We found nothing of note in the Egg cult camp and rejoined the party. Kev and Zantlin had dinner with the Lady Welcraft, and rebuffed her invitation to see the dwarves. Yorn and Robin hung out with a servant, and later on got roaring drunk with Zantlin and said servant...only to discover he had been poisoned. We checked the kitchen for poison ale and heard something below, which wasn't the cellar but a dungeon. We broke in only to be interrupted by the Lady and her guards. As we started to find prisoners "The King" showed up and began flinging spells. Then we found the real king and spirited him away.
We ended the night in Blackmoor, and Granny will meet up with us shortly.
February 26, 2017
Party is currently divided *worse*. Granny is to the north. Kev and Zantlin are in a mansion. Yorn and Robin are in a cave where they finished a fight.
Yorn tells Robin that he needs to start begging for forgiveness for being so weak-willed as to nearly be forcibly converted to another religion due to his lack of faith – right now. Robin loots.
8 sets of studded leather (don’t take)
8 katanas (non-MW) – don’t take
4 gold, 30 CP.
The other creature doesn’t have anything on it, but does have a mouth-like thing.
Yorn searches the room (9) and the brazier (20) – there is something eerie about the brazier. There is no coal, but it stays hot all the time. There is some dark, sticky substance (kind of brownish) on the sides. Looks like dried blood. Yorn puts on his ring of Fire Resistance and digs around…no heat. He picks up a coal and it continues to glow. He scoops all the fire out and puts it in a bag.
Robin looks around – he finds some bone fragments in the fire, but we can’t identify them.
Yorn opens up the blob-like creature and finds nothing. Its innards look like no innards Yorn has seen before.
They head back to the road; the guy out there is dead. Search 21 – he’s got similar weapons and armor, but carries 2 gp – and around his neck, on a metal chain, is a stone disc with some strange symbols. Yorn recognizes the symbol around town; this has something to do with the Egg of Coot.
They decide to head back to the mansion to warn the others about the cultists and the monsters and stuff. The return trip is uneventful.
Meanwhile, Lady Walcrest comes back to Kev to offer her invitation to dine with them. He accepts and will join her and her brother at 7:30. She offers him a chance to use the hot spring baths out back. He accepts that.
Kev finds Zantlin, mentions the bath, and heads to dinner. He chats with a servant about etiquette and how much armament you’re allowed to dine with. The servant says that it’s not unheard of to be armed, so Kev will bring his adamantine dagger with him.
Kev has three servants to help him with his bathing.
K: In my kingdom it’s not appropriate for young ladies to attend men.
3 young ladies: It is appropriate here…and lest you be mistaken, we are just here to help you bathe.
They mention there are some eunuchs available if he needs…Kev acquiesces and tells Zantlin they’re using magic next time.
Kev dresses without his armor or weaponry. As he finishes up at the bath, Robin and Yorn come back and explain what happened – mind control, not getting struck by lightning, Yorn getting bitten, and the symbol for the Egg of Coot cult.
Kev says he’ll deal with the king, and Robin and Yorn should clean up and stay out of trouble.
Granny was going to wait until morning before casting message.
Back at the room, the servants bring us food. Yorn tells the servant they should get drunk later since they’re just the little people to be seen and not heard. The servant has to put the king to bed.
In the dining hall, Lady Welcrest greets Kev. He mentions that his friends were waylaid.
LW: I apologize; my brother was delayed and won’t be here until morning. Is that ok?
Sense motives: 21 and 21. She’s not lying…
They dine on venison. Detect Poison: none!
She says they can enjoy the meal and revisit her offer.
Kev: We can enjoy the meal, but the offer isn’t acceptable. We can discuss but my answer will remain the same, no.
Seven courses…they have small talk, but she never brings up her offer to see the trade minister again. After dessert, she stands and thanks them for such pleasant dinner company – and wishes them a restful night.
LW: In the morning you will be on your way?
K: We will be contacted then by our missing party member.
LW: Good luck.
She leaves. Kev and Zantlin get out of there. As they leave unescorted, Kev feels a tap on his shoulder.
Butler: Sir, did you have a chance to speak with the king?
K: He was not at dinner.
B: He should have been…
K: She said he was detained. I didn’t ask why. Honestly, if you don’t want people to lie to you, don’t ask them to.
K: Had I asked and something was going on, she’d have lied anyway.
B: True. Would you be…I must ask you something. Could you see me in an hour?
K: I suppose. I will be in my chambers.
B: Thank you.
An hour passes; the butler does not come by. Kev dresses.
