Sin City, here we come
We found out that the money was heading to Vegas and figured we needed Mamba to help track it further from there. We let her go, then found her at a crappy motel outside of town. From there we found out she's using various low-life debtors to move the money back into town, and there is some kind of tournament tomorrow.
Everyone has now met Mamba.
November 19, 2017
The money is on the cargo plane. We don’t know what continent that plane is going to, so our tracking device may not quite do the job. Morris and Rene need to find out where it’s going.
There are guards running down the hallway towards Ana, Simon, and Mamba.
We knew that COIL agent Mamba flew here to pick up money. She’s not stationed here, so she may be picking it up at its destination.
Ana has a tall American woman tackled to the ground. Time to cuff and stuff!
Airport security surrounds all three of them and say, “You’re coming with us. Cooperate and we’ll being you to a private office.”
Simon: Ok, but she’s not going out of my sight!
They’re escorted to a office and the lot of them are sat down.
Morris hears some yelling in one of the loading hallways. Is that Simon? One of the many shouting voices may be his. Rene looks through his camera’s zoom lens…all he sees is a bunch of guards. Morris looks at the clipboards for the planes…there’s one with bananas etc…looks like the right plane. It’s heading for Las Vegas.
Morris: Get a picture of this, Rene. We’re going to Vegas.
Rene: I wonder what the record for showgirls is.
Morris notifies Simon that the cargo plane is headed for Vegas. Simon is trying to accuse her of being a notorious drug smuggler in the hopes that she lets something slip. He’s also trying to snow the guards into letting him start some investigation, including dumping out her purse.
They want him to stop digging. He says he’s been after her for years and he’s not stopping. Mamba is roiling her eyes at every idiot here.
Does Simon get anything more from Mamba with Empathy? No…she’s clearly not intimidated.
As Morris and Rene enter the airport, they spot a flight on the board leaving from Terminal 3. Not coincidentally, this is where the commotion was earlier. We buy four tickets to Vegas and Rene notifies Simon by radio that we’ve got 4 tickets.
Someone sticks their head in to say that the authorities on their way, shortly.
Rene and Morris talk…they can get to Vegas in time, but she’s got to pick up the money.
Morris: Simon, make sure she’s free and you’re detained. If she thinks she’s ok, she can finish the drop. Fly to Los Angeles and meet us in Vegas.
Simon’s not sure this is necessarily going to work or how it’s going to work.
Morris: If you think you can get her to roll over, take her to Vegas. If you don’t, let her go.
Simon says he needs to speak to Ana in private for a moment, so they head over for the corner.
S: Now we need to put on a show that this isn’t Smilin’ Sally so we can let her go…I’ll have to be embarrassed to have caught the wrong person, and let her go.
Ana leans in closely, looks at Mamba’s check, then wipes it down with a licked finger.
A: There is no scar and no makeup. This is not Sally.
The airport guards are easily fooled.
Mamba is a street-smart American and is suddenly suspicious. But she’s happy to be let go…
Another deceit - +1 and +0. The two PC’s are arguing about whether Mamba is “Smilin’ Sally” and Ana’s making it look like he’s wrong. Simon puts on a show but eventually acquiesces to her authority.
Ana: I am afraid this is a case of mistaken identity. I apologize for my partner.
Guards: You want us to tell the police to turn around?
S: Grr…we have no cause to hold her.
It’s obvious that Mamba is suspicious, but security lets her walk out the door. With a sore ass, they watch.
Simon and Ana skulk out in shame and head for the ticket counter to buy passage to the American Southwest. Rene is already drunk or distracted, but Morris spots a tall black woman with a huge afro and Jackie Onassis glasses boards the plane and sits down in First Class.
Once Simon is out of sight, he calls Rene and Morris and says hopefully she suspects nothing. They are on a flight behind them.
The plane lands in Vegas and presumably Mamba doesn’t know who we are. The plane empties off and our courier leaves the plane.
Morris: I’ll get us a car. You see if you can follow her.
His Stealth is -1…her alertness is +4. He knows she knows he’s following her. At the luggage rack:
Mamba: What do you want, Frenchie?
R: I was hoping to get your hotel room number!
M: Haven’t I seen you before? Aren’t you an actor or something?
R: Nothing so crass! I am a photographer.
M: Well Frenchie, I don’t like getting my picture taken.
She grabs her luggage and departs. He grabs his bag, follows her, and offers to buy her a drink.
R: Coffee? Wine? Your preference…
M: Well, I have some business in town. I’ll see you in two days at the Aladdin, once my work is done…
And she uses her bubble gum walk as she strides away.
Rene radios Morris and tells him that she knows who he is…so may as well get a flashy car. Shelby Mustang GT it is!
Kevin: This is Vegas. All you can rent are flashy loud cars.
As she walks off, Morris notices she’s not going out the front door but instead where the cargo is being unloaded.
Rene suggests that Morris go follow Mamba…Morris grabs a trash cart and follows her out towards the loading area (shipping area). He recognizes the cargo plane and watches a crate of bananas loaded onto several trucks. She gets in one of them and the three-truck convoy heads out. Morris ducks out, radios to Rene, and meets up with Rene. Morris throws Rene out of the driver’s seat, pops open his toolcase on his lap, and tells him to navigate.
We’re in a Mustang. Rene wants to know why Morris listened; Morris says he wanted to drive the Mustang and this way it’s Rene’s fault.
