We moved through the dungeon and had a serious religious difference with Vongruss, but let him live for now. We did have a big blow-out with him so the for now part is a very real possibility. Then we worked down and found the being who claims himself to be the Egg of Coot..right now he's an enormous dragon and we are going to have problems with this.
April 2, 2017
½ PEP for everyone
We are about to have a “religious discussion”.
Zantlin wants to make sure the idol doesn’t power the Egg, and says he’s not going to rest with the dwarves. Thanatos is evil so he doesn’t trust his followers, and he doesn’t want the help of those who would follow an evil god.
Kev: Will you let them show us where to go?
Zantlin doesn’t trust them, although they’re also opposing the Egg.
He says he can send people back here to retrieve us at the appropriate time.
We decide we’ll wall off an area and go with the dwarves. Dude puts the idol back in its alcove; Yorn prays to Ulyiad to bless this room and keep it safe from the evil influence.
Spot checks as we talk to Vongruss – best is 32. 14 or better notice an outline of a diseased hand holding the moon traced into Vongruss’s armor that act as the holy symbol of Thanatos.
They take us to the intersection of SL1, SL1A, 2F, and 2D. They camp near here. We’ll need to meet up here.
They bring us into a room nearby – it looks like an armory. A side chamber has beds and a dresser – it’s his chambers. We can close and lock the door. They will be in some rooms across.
Granny uses a Secure Shelter inside this room. We will shack up and rest for 14 hours.
Healing and Identification while we wait.

Studded leather *359 - +3
Blackmoor gems – do not need to identify them.
Ring of sustenance – Kev
Wand of suggestion – Granny (29 charges)
We don’t do much with the loot, but Granny does some alchemy.
While resting, Granny and Zantlin chat. She’s got something to show him.
G: I’ve been working on a scroll for black tentacles. I have learned something you may need to know – my research into the Zantlantium has opened my eyes to that gods perceive time differently than we do. As immortals and masters of creation, they can cause a forest to grow from nothing without any time. They can perceive a future with the forest fully grown and imagine it now…they pull it back through time. This may be difficult to explain, but I completed this scroll in minutes because I was able to perceive its future state. This should have taken hours, but…
G: I’m talking to Zantlin, what do you want?
K: The room is 20’ across and I am trying not to listen to this.
She shows Zantlin as she creates a scroll in moments.
G: Time is not linear and I’m starting to understand it!
Zantlin watches Granny write out a scroll the old fashioned way. She sees the scroll just as it finishes, but somehow it’s not going as fast as it was.
Z: You sure you feeling ok?
G: I know why it’s not working – don’t watch, don’t listen!
She tries when no one’s watching and it works.
Yorn: She just pulled it out of her pocket. I’ve seen street performers do that. Kev, hand me that bottle.
Granny is talking some pretty advanced stuff, talking about creation, the power of the gods, timelines, etc. She hasn’t tried other things.
She’s creating stuff she could have created, just faster. Apparently the Kevonium/Zantlantium is doing something.
At any rate, she’s very excited and realizing things about the world itself.
Z: Where is this power coming from? You don’t have followers, so even to use a mere drop of deific power – where is it coming from?
G: Must it require followers?
As Zantlin understands it, even gods without followers are still gods – just with a reduced power.
Z: are you using the Zantlantium or stealing from your goddess?
G: I don’t know. She did encourage me.
Granny didn’t use the Zantlantium to make these scrolls, just her knowledge. This burst of understanding led her to believe she might have a connection to the ZTL, but maybe not.
Z: You spent enough time to learn and control it. Is that someone anyone could do, or just special people.
G: I don’t think I was special. So yes, I believe anyone who could withstand its influence on the world could use it. Many have been overcome, like my half-sister. For all we know, the Egg has also been overcome. OR has he mastered it?
Z: My information about the Egg says the cult is hundreds of years old. If it’s the same person, he’s learned much you might not have know,
G: Which is why I’m concerned this is a contest to amuse him.
