The Ana show
We asked around in Bilbao and found Antonio Perez's address. We headed there at night because Simon was afraid we'd be too late. Indeed we were, because just as we showed up some dudes killed him. Then we killed the dudes, and Ana informed Morris that there was indeed a "Dead Ninja Storage" sign on the Bentley. Not wanting to talk to the Spanish authorities, we decided to head for Rene's place...in Paris, 9 hours away.
October 8, 2017
Hank Grundy is off our list. James Snow is secured right now. We have been told we can probably take Abel off our list.
Do we have any contacts there? Rene does know someone, another fashion photographer…the fashion scene isn’t what it is in London…it’s an industrial city in the north of Spain. We’ll need to bring the Bentley.
We head downtown. Rene can meet with his contact at dinner. Simon can try to get a read on the police situation, and since it’s an industrial city Morris will fit right in.
Sebastian, Rene’s contact, is found working on some negatives. He asks his contact if he’s heard of Antonio Perez – he’s not a model, but was part of the art scene…and is a person of interest in an investigation.
That’s not really Sebastian’s thing, but the unsavory types are known to hang out in Portugalete. And there’s a party going on at Sebastian’s place tonight if Rene and Ana want to attend.
Simon wants to drive through some of the shadier parts of town. He’s not sure how to do this, but Morris suggests we find a bar near a smokestack, and that’s going to be a workingman’s bar. Once inside we can ask where to avoid – and go there.
Morris doesn’t hang in those kind of places much anymore but in a former life…they find a place without many motorcycles outside and head in. We draw a little bit of attention but nothing serious.
It’s not hard to know we’re foreigners, particularly based on our pale English/American complexion. Rapport +4, Alertness +4/+3 – no one is going to start a fight with us.
Morris starts up a chat with Diego, clearly a working man. They chat a bit…Diego tells them that Portugalete is where some of the less savory type hang out. Lock your doors there. He also mentions a bar where there tend to be a lot of fights in the news.
After a drink or two, we’ll head out and reconnect with Rene. We can corroborate the information and determine that Portugalete is where Simon can go to determine how the police work here. (Is this the kind of city where you have to bribe the police to operate as a criminal or just not get caught?).
Simon will want to dress down and go through that area of town to watch the cops. Rene and Ana could attend the party that they were invited to, all in an effort to build contacts.
Investigation while roaming the bad part of town. Simon’s not afraid of fighting someone (he’s got an Aspect there)…Hip investigate. Simon comes out mostly unscathed, but doesn’t hear a lot bad about the cops. There are more cops here but we didn’t find anyone talking about crime bosses paying the police or anything.
By midnight, Morris and Simon are off to our hotel. While at the party, Rene and Ana are introduced to a lot of new people. Rene’s Rapport – he doesn’t get anything really interesting. Ana was short by 7 shifts. Looks like that party ended early. Ana now has the aspect, “Wore out her welcome”. We may even hear about this on the radio. Apparently someone got a little too hands-on and she didn’t appreciate the attention…hopefully his thumb will go back into position.
Simon will talk to the police and claim to be a PI. He’ll use the Aspect, “No need to get involved…I’ll take it from here.” Morris will go find a coffee.
Simon inquires about Antonio Perez…do they have any info? Well, he’s not wanted right now. They don’t know him, and they’re not looking. Phone book or public records may help. He doesn’t bring up that Perez is rumored to be world-famous art thief.
We find a lot of Antonios and some Perez’s , but no Antonio Perez.
Well, if Ana isn’t welcome in town maybe she goes full villainess. If she’s not welcome in polite society, maybe in impolite society? Unfortunately her skillset does not match what we’re looking for…and Rene may not want to risk sullying his name (or establishing a persona of being the henchman for some crazy Russian woman).
Next night, Rene can find a party and Ana will crash it. There are some artists who assemble to critique foreign films and smoke strange stuff. Rene’s happy because he’s not going.
Simon rolled very, very well…he puts the aspect on the party, “Dangerous game”.
At the party, aspects are tapped (Femme fatale, worn out her welcome, and Dangerous Game)…Ana’s not the only one ready to break thumbs. This party is more focused on abstract art. Through the clouds of smoke, Ana starts mingling with her sort of folks. If she can get a Neat, she’ll be able to make the connection. She uses Investigation, not Art or any charisma-based skill. She gets a 7…3 shifts, so she gets her Swing die.
She doesn’t need to literally screw anyone, but she does flirt with and talk to Mateo Hernandez. He has not personally hired Antonio Perez, but has worked with him…and has his LKA. Antonio lives in the nicer part of town just across the river in Las Arena in a 2nd story flat.
Since Simon is a Man of Action, he’s ready to go kick some ass. We need to figure out what and how we approach this.
We head up to Las Arenas and circle Perez’s place. Are the lights on? We’re doing something tonight…not sure if it’s break in or knock and chat, but we’ll do something.
Alertness as we roll past…Best is +5. As we arrive, we hear the unmistakeable sound of someone screaming as they die. Simon leaps out; Morris tells everyone else to get out and he’ll park. Ana got a Fab Alertness…we notice someone failing to hide hear the steps leading up to the flat. Some of us spot the glint of steel as the car empties…
Ana: I have this outside. You go upstairs!
As Ana runs up, she spots a fighting knife in the man’s hand.
Ana wields her pistols and tells him to drop the knife. Simon runs past her into the house.
The man puts his knife up, but doesn’t drop it. He *does* whistle. Investigate or Empathy…yes, that was a signal. He’s smirking. Unknowingly, Morris parks the car a zone away.
