron if I can get his council – I need his wisdom and insight.
Kev requests a moment with the Baron in private.
BF: What brings you back so quickly?
Kev: My friends are still in Blackmoor.
BF: As you should be.
Kev: I’ll be going back soon. Blackmoor’s a mess.
BF: We got that impression.
Kev: So you know I wasn’t born a nobleman, right?
Kev: Please forgive me any rough edges…did His Majesty send us to Blackmoor to fix their mess? HE told me to open trade.
BF: That is one thing we wanted.
Kev: They’re not stable and I’m about to get involved into their problems. IF I take one more step, we’re going to be involved. The King’s sister tried to murder *us* in one of their vaunted waterways, on the King’s boat. Around here, you swing from a rope for that.
BF: Yes…You fended off the attack?
Kev: The king is with his sister. If I go to see the King…that’s going to look bad. Did His Majesty send us to deal with that? We’re a bull in a china shop. Should we do bull stuff?
BF: The King is in Bridgeport. You need to speak to him.
Kev: Bridgeport – they love me there. To Bridgeport we go, I guess. Does he ask you to do things like this?
BF: We have dealt with political problems to our liking in the past. BTW you should clean up before coming to court.
Teleport there and back will be 450 gp each way. Kev goes to the Mage’s Guild and says he needs help.
K: I need to go to Bridgeport immediately.
He wouldn’t have to come back…Zantlin will need to rest and teleport tomorrow.
Kev’s not on their list of criminals (the No-Teleport list). Kev pays 500 gp and gets the mage…they teleport into the center of town, not far from the warehouse where the cult was.
Kev finds a guard and asks where the King is. He’s at the mayor’s house. They head there; the Royal Guards nod to him. Kev says he needs to speak to the King before morning – we’re having a bit of trouble with our mission to Blackmoor.
The king will see them immediately, it turns out – Kev’s not encouraged by this.
Kev: We have some sensitive information around our mission.
Mayor Candron: Pleased to meet you.
HRM: What brings you here? You should not be here.
Kev: We travelled quickly – Zantlin has long legs. We need your guidance. We are on our way to see the King of Blackmoor and his sister. She paid brigands to kill us an everyone onboard. The kingdom is unstable.
HRM: We know this.
Kev: If I proceed, Illiostal will be involved.
HRM: Please excuse us, Candron.
HRM: I would like to avoid becoming involved in their politics, but it may be necessary. I didn’t realize it had gone this far.
Kev: So far, we have saved some of their citizens and a boat – but we are not committed wholly. We also saved ourselves. But if I go to the King, and considering I found his sister’s name from the brigand…
HRM: It doesn’t make sense that she would attack. WE understand they have always been close.
Kev: I don’t know – this could be a trap. But my level of diplomatic ability involves steel. I can try to do more, but if we get involved…if you are ok with us being involved, I will go back.
HRM: There are certain gems, or materials, we have heard exist there that we need. I want to trade for this.
Kev: What is it?
HRM: It grants power to those who do not normally have it. Black, pink, orange – can be multicolored. It is a rare commodity that our mages have discovered.
Kev: I’ve seen this. It’s dangerous. Very dangerous – you don’t want to trade in it.
HRM: We may need to. War with our southern neighbors is inevitable if we don’t start trading.
Kev: I’ll try to keep it intact.
HRM: Stabilize the realm if you can…we need an ally on the opposite side of our enemies, especially one who can use Wild Magic.
Zantlin: Not to be ungrateful, but you have a lot of information that would have been nice to know before we went there.
HRM: Not all of our intelligence is for you to know.
Kev: Thank you, your Majesty. We will depart in the morning.
HRM: I will be at the Duke’s residence in the morning.
Kev: If it is alright with you, we will leave quietly. The Duke doesn’t like me.
HRM: He speaks of you highly.
Kev: That is good to hear, but it is best to let old wounds heal. We’ll be at an Inn on the south side for the night. Thank you, Your Majesty.