Z: If he’s a semi-god, we can do little to him.
G: That’s why I think this is dangerous, and I don’t want anyone else killed. We need to work together.
Z: We need to learn more. If your abilities come from the Zantlantium, could you craft some kind of protection to keep the Egg from stealing your powers? Or protect the rest of us from being erased because that’s how he sees it working?
G: That may be necessary. If he truly has deific power, I can’t do much.
Z: I doubt it. He’s been using his followers so he may not be omnipotent. I wish I had time to do my own research.
Y: Should you start working on those amulets so we have them when we need them? Is that how it works?
Granny thinks about trying to imagine herself rested but doesn’t want to take the chance.
Z: I know you’re nervous, but anything more you can learn tonight might be valuable.
Y: Well, it’s like what Kev said…we could imagine ourselves woken up without a hangover, then use the time to drink more.
Granny decides to go to bed, then imagines herself rested and woken…none of us watch.
Does she find herself rested? Int roll 27, Fort 26, Will 37 saves and K arcane 40 = yes, she is rested in a few minutes.
G: Huh. I find myself rested and ready to prepare spells.
Suddenly she has a vague glimpse of 8 hours from now where there are people running and screaming.
In hour 6, Sir Kev is on watch. Granny is awake as well and studying.
Listen 24, 25 – both of them hear shouting and the noise of battle.
“Get that thing away—ah!”
Kev wakes us up and we dash out, poorly armored. Kev’s the first one out the door…Yorn doesn’t have his boots, armor, or hat on.
Kev opens the door and finds a beastman with a dwarf grappled. He attacks the beastman and hits for 18.
Beastman 1…dwarf 2 runs. Beastman 1 leaves…AOO’s – Kev hits for 12, Yorn hits for 46. The Beastman runs with the dwarf in his mouth. Granny looks through the armory and sees beastman 2 grappling a dwarf in the next room – dwarf appears unconscious.
Granny tries to break the gem in its head with a rod of negation. She hits and dispels it! The effect will be suppressed for d4 rounds.
Robin shoots Beastman 2 for 18 points. Yorn Charges Beastman 2 and hits for 34. We all spot Beastman 2 stop attacking dwarf 5 (the Kevonium wasn’t injected) and tosses the body. It hits 4, knocking him over. Then it tries to grapple Yorn and fails.
Vongruss says the other beastman went north. Then he moves to Beastman 2 and casts, “Inflict Critical Wounds”. Granny noticed; Zantlin did not. Zantlin moves up.
Kev runs up and attacks…hit for 14. Granny hits with MM for 19 points. Robin lets loose a flurry of arrows and hits for 14.
Yorn finishes it off and says, “We need to look for the other one!”
Vongruss: We never catch them! (then takes off anyway). 4 runs away.
Kev heads back into our room. “The other one’s gone.”
G: We’ll do what we can, but let’s not get completely separated, Yorn.
Yorn runs north of V and spots nothing.
Y: I don’t see anything yet – and I’m not going past the meeting room.
Out of combat – Yorn doesn’t see anything.
G: I thought this was a safe place, Vongruss.
V: They hadn’t come here before. They found us.
Y: How many people were infected?
One guy was killed and one guy dragged off…two more beastmen dragged away dwarves.
G: We know how far to go – were you going to guide us there?
V: To what is rumored…
Z: Rumors? Thanks for being worthless.
V: No one has returned or remembers….
G: How about you draw a map for us, then you and your people leave. Clearly we can’t guarantee your safety, and we can’t stand guard for the next time one comes.
V: Next time it may come for you.
Y: We’ll be fine then.
Z: Next time, you can consider returning to Arianna.
G: That ok? Draw your picture right here and go.
Best sense motive is 26. He gives us a rough diagram.
G: Now I suggest you flee somewhere safe.
V: WE’re not leaving our home.
G: We need to rest. Now get away from us.
He leaves and slams the door behind him.
Yorn: You need the gem in that thing’s head?