Yorn: You get the king to bed ok?
Servant: Milady said he was ill and wasn’t to be seen. So I’m free early.
Zantlin, Robin, and Yorn get drunk with the servant. Yorn learns that the Lady has been on edge since her brother has arrived. The servant doesn’t know why…it’s between two nobles so it’s not his business.
Fort save: 33, 25, 30…the servant tips down face-first. Heal 32…looks like he’s been poisoned. Zantlin casts Neutralize Poison and he’s fine.
Yorn brings the ale to Kev and says that it’s poisoned. Someone’s trying to kill us! He says that Zantlin told him to bring a sample. Kev doesn’t want to drink out of the flower vase, but instead wants to find Zantlin…who’s in the kitchen.
Zantlin: I already used my spell…I can tell you in the morning. If Granny was here, she could tell you. In another 6 hours I can cast it.
Yorn: You want us to confiscate all this poisoned ale so no one else drinks it?
Z: I wanted you to know so I sent Yorn.
K: You miserable bastard! Why didn’t you handle it? You people invented this stuff!
Listen checks: up to a 27. There’s a faint knocking noise of metal on stone. Not sure which direction it’s from. Sounds like it’s from below. A way down?
Is there a cellar entrance outside? Yes!
Yorn Opens Locks on the padlock. Below is a metal door with no latch or opening on this side. No latch, no keyhole, no anything. Kev knocks on it…26, 22, 28 Listen – Yorn hears the clanging stop. Kev hands Yorn his adamantine longsword and Yorn starts hacking…it takes 2 rounds. After the first round, we hear noise behind us!
Yorn and Robin recognize the speech…
Yorn: They’re here, those egg bastards!
Init! There is casting afoot.
Horrifying experiments descended from orcs, goblins, and other fell beasts. They are slightly reddish.
Robin turns and fires on the spellcaster for 16 points.
Kev – 1 was making noise. He moves up and attacks…rather, trips him. Or tries to and fails.
Yorn smashes the door, drops Kev’s long sword, pulls out his own sword, and moves next to 2 and 3.
Someone casts over the party other than Yorn…Burning Hands.
2 attempts to cast on Yorn but Yorn resists. Except for #1, they didn’t try to draw weapons on us either. Same for 3. 4 disappears in a wall of darkness.
Zantlin bonks 1 for 11 points. Zantlin shoots 3 for 16, 15, and miss.
Kev full attacks 1- crit for 32, hit for 17, and dead. He steps down and to the right behind Yorn.
Yorn kills both 3 and 2, then asks, “where did the last four go? They were right over there!”
Zantlin attempts to dispel the darkness and does. 4 is actually close to us. Zantlin notices that 4 has no weapon. Then 4 attempts to cast Charm on Zantlin…Zantlin resists.
Lady Walcraft opens a window above Zantlin and asks, “what are you doing?”
LW: Why are you fighting on my grounds?
Us: We’re being attacked!
Zantlin thought he saw something behind her…
Robin shoots 4; 4 turns around and smiles.
Robin: Yorn this one scares me!
Y: Aim for the middle one, you’ll be fine!
He hits for 15, miss, miss.
Kev moves behind 4 in the kitty-corner position and attacks for 16.
LW looks at Kev.
Yorn: These cultists of Coot are attacking us!
Yorn cuts 4 in half.
Out of init.
LW: My heroes… 17, 18, 22,
Many of us notice she didn’t look that scared and is not upset that they’re here.
Yorn: I suppose you hired tehse thugs just like the frog things on the boat.
LW: I don’t hire these creatures. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about them.
Yorn breaks out the door after LW tells us that the basement isn’t welcome to guests.
Zantlin goes in after him, then casts Daylight. There are two metal doors in the first room.
Kev: We’ll go get him. Come on, Robin!
The lady comes around the corner.
LW: Gentlemen, you need to leave my basement. It’s off-limits. Don’t make me call my guards.
Listen: 12, 14, 20, 19 – Zantlin and Robin hear muffled screaming.
Zantlin: Yorn, we’re not supposed to be down here. Especially don’t go through that door.
Spot 14, listen 19: (Yorn gets one, Zantlin gets one)
The lady starts to cast. Init!
Kev didn’t notice that she’s casting…
Zantlin will cast Hold Person on LW if needed.
Kev is up…he notices she’s trying to cast, so he initiates a grapple. She gets a 30; he gets a 31. She cannot cast any spell with a somatic component unless she has Still Spell. She is Held.