HRM: You are welcome. You are one of the few I trust to handle this. One more thing – there maybe other agents, even here, that covet this substance.
As they leave, sense motive…Kev 8, Zantlin 32. Zantlin feels like the King is genuinely concerned for all of us.
Z: I can’t always head him, but that felt like a final goodbye.
Kev: No, he’s fine. Just a little formal.
Kev and Zantlin stay the night.
Back in Blackmoor…
We are in a marshy area. Granny creates a Secure Shelter. After a few hours, Will Save for Granny – she feels a pull from her pack. The Kevonium is trying to draw here towards something around here. She did make her save, though. It’s probably more Kevonium, and within a quarter mile of here.
Sildanus is meditating.
Granny figures the pull isn’t for Blackmoor gems, but Kevonium. She knows this area of the world has the look of incompleteness…and that Kevonium was used to create the world.
Granny will try to get some information out of Sildanus about what’s going on in this country.
Sildanus: There have been heated words of late between the king and his sister. Two weeks ago, she stormed out of the palace which is quite unusual. We fear interference from the thralls of Coot.
G: We heard of the Egg of Coot and some of your deities, and your ignorance of our gods.
S: We once worshipped Ulyiad, until the Egg of Coot.
Yorn prepares to chime in until Granny shushes him.
Sildanus explains the story of the Egg. Anyone who tries to defeat it, even armies, those that return have no memories of being on the attack. No one knows if the Egg is a person or what, but many people still worship it.
Those who do not follow the religion know that it’s goal is to control everything in the realm. Its one true trait is the lust for power.
G: Does it take the form of a nation with a boundary?
S: Most citizens worship the Egg. Most of the nobles have not come under its influence.
Yorn: Great…warring national religions.
G: So the nobles are just puppets?
S: If the king falls to the influence of the Coot, we will lose everything.
G: So this results between the King and his sister feuding?
S: We didn’t know of this.
G: What is the chance that she is under the control of the cult?
S: With this attack, very likely. But she did not want the king to waste more troops against the Egg. She wanted to attack the thralls of the Egg. Those who are completely under its mental control.
Yorn: It’s easy to get the weak-minded to believe in a cult.
G: Normally by making some kind of promise, yes. What have they promised?
Granny, diplomacy 3. Sense Motive 22 – Sildanus is unwilling or unable to speak of the thralls…or say much more about the Egg.
Granny fumes and attempts to Intimidate him.
G: No doubt we’ll be involved in a way that could benefit you, but your silence doesn’t serve you well. I demand that you tell me more!
Yorn: If we have to start breaking the heads of cultists, I can get behind this!
Sildanus, cowering: The Egg devours magic. It has slowly moved across our kingdom with its followers, chewing up our gems. It seems to feed off the power you carry, which is why you could not roam free.
Robin: What’s he talking about?
Yorn: I have no idea.
G: That is important to know.
S: We have not yet found a way to defeat this creature.
G: I hope Kev wishes us to help you defeat this.
S: If our king wishes it.
G: I don’t know what you expect from your king.
G: You waste time arguing about a problem you don’t have any idea to defeat, while your country falls apart.
We spend the night on watch in the secure shelter.
In the middle of the night, someone knocks on Kev’s door. He answers it wearing his skivvies and holding a sword.
Guy: Sir Pendledash, we have a situation. Do you have a healer? The King’s been attacked!
Kev sends Zantlin and they run to the King…he’s wearing pants and carrying a sword, and that’s it.
The Inn where the King was staying at is pandemonium. The non-magical healer seems lost. The King is in bad shape…Zantlin casts Heal.
The King suddenly looks much, much better and wakes up.
Z: Feeling better?
HRM: Much. How did this happen?
Kev asks for the captain of the guard, right now. The guy is here.
The captain looks confused and lost – he says they heard a door slam, and found the king unconscious.
The king had been stabbed with a dagger.
Kev: How did a man with a dagger get into the King’s room?
C: There were men in the hallway and outside the building.