We trail them to a cheap motel on the outskirts of town. We’re outside the Golden Sands Motel, which appears not to have seen any upkeep in nigh on 30 years.
We pull up to a different crappy motel and watch the tracker…they move the money into the Golden Sands. We wait for a bit and then pull in…Morris gets a room facing the trucks, but parks on the other side. We also leave a message at the front desk of the Sands Casino for Simon and Ana when they check in.
S&A arrive in Vegas late, get the message, and head for the Golden Sands Motel. They join us there.
First thing we do is triangulate the transponder in the money…it’s in the Honeymoon Suite.
Is the curtain open to the room next to the Honeymoon suite? Yes. Rene goes for a look…No luck. Morris pops it open. No one inside; we close the curtains. Looks like there’s an air vent in between.
Morris turns the phone into a bug and puts the microphone into the air vent, then hacks the phone and calls Simon’s room to activate the bug. Rene uses the Geiger-pen to make sure the money is on this elevation, not in a tunnel.
The trucks are gone already…we didn’t know that. They apparently already headed for the airport, so no matter. Just means we don’t need to bug the trucks.
We let Simon know the plan – we’ll sleep now and listen, and move if we need to.
Morning comes…no sounds from the bugged room. No new trucks in the parking lot.
Later in the morning we hear a knock on the honeymoon suite door.
We hear voices…Mamba and some old white lady…”This will help clear your debt. You know what to do with it.”
We peek out the window to see a dried-up middle aged lady carrying a large duffel bag…she gets into a car and drives off. It’s not our tracking money…
The bag looks sort of heavy…Rene wanders out to see if she’s got the radioactive money and help her load up, she’s too nervous. He turns on his charms (viva la revolution sexualle) and she seems less afraid. He offers to help her open the trunk of her car, and turns on the pen…this is not the radioactive money. She nervously closes the trunk; she’s really protective of that bag.
Simon and Ana follow at a safe distance but have to track her by sight.
Rene looks for a place to hide out in the parking lot. Morris can spot him without *too* much difficulty, so he gives that up.
Eventually a fat guy with comically small hat perched on his head knocks on the door of the penthouse suite. He enters, and we hear a similar conversation. He owes someone some money and Mamba tells him that his credit’s been extended, and this should help with his debt. He exits the suite with a duffel bag on his shoulder; looks similar to the previous one. He heads for his vehicle. Tracker isn’t moving.
Rene says he needs to follow them…Morris agrees. Rene takes the Geiger pen and heads off in the Shelby.
After another hour, an elderly bald guy with glasses on the chain goes up and knocks. He’s let in, and we hear the same conversation. “Your debt at the casino is extended.” He grovels and thanks her profusely for the bargain he’s been made. He leaves after another 10 minutes. Plates are $plates and it’s $make-model-year. All the cars we’ve seen so far appear to be sort of shabby. These don’t appear to be the sort of people that would normally be with COIL. If they’re going to the casino they can either loan shark using gamblers in debt. And it’s probably one casino…
The two people who head into town don’t head immediately to a casino, but aren’t immediately doing anything with the money other than not letting it out of their sight.
About 2 pm, a large Italian-looking man knocks on the door and is let in. The conversation is the same other than this guy talking big about the mafia. Mamba doesn’t sound impressed but hands him a duffel bag, tells him his debt has been extended, and that he knows where to bring it. At this point the tracking money starts to move. Similar looking bag. Tracker is going north into the city…not many cars in the parking lot so it’s unlikely that Morris could steal one.
Morris calls out and says “Santa Claus has taken the present and is headed north into town. I don’t know how many presents the elves have left but I’ll keep watching.”
Neither of them can call back; Morris has the most powerful radio.
Rene and Simon can talk.
R: Simon, so I’m sitting in a hotel parking lot waiting for a guy to come out of his room. Is this what you call a stakeout? I hate this job; I’m so bored.
S: Yes. You’re following another guy then?
R: Morris just said another couple went out, and I think the trackable one is on the move as well.
They talk about it a little bit and talk…Rene suggests that Simon dig through the lady’s car and look for evidence she’s been to the Aladdin. He’s in easily…and finds a note saying she’s in debt to King Solomon’s Casino and to a lesser extent, many other casinos.
Morris starts pondering going over to Mamba’s room and asking for a loan. The others have the ability to bail him out of this *but* Simon would hate to interrupt a perfectly good stakeout.
Morris packs up his stuff in his case and wanders over to Mamba’s room, hat in hand.
He makes up a story about having lost all his money, drunk in public, and grabby with a showgirl…and his wife left him here. So he’s broke and lost in Vegas, and maybe she can help.
Mamba: There’s nothing I can do at the moment, but I do work with people who specialize in helping pay off debts. If you can wait a few days, maybe I can put you in touch with those people.
Keith: Head into the city, and I will meet you at the…(Empathy 3)…I have a little something I need to do at the Tournament tomorrow night. After that, meet me here and I’ll see if we can find you something to do.
She slams the door unnecessarily hard and he’s done.
Morris slinks off back to the room with the bug. Next time…
2 skill points for the night.
Before the end of the session, Morris hears Mamba talking to someone on the phone. She mentions something about Jamaica, a DEA enforcement official, and something about a guy wanting to hop in without rhyme or reason. No idea who she’s talking to, but she definitely sounds suspicious.
For next time, once Simon hears about the tournament he may not want to arrest her yet because she might make herself useful. All this not arresting BS is already driving him crazy.
Paul is out. Mitch is in next week.