Instead of casting, she casts something else…nothing happens to Yorn.
LW: No, do not go into my basement! This is mine!
Zantlin knows she’s trying to Blind Yorn.
Then she starts screaming.
Z: Need to quiet that down!
He casts Hold Person on her…she gets a 34.
Robin readies to intimidate the first guard in sight, nocking an arrow.
Yorn runs over to the door and smashes it for 42.
Kev tries to Pin her…and does so. He also gags her. She tries to break the grapple and fails.
Lights start lighting up throughout the mansion. Robin continues his ready.
Yorn smashes the door to find another empty room. Listen 17 – Yorn and Zantlin can hear more noise.
Yorn: We’re getting closer! Who do you have in here you foul bitch!
Kev: Stop making it worse! Get out of the open, Robin – take some cover!
Kev drags her into the basement. She still can’t escape.
More Listen: Yorn2 5, Robin 7, Zantlin 10, Kev 24.
Kev: They’re coming! Help me tie this bitch – I mean Lady – up!
Zantlin delays. Robin moves into the room, picking up the sword on his way.
Yorn opens the next door and steps into the hallway – the noise is louder to the northeast. Kev drags the Lady into the next room.
Robin spots the King on the stairs…
K: What’s happening? Why all the noise in my sister’s house?
Robin: I can explain. He did it (points to Kev).
K: I heard my sister yelling; where is she?
R: She’s with Kev, who’s keeping her safe from enemies. Right Sir Kev?
King: He better be.
R: Surely you saw the bodies as you came in? We apologize for the doors.
Yorn: I think it’s over here!
Yorn smashes the next door. The servant Yorn was drinking with is now chained up on a table.
Yorn: The prisoner is in here!
Zantlin moves into the room and finds one unconscious servant tied to the wall, and another one (the guy we were drinking with) chained up on a table. There are some desiccated body parts laying on the ground.
Zantlin figures this pile of desiccated body parts looks like evil.
Z: What kind of evil are they doing in here!? Bring ‘em in here and make ‘em explain what the hell this is! What in the name of Arianna is going on!
Kev hears more faint noises from the room to the right.
Kev, to Lady W: What’s in that room!
Kev: Yorn! Open this door!
Kev drags her to the north. She can’t escape the grapple.
King: Over here, guys!
Robin hears the sound of many boots as the ramp fills with guards.
Robin moves past Yorn (?!) to guard; Yorn moves to the door and misses it.
Zantlin moves to ungag the servant.
Z: What are they doing to you?
Servant: Someone snagged me as I was heading down from your room! I didn’t see who it was…but I have this rock in your hand.
Z: Someone kidnapped this man!
Servant: I’ve never been down here.
Servant: It was after the drinking!
Steve: At least it wasn’t a doppelganger…
Kev: We don’t have time for that – the guards are coming, and there’s someone in this other room. Bring your lockpicks!
She finally breaks the pin. Kev will try to put her back in it…and does.
The king: Arrest them all!
Z: It’s that bitch who needs to be arrested – there are body parts in the basement!
8 guards and 4 archers are outside.
Robin moves in, sword drawn, and says, “Hurry up Yorn!”
Yorn shatters the door and steps into the next room – there’s a guy chained up in a ball on the floor.
Y: There’s another prisoner in here!
Listen: Granny hears no crickets. The rest of us hear more guards coming down from upstairs.
Zantlin moves out of the room with the two captives and casts Mass Shield of Faith.
LW misses Kev. Kev delays.
Robin: Now or never, Yorn.
He steps back to block the door.
King: Arrest them!
One of the guards moves up with his sword out, and says, “Lay down your weapon and you won’t be harmed.”
Yorn moves in, rolls over the prisoner, and spots the king. He rips off the gag and calls out, “The king is in here, in chains! The one outside is an imposter!”
(It’s King Uther)
Y: I thought the king was supposed to be sick – how can he be leading an army!
Y: I’ll defend you, Your Majesty.
Zantlin uses a Wind Wall to block the archers. LW can’t escape Kev. One of the Kings moves in and casts a Blade Barrier to block Yorn from escaping. He didn’t catch Yorn, thankfully.
Kev: Guardsmen – I call upon you, your king is tied up in the next room. That man (points to other king) is an imposter. Subdue him and see the truth when his spell passes. I will not hurt the king’s sister. Do not escalate this! Take that man into custody!
Diplomacy with PEP – 21.
Kev: Everyone hold…don’t attack unless attacked…Zantlin.
Robin’s standing there with a sword in his face…he delays.