The guards at the door don’t remember anyone, or the door closing. The guards below heard a door slam.
Kev evacuates the King, then tears the room apart. He finds a note pinned to the bed, covered in blood.
Note: Your king will no longer interfere in our affairs. Signed, LW.
No one knows who LW is.
He continues to tear the room apart with 13 and 18. Looks like they came through the window and came out the door. The guards swear no one came out.
Zantlin looks at the Tracks – 28 survival. Fine footprints of bare feet go out the door, then out a window in the hallway. They track the prints in the dirt out into the woods.
Zantlin follows…near dawn, he finds a campsite. The fire is burned out, and the remnants of a quick shelter are still here. The footprints looks surprisingly like those hobgoblin-looking dudes from before.
Zantlin heads back and asks what’s going on – he didn’t catch the assassin. The king has no idea who LW is.
Scott – Lady Walcraft?
When Zantlin gets back, he tells Kev and the King that he couldn’t tell what footprints were. But, there was only one person who left the tracks. They led to an abandoned encampment.
Zantlin, to Kev: Why don’t we let the king have his rest?
Kev tells the Captain of the Guard to stay here while they speak.
Once alone, Zantlin: Those footprints were the hobgoblin-looking things. Same kind of thing.
K: Can they teleport? Do we know what they are?
Z: Well, some of them can cast. Granny said Confusion.
K: Something’s not right.
Z: I think “LW” is the other kingdom.
K: I don’t know that the King’s sister is involved, then. I think we should tell the King of Illiostal.
Z: We don’t have a lot of information. We haven’t seen those creatures before, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get here. Might be a different band, or mercenaries, etc.
K: Should we find the Duke and threaten him? Tell him if the King’s dead when I get back, I’ll come kill him?
Z: Not sure that’s good diplomacy…
K: We don’t like each other anyway.
Z: As your temporary advisor, I’d like to say that sounds like a bad idea.
They talk to the king, who says he’s properly protected. Kev recommends getting a priest on hand.
K: Would you like me to return to Blackmoor, or bring everyone back here?
HRM: The events in Blackmoor are more important.
K: If you die, what we do means nothing.
HRM: My people here can protect me.
K: We will depart forthwith.
Kev glares at the Captain of the Guard.
Kev’s Sense Motive with the King – 22. Something about the King’s current behavior doesn’t seem quite right. Kev asks Zantlin…Zantlin didn’t notice anything.
On their way back, Zantlin grabs a small barrel of ale.
They meet the rest of us and say that we’re not heading back. Kev tells Sildanus to head outside, and brooks no argument. Sildanus gives us a moment.
Kev says that war with the Southern nation is imminent, and he needs Blackmoor on his side. And Blackmoor has Kevonium. He wants it, and the court wizards want it too.
G: That would be bad. So we’re to become allies?
K: Yes, I guess. But I think it’s a bad idea.
Zantlin also mentions that someone stabbed the King.
Granny says she learned that the Egg of Coot is some kind of religion. It somehow provides control over those in its reach. Much of the peasantry of Blackmoor believes in following the Egg; the nobility largely does not. The King doesn’t have much power, mostly because of the Egg.
Kev: We need to secure this King.
G: With the cult, the King’s still a problem.
Kev: I don’t like our king asking for Kevonium. We could turn this country into a Civil War and tell our king he can’t get his stuff.
The Egg is aware of Kevonium and its dangers. It also wants to consume it.
Kev: You’re carrying bait for the Egg? Good. It will come to us, and we’ll kill it.
G: Hopefully it’s that simple.
Kev: Let’s find the king and check up on him. Hopefully he’s not dead yet. Our King is acting weird too, because I’d have liked to tear Bridgeport apart and he said we didn’t need to.
G: The Egg can create thralls under its full control. I’ve offered to help Sildanus dissect a thrall if needed to find out what the nature of the control is.
Kev heads outside to apologize to Sildanus then says we’re following after the King. New orders.