Granny checks the beastman and says it’s regenerating. Yorn is about to hammer it when she tells him no. Then Detect Magic, and carefully remove the kevonium stuff…detect magic. Granny and Zantlin will try to keep this thing unconscious and remove the Kevonium, but not kill it. Zantlin’s able to do this.
No problem – fist-sized chunk.
#5 is dead in here…somehow he died during the injection. Is there a scar on its head? Hole, but no scar. We return to the shelter but first, Yorn spots the door to the south – Vongruss is chasing a dwarf and calling this guy a coward.
Dwarf 7 runs out with Vongruss at his heels. Vongruss is casting…
Yorn steps and asks, “What are you running from? I’ll kill it!”
V: Stay out of it. He’s my man.
Spellcraft 51, 24 – He’s casting Bestow Curse!
Yorn reaches around the corner and punches Vongruss in the face.
Y: There’s a lot of awful shit down here…let’s talk about this.
Robin re-gathers his bow but holds…because that does lethal damage.
R, to Z: This isn’t an excuse to kill him yet.
Z: Don’t tell me my business!
Zantlin moves out and asks, “Are you requesting Sanctuary from a faithful of Arianna?”
7 glares at him.
Z: See, I didn’t just come out swinging…
7 stops and says, “I’ll show you what I think of Arianna!”
He attacks Zantlin with his warhammer and crits for 22. Then he turns to Vongruss and says, “Fine!”
Yorn hits for 9 non-lethal on the AOO. Zantlin also hit the guy as he moves into the room. Vongruss lets him by.
Granny’s up. “What the hell’s going on here!”
V hasn’t finished his curse yet. Granny blinks.
Y: We’re continuing our religious debate.
G: You want him dealt with, Zantlin?
Z: If they’re leaving, let them go.
G: Explain yourself, Vongruss!
Vongruss ignores Granny, steps down to 7, and touches him…the curse goes off. Granny knows he just took some strength.
V: Now try to outrun those beastmen, you coward!
Yorn berates Vongruss for being a miserable leader. Vongruss claims that you need to cause a little bit of pain to keep your men in line. We let them go, and both sides tell the other to stay out of the other’s ways.
We discuss whether or not to kill the dwarves on sight. Zantlin says they’re enemies.
Z: He hit me with a war hammer.
K: Then why is he alive? I’m not asking you to help them, just don’t screw up someone with a common enemy.
K: Once the Egg is gone, I don’t care. For now, we have something to do.
Z: Right. Defeat the Coot, then raze the complex.
We finish our sleeps and memorizes, and prepare to head out.
12: muffled noise to the south
Something is rolling around and banging into stuff. Something’s flopping around in there.
Yorn opens the door to look as the rest of the group votes to leave. He sees a strange-looking creature that may once have been a dwarf – it’s all misshapen now.
Yorn: Granny, you gotta look at this.
K Planes – 31. Looks like a chaos beast was here. This one is close to becoming a chaos beast itself.
Yorn and Kev dispatch it. Which dwarf was this? We search 19 – it looks like the dwarf that was cursed. No signs of anyone else.
We quickly search the room (a sleeping chamber) and find :
We secure the door and head back to our alcove.
We follow Vongruss’s map, which appears to bring us safely down to the bottom. We head down a steep stairs to some metal doors. The runes on this door do not mark it…the inscription was chiseled out long ago.
Yorn opens the door and it goes down to another room with marked doors. SL2A, SL1 (partially damaged), SL2B. SL1 seems wrong…because we saw one above as well. Someone’s been relabeling, or the passages are all wacky.
We pass through 2B – beyond (spot 32) notice odd marks on the floor in the center of this hallway.
Yorn and Robin say something about the gasholes or something…Granny sends off an earth elemental who triggers a Power Word Stun. Yorn and Kev are unaffected; the rest of the party suffers. Three opponents come forward.
Three dwarves with blue eyes: “We will not allow unbelievers…”
Kev: That’s ok, we believe!
Kev’s up: Unbelievers are totally allowed down here!
