What happens in Vegas heads to London!
Morris and Rene successfully infiltrated the big private game with four tunas and four COIL agents who were hoping to beat these feebs and take the money. At the same time, Simon and Ana snuck into the basement and set all the money ON FIRE. Then we all walked out and walked away...
We will meet next week, presumably to play something other than SWING.
December 3, 2017
Morris and Rene are going to be in the tournament. Ana will hopefully be up there as well, so Simon will have to wait and listen. We’ve got our contact, Bubba, stashed in a safe house. We also took some money from some woman and we’ll use that to enter the tournament.
Ana reports in early to help set up. Two rooms are closed; the third room is prepared for the private game. They set up the bar and set up a large table in the middle of the room…there will be a private dealer in there getting things ready.
Ana won’t be able to just watch them set up, but she may notice something funny with this table. She’s not much of a gambler but does have an eye for detail…nothing obvious to rig a game, no cameras, etc. The cards are still sealed. She chats up the dealer for a bit…+4 rapport. She gets his name…he’s worked private rooms before. The game is both more and less intimate than usual. She asks for any clues and he gives her some tips. No real dirt here.
Can Ana find out who’s admitting folks into the game and maybe determine who’s in the game? Before the game would require finding that info from somewhere else. Just before the game, it shouldn’t be as big of a problem.
Rene goes down to the casino for some money. Morris swaps the money into his suitcase, puts on his best suit and tie, and arrives on the floor for the game. The guy at the door isn’t quite sure about letting Morris in to the private game but he’ll ask the other players.
There’s some big Italian dude who’s dressed nicer than he should be; he looks like he’s trying to portray money. There’s also an old money-looking English guy there already. A few more people show up; an American wearing a bunch of snakeskin; the lady (Mary Sue) that we shook down looks pretty nervous. Rene shows up around this time. Everyone hands over big sacks of money for chips; a guard disappears with the money each time (goes into an elevator and heads down).
Ana calls out that the money is going into a certain elevator and suddenly there is a knock at Simon’s door. He looks out the peephole and spots a serving girl with a cart. (probably with instructions not to drink anything). She says she has an order for Simon…4 tuna fish sandwiches and a glass of water. It was ordered by the room rented by Rene. Simon tips her and heads off to the elevator to at least see what floor it gets off on…all the way to the basement. Shortly after it leaves, the next elevator heads to the basement. Then he enjoys a tuna fish sandwich.
So we see three people – Chuck Brown (old guy with glasses), the big Italian guy, and Mary Sue Scranton. We also see the American, the old British guy (looks like Auntie but a bigger jerk and not nearly as girthy); a stereotypical New Yorker, and a Chinese person. They start taking their positions at the table.
The Italian guy looks like he’s muscle, not the brains of the operation – but yes, he seems to be mobbed up.
Shortly after this, a tall, slender black American woman walks in.
Rene: Ah, the Aladdin hotel!
She’s surprised to see him here.
R: Heard about this last night. Any way I can lose lots of money in a short period of time. What are we playing, anyway?
She laughs and goes to bar while Rene distracts her.
Morris: Well old chap, what do you think? Looks like there’s still room…
Rene: Is this guy playing? We got an open seat right here, let’s get this going!
The dealer and doorman shrug their shoulders and wave him over. Morris knows that Mamba is here but doesn’t spot anything unusual. There are a couple of serving girls, including Ana.
The four people we don’t recognize seem to be a lot more haughty towards the rest of us…like they’re old money and we’re not worth their time. They seem to be a little more comfortable with Rene.
If half the people in the game are in debt and would pay their winnings back, and the other half of the table are COIL members, the money ends up in someone’s hands anyway.
Morris, Ana, and Rene make gambling checks (7, 5, 4) and Alertness. We still don’t see anything rigged; no one’s counting cards, no magnets, no mirrors…and the three people who were given loans are bad at this. That’s why they’re in debt in the first place. The PC’s are doing ok; the other four are cleaning up. The three patsies are starting to sweat while we’re doing ok. The other four aren’t the best card sharks but they’re probably good enough.
Simon gets into the elevator. Wait, no.
Ana makes an Alertness roll…there are a bunch of security guys looking pretty fit…they’ve all got pistols in their jackets. She counts several in the private game; there are definitely double-digit security guys in the casino. We never really cased the joint so it’s not clear exactly how many. They can probably communicate with each other if needed.
Simon calls Ana and gets her out of the room so they can go up to the roof. Wait, no. The elevator isn’t secured so they can just get into the elevator. They head downstairs to the casino floor, and Ana manages to sucker one of the guards into a bathroom with the promise of a little action. Once alone, she attempts to knock him out…and succeeds. Then she attempts to stash the body in a stall. She brings the uniform to Simon so they can break in downstairs.
They get into the basement. There are a few guards and some serving people around…no piles of money to be seen. Where would it have gone? Should look for a secured door with guards. Ana follows Simon past a couple of armed guards in front of a strong door.
Ana knows the group is better htan the sum of its parts, so we get a bonus…
We both get the jump on the guards…roll for attack, do 1 physical damage, and land knockout blows. Ana grabs a laundry cart for the bodies while Simon opens the door. On each side of the door is a large key slot…must be some kind of computerized key thing. Do the guards have keys? Why, yes, they do. We open the door and wheel through with our cart. There’s an observation room near here with lots and lots of screens.
We take the guns and radios off the guards, then make sure the guards are well knocked out. Then we sneak past the security room…3 more guards inside. These guys have automatic rifles.
We attempt to sneak past the window and find an area that’s all cages – secured storage. There’s another guard at attention inside the gate. He certainly will know someone’s there. No one jumped out the monitor room yet…there are lots of valuable items in the cages – petty cash, chips, safes, money counting machines, etc.