Granny: Wehave a combined goal – our king wants to have good relations with your King. If that means fighting some enemies, maybe. Mostly it means stabilizing Blackmoor.
Sildanus has something to do with Granny. He says there is word of some gems in this area that he must go look for.
Yorn: I don’t care where you’re going, but I’m coming with if she wants to leave our sight.
We are actually all going to come with. None of us are very polite. He leads us in a direction that Granny sensed as the location of Kevonium. She tells Zantlin.
Z: If he tries to pick it up, what will you do? I don’t want you to have it either, but we need to stop people from finding it.
G: There’s more of it down here, based on my research. If we need to stop him from finding it, let Kev know – this may end poorly for our relations.
Kev tries to distract Sildanus while Granny and Kev speak. He asks about finding mages, rituals, whelping of the locals, etc. Sildanus looks angrily at Granny.
As we approach the Kevonium, Granny makes a will save 29.
Granny hits us with Message. “We must stop Sildanus from getting the Kevonium.”
Robin: He seems to know what it is…does he have it?
Kev: We don’t have any right to keep him from it, and they’ve already got it. Other people have it…
Granny: You’d let them have access to stuff that can end the world?
Kev: We are supposed to get it for our King. And I don’t know how to stop this guy without stabbing him.
Granny isn’t worried about details like that. She wants it more…she knows where it is, and she may be able to teleport there as if Viewed Once.
Yorn, your hand.
She teleports with Yorn to get to the stuff first. The teleport is successful.
We’re on a stone ledge at the edge of a lake. The Kevonium/Zantlantium is 15’ below us.
We are in a different area…we couldn’t see the lake from where we were. It’s probably between half a mile and a mile from where we were.
Looking around, Granny sees that the Kevonium is probably under the water…might be a cave entrance there. Otherwise this will require digging.
Granny casts Waterbreathing, and we dive in. Search 22, 16 – Yorn finds a crack under the water that looks just wide enough for a person to get under the shelf of rock. Yorn says he’ll swim up; Granny goes first. The crack isn’t very deep; there is a cave a few feet in. The two of them head inside. Yorn can’t pass inside…something’s holding him out. Yorn can’t hack his way in through the barrier, so he starts to break the stone.
Yorn: Wait up, Granny!
Granny: I’m just looking.
She finds a pillar of rock ending in a cone. There is a slab of Kevonium on top of this as if a tabletop. It’s 30-40 lbs. This was clearly set here; it is not a natural formation. She tries to mold it into a smaller, more stowable package and can do so.
Yorn has smashed out nearly a foot of rock by the time Granny comes back.
Yorn: What’s up there?
Granny: I got the Kevonium. Let’s go.
Y: How much?
Granny: More than I expected.
Yorn: How did you know this was here, anyway?
G: My own connection with the Kevonium told me.
Granny suspects this cave to be dwarven work but she doesn’t recognize whose. This underwater passage seems to be the only way in.
Yorn and Granny talk about where to ditch the Kevonium…she pretty much says bugger all to the orders of our King. Yorn’s not ready to leave her alone and goes with.
Back to the rest of the party…they saw Yorn and Granny disappear. Sildanus is surprised and mad.
S: Where did they go?
Z: This isn’t good.
R: Did Granny get Egg-controlled?
Kev: Ah, uh, she does that when she has a really urgent call of nature.
S: You don’t need a teleport for that.
K: She’s got a really shy bladder. Why don’t we continue to look for your rocks.
S: That’s important, but she can’t be loose within our kingdom.
Z: We don’t know where she went either.
K: Let’s continue. We’ll just look for them as we walk.
Kev tells Zantlin and Robin to go find Granny. He’ll protect Sildanus.
After a few rounds, Sildanus says, “My stuff is gone.”
When it becomes gone, Kev asks how he knows. What does it look like?
SIldanus explains that it can be many colors, but this isn’t for him to know. Sildanus is getting all cagey again.
Kev accuses him of not knowing what he’s looking for at all.