Kev activates blink and runs up to the dwarves and more runes go off. Blind! 101-200 HP are affected…which gets the whole party. (1d4 rds)
Wait, if the trap is only one creature then none of us are stunned.
Granny looks now and tells us, “It’s stun, blind, stun, blind! Don’t charge through!”
K: I’ll jump over.
G: It will still go off. I’ll put you over there.
Z: Let Robin handle it!
Z: We’re here to talk to the Coot. Make way.
Them: Of course you are. Not before you’re readied.
Z: Ready you upside the head….
Robin starts shooting and crits one dwarf…
Granny tells the elemental to Earthglide over to the dwarves, and it sinks into the ground. Then she casts Dimension Step on all of us.
The dwarves start pounding on the earth elemental .
L steps around the corner and blasts his men and the elemental with fire pouring out of his fingertips. He clearly didn’t care that he was burning his allies.
Zantlin asks the elemental to let him pass, then delays. Robin delays. Yorn delays.
Granny tells her elemental to move, then attack the spellcaster. The AOO’s hit it…and it beats on L for a miss. Then she casts Glitterdust and blinds 1 and 2. Kev moves in and hits 2 for 20. Yorn kills 2 but misses 1. Zantlin dashes in, 3 misses the AOO, and Zantlin beats L for 16.
1 flails around harmlessly, but then his eyes go dark and he crumples to the floor, dead. We’ve seen this before.
L casts defensively and avoids AOO’s…”I’ll show you what we do to unbelievers!” Spellcraft 35 = wall of fire.
He catches himself. “No one gets through! Muhahah!”
Zantlin ignores the damage. The rest of us in the hallway are now in fire.
Robin backs up and waits for the fire to go away.
Granny is up; she can’t see through the flames.
Us: Tell that elemental to move his ass!
Kev steps into 1’s square, misses, steps, misses, and stops.
Yorn kills 3 and L, then backs out.
We wait for the fire to go out, then Yorn sets off a path through the traps for Granny and Robin.
We check the bodies.
*375 – 3 sets of breastplate
*376 – 3 warhammers
*377 – ring (from L)
* 378 – oddly crafted staff with areas of darkness twisted within it – also seems very old.
We also collect the Zantlantium.
We move through door 2B and find a room with more labels – SL3, SL3A, SL3B, and a hatch in the door SL3C.
Labels in the room look original. We head west (for SL3). The stairs heading down are collapsed – the roof is collapsed in. Granny summons an earth elemental to check it out past the rubble. The whole passage is collapsed.
The elemental tries to go through the floor, but reports that there is no stone. There’s a big pillar holding the room up, but lots of open area. Looks like the floor will descend if you push a button near the 3A door.
Listening while we move…we hear the sounds of machinery below. Holding the button activates a full descent. After a button, we stop. Zantlin heals Kev and Yorn.
The elevator stops and clicks into place. We see a room in front of us with five groups of something shiny and spider-like…on the far side is a huge 20’ door.
Steve: These are swarms? Thanks, Paul!
They are currently not moving. Three other doors here aren’t moving.
Zantlin and Granny look – these are something mechanical. Magic auras – conjuration and whatever these things are, they contain fire elementals. No auras in the hallway indicating an alarm.
Granny tells us not to go in there yet…she’s never seen anything like these. They are made of iron, lead, and strange alloys.
The door is marked “Welcome Home” in fresh markings. The others are SL3D, SL4, SL4A.
Two gnomes come around the corner with blue eyes.
Gnomes: My master has been expecting you. If you come quietly, this will be easier for you.
We don’t stop them.
We aren’t sure if we can just walk across…Before we move, listen 23 –two more gnomes become visible in here.
G3, G4 – two more gnomes came into our room invisibly and invite us to follow them.
Y: Who is your master?
They look at Yorn funny and Kev asks him if he’s stupid. We walk through the room and see that the beasts are huge stacks of mechanical spiders, just waiting to move.
Yorn rides caboose until we pass through the room. The gnomes bow at the door and tell us, “Bow to your new master.”