Soldier in front of Robin: You refuse to give up?
R: I refuse to make an uneducated choice.
Off his other hip, he pulls a greataxe and attacks and rolls a 1.
Yorn: Your majesty, can you stand?
King: I don’t think so.
Yorn shreds the door to the north, into the hallway.
Y: Zantlin, get in here!
More soldiers approach Zantlin.
S: Sir, I need you to lay down your weapons. Zantlin moves into the room with Robin, touches Robin, and Dimension Doors. They appear on the other side of the Blade Barrier in the room with the king.
LW tries to break the pin and does.
LW: Help, help!
The fake king walks up to the Wind Wall and casts…Blasphemy.
We are variously weakened and dazed. 6 points of strength for 4 rounds. Kev attempts to pull her back up the hallway…and can’t move her.
We’re all dazed. She frees herself.
Kev is undazed; he drops the Lady, says, “We gotta go,” and moves into the room with the real king. He moves between 1 and 3.
Robin touches the king and Zantlin.
Guards move. Yorn doesn’t have his hat…Zantlin teleports us out. We move upstairs, grab all our stuff, and then teleport just outside of Blackmoor.
We land. Zantlin Heals the King. Yorn watches; Kev dresses.
The king wakes up.
Z: This is the second time we’ve healed you.
Kev: There is clearly a consipiracy.
Uther: Yes. This is the second time she’s tried to kill me.
Yorn: Your sister, and the king, are both pretty powerful spellcasters.
Kev: Has she been working out?
Us: Perhaps we should get you to your castle.
The king recommends we head for the harbor. Yorn lends the King his ring of invisibility. Kev lends the king his Axiomatic longsword which appears to do no damage to him, which is a good sign. We get to the castle, and the guards bar our way across the gate.
Uther: Let me through.
Guards: Yeah, right. We’ve had reports of a false king.
Yorn: He’s the real thing! Would you doubt…
The king eventually says he’ll handle this, and the king touches the guard. He casts something Zantlin doesn’t understand, but the guard kneels.
Uther leads us to his private chambers.
Uther: Gentlemen, you have helped me twice now and you are not subjects of my kingdom.
R: It’s a bad habit of ours.
K: We don’t like to see bad things happen to good people.
Y: And your sister’s no good.
K: Why would your sister want us to go to the dwarves?
U: NO idea.
Y: Probably to get us out of her hair.
U: I suspect she’s found more of the substance…
Y: What substance?
U: Our mages have found an odd substance that allows them to do more than what they should be?
Y: Like those gems they always use?
U: Gems have been used for a long time. This allows this to do more.
Z: We have heard of this.
U: And you know that it can turn people insane.
K: Weve heard that.
U: I was just talking to her the day I arrived when I woke up in that room.
K: She’s committed open treason now, your Majesty. I’ll send a detail to arrest her.
Us: Bring a lot of mages.
Us: We haven’t seen Solinarius (sp) in a while…either he’s in on this plan, or he’s dead.
The king says he needs sleep but his guards can defend him. We volunteer to watch him but he says he trusts his guards. We’ll stay in an inn.
K: Your Majesty, what is the penalty for treason?
U: Death, usually. If she’s acting on her own will, the penalty may be the same.
Y: What if she’s under that Coot thing?
U: Penalty may be the same.
Morning comes and Granny scries upon us…we are on the dock of Blackmoor.
She’s surprised to find us there.
We had a busy day – spoke to many gods; the King was kidnapped; the king’s sister is a powerful caster and evil, and there’s a fake king.
Any cure to Zantlantium? Well, no cure to the insanity.
Z: The kIng’s sister has some, and she’s been holding it.
Granny has never tried or read about when the substance is removed from an affected person. She’d try that first.
Bigger problem than a tiff between nobles.
Sildanus – he’s been gone for days now. He’s either in the dungeon, in league with her, or dead.
K: after we got the king from the dungeon, you can probably come back. We need to talk to the king about containing the element.
G: Very good.
K: Although the mages may tell him it’s fine.
Granny knows that none of the mages can protect the king, and tells us that.
Granny says she has worked with it enough to be safe. But, she has a question whether the use of the material is something we should continue with.
G: Zantlin, you spoke to the gods?
K: I need you here. We can talk about it when you’re here, if you don’t think you’re dangerous.
Z: The king needs all the help he can get…and if he doesn’t want you here, we’ll all just leave.
K: Get here. We’ll talk about this in person.
Z: How long will it take? It is easier if we don’t need to play around with spells.
Granny will bamf in for next time.