Ana told him to disarm and he didn’t, plus he signaled. She fires and drops him. Simon is in the Tight Halls of the building…there are people upstairs. He pulls his gun and heads up the stairs cautiously. At the top of the stairs are two apartments and a window at the end of the hallway…three guys with knives and one guy wearing black pajamas and a mask stands near a window. They’re moving down the hall away from Simon. One of the apartments is Perez’s place.
Simon: Stop right there!
The pajama dude does not stop. The thugs turn and speak in Spanish. Simon does not fire.
Rene follows behind Simon and pulls out his gun. No one fires.
The lot of the dudes turn left around the corner and open a metal door. Morris gets out and heads for the door.
Ana runs around to the back side of the building. The back side has windows into the apartments and a service door into the hallway.
Simon follows the footsteps down the hallway and up some stairs. He rounds the corner and sees a metal door closing. The Goons are lagging behind Pajama Boy who’s out of sight. He catches them and knocks one guy out.
Rene rolls well on his Athletics roll (needed to cross zones through a complicated obstacle, like goons, a knocked out goon, and stairs.
Hip alertness on the roof: No. He doesn’t see anything.
Simon mixes it up with the knife fighting goons and dodges them both. One goon stabs the wall.
Morris runs around the other side of the building and finds Ana in front of the door. She tries it, and it’s not locked. She finds herself in a small supply area full of cleaning supplies. She hears something going on upstairs, says something, and runs up. Morris says he’ll cover down here.
Up on the roof, Rene hears a loud ka-thunk. He makes a solid Athletics check…Pajama guy fires a large crossbow bolt into the wall next to him.
Ana gets a Fab Alertness and recognizes the sound of crossbow fire. She decides to handle things quickly…Rene isn’t here and he doesn’t carry a crossbow. Simon punches the guy who doesn’t have his knife in the wall…Fists +3 hits the goon and drops him, then runs up the stairs. He spots PJ man with an unloaded crossbow.
Simon points his gun at Pajama boy and tells him to drop it. The goon pulls his knife out of the wall and moves up to Ana, slashing her. Morris hears shouting on the roof and pulls out his gun but can’t see anything.
Ana comments that the thug shouldn’t bring a knife to a gunfight…she uses her two-gun fury stunt and vaporizes the good. He slumps to the wall and falls to the ground leaving a trail of blood behind him.
As she moves up the stairs, she puts one more shot in the knocked out thug as she walks past. She spots some guy wearing pajamas on the roof.
The Pajama guy drops his crossbow and it swings on its harness….then something invisible happens and Simon gets no dodge. Simon takes 1 stress as suddenly, metal stars sprout from his chest. Then he turns to run. He leaps elegantly over to the next rooftop.
Simon takes aim and shoots. The Guns roll is +2 (next zone)…Pajama guy gets a +7 on dodge.
Looks like a +2 athletics to leap the roof. Simon says, “Get him, Ana!”
Morris uses his torch to spot the Pajama guy leap from roof to roof and figures our quarry is escaping. Then he runs into the building to follow.
Ana fires and hits by 4…so it’s a 7-shift. Major consequence so we pick what that consequence is. Limping…Pajama Boy is limping. Then Ana runs and attempts to leap over the gap…Athletics…she needs her Swing die to get the minimum +2.
Pajama boy walks over to Ana and pulls out a hidden sword…he swings! +5 vs her +4. She takes a 3-box. Then, anyone on the roof suddenly realizes I’m On The Roof…so everyone’s nervous about this. This includes Pajama Boy.
Simon takes aim and taps the aspect, “Limping” for a +2 totaling +8. Dude takes a Severe consequence…Destroyed Kneecap.
Morris huffs up the stairs and stops in the doorway of Perez’s apartment. He spots no more goons in there.
Ana levels her gun at Pajama Boy’s head and tells him to give up. Her intimidation isn’t very good…and “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”
She’s bleeding and he doesn’t look very contrite. She takes the fate point and reconsiders her actions, then pulls the trigger. She beats him by 6, dealing 9 shifts…and his headless body drops to the roof.
Simon: What are you doing?
Ana: You mean, “What did I do?”
Simon: We can’t get any answers from a corpse!
A: Go ask the guy you knocked out.
Simon sits down and carefully removes the throwing stars. What roll do we have for first aid? Nothing, I guess.
Simon and Ana talk about getting back into the apartment.
S: The police will be here any minute now. (his gun isn’t silenced).
Rene pulls the crossbow bolt out. Everyone heads back downstairs. Morris starts to investigate quickly, and there’s a dead Spaniard in the room. Looks like he died of a sword wound that matches the injury on Ana.
We quickly ransack the apartment. When Ana gets down, Simon quizzes her about, “Knocked out guy?”
We find some coded messages suggesting Senor Perez was contacted by an organization, “P.A.I.N.” about some high-profile art thefts. We have to grab those messages.
The missing art is not obviously here…there is art in the place, but as much as Pierre had. This apartment is not a shrine to his criminal activities.
Ana comes into the apartment without the ninja, who apparently she threw into the trunk. She says she didn’t check the body yet.
Simon: Did you put him in the Bentley?
Ana: I didn’t have time to check yet.
Morris grabs a bottle of beer and we head out with our loot…we have to ransack quickly. We also have the crossbow bolt, the throwing stars, and the sword. We head for Rene’s flat…in Paris, 9 hours away.
We will pull over to get some forensic evidence once we’re well out of town, and then we’ll decide if we need to dispose of the body here or not.
We should be good to go for next Saturday. Aaron will be back and probably ready to talk to someone who isn’t a relative, and Scott’s outage should be done.