They start chanting to the ancient one. “Come to us!” After a bit, the big mechanical door rises.
Inside we see a dragon head covered in shimmery iridescence about 20’ beyond the door.
In a 100’ square room is what appears to be a silver dragon. Will saves! We don’t get our 40…except Kev who is immune
Those of us who are panicked run screaming.
Kev: So you’re the Egg of Coot?
Dragon: I’d like to be.
K: When I pictured the Egg, you’re not what I had in mind. Well done.
D: By the way, I love that part.
Yorn gets to SL4 first and opens it.
K: So you been doing this for a couple hundred years?
D: Give or take a few centuries, yes. Humans are easy to manipulate.
K: Aren’t you trapped down here? Can’t be.
D: Of course not. You need some place for visitors to stop in.
K: So what do you need to not be the Egg of Coot anymore?
D: Oh, I’m not stopping. There’s nothing you could offer me. I’m looking for chaos.
Scott: Sorry to disrupt your moment here.
When Yorn passes the threshold into SL4, it starts to descend…very quickly.
Kev notices the dragon’s scales are sort of crystalline and hypnotic.
K: What kind of dragon are you?
D: I’m not a real dragon, but I do like this form. Besides, in my true form everyone would be scared.
D: This does impress my subjects.
Granny stops but does try to leap the pit. She begins to fall, Feather Fall goes off, and her Hamster Ball also kicks in. She hovers in mid air.
D: You’ll all make nice thralls, but I’m mostly interested in making your wizard my partner in this venture.
K: Granny? Nah, you can’t have her.
D: I’ll have Granny.
K: Nah, you won’t.
End of round 2, Yorn’s down 20’. This thing is going down 10’/round. Zantlin and Robin are at the base of the stairs. We all have our wits about us.
Zantlin and Robin see water lapping at the bottom of the stairs..and it’s rising. They went down about 50’.
Y: That dragon wasn’t so scary.
D: I’m afraid I will have to be a little firm about this.
K: You sure?
D: You will all be treasured within my staff. You will be delightful additions.
K: Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Kev draws the Axiomatic Long sword and attacks. Init?
Yorn teleports back to where he was and picks up his sword.
Kev is 55’ from the dragon form (30’ x 30’). He charges and attempts to batter the dragon on the nose…44 to hit? Yes! (looks like it’s around 41 without dex). 19 + 7.
Dragon: Ooh! Not bad…
K: Still time to surrender!
Zantlin starts to run back in shame for being afraid of such a silly creature. Robin also heads back.
Around Zantlin and Robin’s turn, the spider critters start to activate. Robin pulls out his sword for now.
Spider swarm 1 activates; so do 3 and 4.
Granny is not panicked and in her ball. Granny pulls out a scroll of teleport and dismisses the ball…she lands in a heap at the bottom.
Aaron: Now have your hip make a saving throw.
The dragon reaches out and attempts to grapple Kev…and hits. Grapple 89 vs whatever Kev rolls…and grabs him.
D: That was almost funny. Let’s wait for the others to get here.
For the night, good RP. Close to killing the last remnants of an evil church…350 XP.
½ PEP to Scott for double checking math and screwing up the fire.
½ PEP to Paul for ideas about time
½ PEP to Kevin for some humor in the background
½ PEP to Aaron for good RP, ½ PEP for insisting that he wasn’t going to treat with Evil
½ PEP to Steve for foolishness in running up to the dragon.
½ PEP for end of night to all, plus 15 x level
Kevin: ½ to Aaron and Paul for being pricks to the evil dwarves
Aaron: ½ to Kevin, ½ to Paul by process of elimination because Scott and Steve were irritating
Steve: ½ to Aaron and ½ to Paul for RP / douchepickelry
Paul: ½ to Aaron for RP, ½ to Steve for being the only idiot not to run from the dragon
Scott: ½ to Aaron and Paul for RP, even though I despise timey-wimey stuff.
We will finish next week with or without a party.