Suddenly, Kev gets a sending –
Kevonium recovered. Teleported elven village. It’s safe from Sildanus. Join you later.
Kev replies, “Get your bitch ass back here with that Kevonium right now! What are you doing?”
She actually has no intention of coming back. Granny says we should go get lunch.
Sildanus says that he doesn’t want to tell Kev how he knows the stuff is missing…as a non-magic-user, he’s not allowed to know.
Zantlin: I’m getting tired of your act.
Sildanus: Your companion isn’t back. If she doesn’t come back soon, we’ll have to mark her as a fugitive of the kingdom. You gentlemen have been gracious; I will give her until we reach Newgate. She has teleported.
Kev: She can’t have gone that far.
Granny casts Non-detection on both her and Yorn.
K: She can’t be in your country, right?
S: She’s a danger here, and she has stolen our property.
K: You mean the stuff you can’t tell me about?
S: Until we meet with the King, I can’t tell you.
Z: I’m going back to the river.
They get back to the river and see their boat coming. Zantlin DD’s them onto the boat to save time mooring, etc. Some of the passengers recognize Sildanus and think he was the one who DD’d.
Kev: What is your position in the city?
S: We work with the tradesmen.
K: I have my own county. It might be nice to have a guy like you on staff.
S: I can make a recommendation…
K: I’d like you. I can guarantee a better offer.
Sense Motive on Sildanus…there’s no way Kev can match the prestige that being in the cabal provides.
Kev: Can foreigners join the Cabal?
S: After testing…but I don’t think you could.
K: I’m just asking for a friend. Good to know you’re open and accepting.
It’s another 3 hours to Newgate. Sildanus tries to escape Kev without success.
Back at the Elven village…we have been non-detected. Yorn and Granny talk…he needs to know where to go…he will protect her for the night. In the morning she’ll cast spells including a Sending to find Kev. Yorn will head to help them later,
Robin: Am I the only one worried that Granny might be in trouble?
Kev: She DEFINITELY is in trouble.
They track through Newgate. Kev pays attention to the route including good buildings to set on fire to distract people during his escape.
Going through town they see a lot of non-humans…short folks that don’t look like dwarves. There are Halflings which we recognize from Blackmoor. Eventually they get to a mansion at the center of town, the home of the sister of the king. Sildanus says they are to meet the king immediately.
They greet Sildanus, who says he’s here to see the king.
Servant: The king is ill!
Sildanus rushes them inside and they all go.
The king is in bed, thrashing and frothing. Their healers can find no cure…he may be poisoned.
Kev: I had a cousin looked just like that. It was rabies.
Zantlin says it’s not poison.
Sildanus’s face blanches when he notices something…”That looks to be the influence of the Egg.”
Kev: Should we get him to the temple of Ulyiad? Or Arianna? She can make omelets.
Zantlin figures the King’s been Cursed. He casts Remove Curse…the king pulls a crystal from his collar. Zantlin immediately smashes it into dust as the King thanks him.
Z: Thank Arianna.
K: How could you do that when my Bishop was unable to help me for two days?
Z: The power of Arianna is strong in me.
Robin: Does the Bishop worship the Egg?
K: What color are his eyes?
King: He is not a thrall. They become unwilling slaves to the Egg without minds of their own.
King: I owe you much – what can I do to thank you?
K: I am Kev Pendledash, Ambassador from Illiostal.
King: Well met! I’m surprised since our Ambassador had not returned.
K: You know Robin and Zantlin Kingsaver.
Z: Grumble, grumble.
K: We would like to open discussions between nations, but we would be happy to wait for you to recover.
King: I feel fine but would prefer to get dressed.
Kev: Tomorrow morning?
King: This afternoon, for a late lunch.
Kev: Very well. I would also like to thank you for your servant Sildanus’s patience in answering my questions.
King: I must get dressed and investigate some things on my own. We will meet for a late lunch. You can meet my sister then.
The king doesn’t suspect his sister at all.
Sildanus says that he must speak to the king about Gertrude’s fate.