Ana starts messing with one of the trash bags in the hallway. Simon goes around to the guard and tells him, “Boss wants to talk to you. He didn’t call on the radio because it’s about one of the other guys.” He’ll Take it From Here, and Discretion is his middle name.
The dude seems a little suspicious but goes with it. Simon offers to take his place. As he passes, Ana attempts to get the jump on him.
Simon attempts to get his attention just before Ana clubs him over the head. She is Forever Vigilant and takes advantage of the opportunity provided by Simon and successfully whacks him over the head. She grabs the guard and takes him with her. They need his key to get into the vault. Solid Burglary…there are chips, cash, money counting machines, and past there is another corridor…with cameras and pressure plates. There’s also a vault door down the corridor.
What now? We drop our friend on a money counting machine, grab his shoe to block open the cage door, then rush into the control room. Stealth! 1 for Simon, 2 for Ana…
Two of the guys are just turning to look at us, and the third guy pulls his rifle…initiative!
PC’s get +6 and +6…guards at a +1. Ana darts over to the guy with the rifle and attempts to take him out. She hits for 6…thankfully, she Never Misses and knocks the guy out. Simon pummels the other guy and drops him over his keyboard. The third guy puts his hands up right away as they pull out guns. He stays away from the radio until we swat it away.
Simon: This casino’s about to have a bad fire day. Either you profit from it, or you get burned. You get that vault door open for us, and in the confusion no one will know how much you have in your pockets.
Guard: What if I say no?
Ana: *poke, poke*. Your choice.
Guard: Uh, ok…
He moves over to a control panel and Simon stops him…he says he’s turning off the plates. Good idea. The code is 8675309.
Ana grabs someone’s lighter and we walk over to the vault. The guard punches in the code and opens the vault door…beyond are substantial stacks of cash. They kick the money into a pile and fluff it up good, then light ‘er up. The guard grabs himself a stack of cash…not sure if it’s because he doesn’t want to get shot, but he pockets some. There is definitely flames in here. We jam the vault door open so the flames don’t go out…we get everyone into the control room. Then we knock out the last guy with the pockets of cash. At the door with the two keys, we snap off the keys in the lock, then we act casual and depart.
Ana: Radio the two playing that we stepped out for a smoke.
What’s been happening upstairs?
Back at the game…Rene forgot to have Ana drug the four COIL agents so we may have to win this the old fashioned way…blind stupid luck. No one’s cheating, the marks were just fish.
Empathy rolls: We get some initiative.
Morris will continue to stay quiet and gamble. Rene will pay less attention to the game and more attention to taunting them and knocking them off their game. This is going to cost him chips, but maybe he can hold off long enough.
We’re playing Viper, Rattlesnake, Adder, and Boa. Their Gambling vs. Resolve.
Viper, the Chinese man, can’t affect Rene. Morris can’t affect Adder…the large British-looking fellow. The Texas oil man is Rattlesnake…he can’t get to Rene. Rene hits Adder for a 3. Adder does nothing to Morris. The old New York Jewish guy is Boa and hits him for 2.
Viper doesn’t affect Morris. Morris gets more of Adder’s chips and his fellows snicker. Rattlesnake misses. Rene attacks Adder…hits dat 2-box. Adder misses Morris. Boa does nothing to Rene. Viper plays against Rene and it doesn’t look good for him…but he’s as good as his team. Morris uses his Swing die and finishes him off.
The little fish are definitely gone but both Rene and Morris are hanging around, surprisingly. Rene takes on Boa who pulls one out of his rear end (Fate point).
Adder walks away from the table, grabs a beer, and hangs around to watch unlike the other marks. Boa tags Rene. Viper does exceptionally poorly…so Morris turns around and bangs him for 2. Rattlesnake misses Morris. Rene hits Viper for 3. Boa misses. Viper hits Morris; Morris gets him back with Swing die. Rattlesnake attacks Rene and gets him. Rene puts Viper on the ropes…Boa attacks Morris and misses badly…Morris can’t finish Viper. Rene takes a cheap shot on Boa and hits. Boa takes chips from Rene holds firm against Boa. Viper and his tiny pile of chips attacks Morris. Morris finishes Viper off and clears some X’s.
Morris gets a 2-box. Rene hits Boa. Morris uses the aspect to hit Boa. Rene uses the aspect to hit Boa. Boa misses Morris badly; Morris counterattacks and finishes him.
Rattlesnake finally takes some of Rene’s chips. Morris finally loses a hand to Rattlesnake. RS gets some from Rene. Now Rene will taunt him…no, because that looks like we’re colluding. We just beat up on Rattlesnake…or not; he starts to get hot. Eventually we got him, and Morris and Rene put it all on one hand where Morris wins. Just then, the fire alarm goes off.
Morris thanks them for a thrilling game, offers to buy a round, and says it’s time to evacuate. Rene wanders over to Mamba, extends his arm, and asks her if she’d like to make an orderly exit. She storms off. Then he wanders over to Rattlesnake and extends his arm once again…
We evacuate the building and suddenly the “Out for a smoke” comment makes sense. We get down to the casino floor and perhaps smell a bit of smoke. Morris cashes his voucher and we depart.
Well, we didn’t destroy the Jamaican operations but we know where it is. We did destroy the cash and managed to get one over a team of COIL agents. We can always pick up Mamba again later if we need.
The debts “owed” to the casino never really happened but it was enough to get the players thinking they had to play it there.
We found the operation, destroyed it, and figured out their plan. Seems like we put an end to this one.
The Knockout blow mechanic seems pretty powerful here. It might be ok for Mooks, but absolutely not for Named characters.
We would be lined up for a game on the 10th and 17th. No game on the 24th or 31st.
