Simon and Rene play bad cop - worse cop
The information we ransacked from the dead Spaniard revealed that the next target was likely in Berlin - and we surmised it was an old copy of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. We got into the museum only to find out that someone set it on fire...but we found Pierre Foucard dashing around in the chaos. We tracked him down and captured him. We will have to go to the Swiss Alps and sneak into the castle.
October 15, 2017
We pull over, drag the body in front of the headlights, and check it over. We’re able to piece together enough clues to assume he’s an assassin hired by P.A.I.N.
What do we know about P.A.I.N ? Our rolls are dreadful…Political Artisans of Intellectual Novelty. They are art terrorists, surrealists, and attempt to subvert people’s way of thinking. They want to shake up the status quo and start a worldwide revolution. They steal or vandalize art and maybe even assassinate people.
Morris happens to have a shovel in the trunk, so we plant our Spaniard. It’s 3 am; we clean up a bit and continue to drive.
Around the time normal people wake up, we pull into Paris. The party at Rene’s is just breaking up; some of us have one more as a nightcap, and Simon calls in our information to Section 6. Actually, Rene’s radio is in London so we’ll need to go to the SWING office in town.
Based on the fingerprints we found, the other evidence, and our short list of suspects we are pretty much sure the thief was Pierre Foucard. Section 6 knows he’s been contracted by PAIN in the past…we know he was last seen entering West Berlin. If we are going to do something about this, seems like that’s where to go.
What would you steal in West Berlin? There’s a lot of music heritage in Germany. Lots of large buildings…Beethoven’s museum is in Bonn. The European national film archive is in Berlin, and that’s an art form that hasn’t been stolen from.
Neat art: No. We don’t know what might be the particularly high value target there.
Rene does know some people from Berlin and knows where the National Film Museum is. We chat on the flight and remember that there is a famous film, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, in the Film Museum. The most complete known version is there.
We touch down in West Berlin around sundown and head for the archive. Things are closing up; it’s lat enough at night. No one is at the front door but we will want to get in using Simon’s authority. As we wait at the door, no one comes – so we start to suspect the theft may already be happening.
Simon – what is the best way to break in and out? He cases the building. Rene uses the Infrared attachment on his camera. A few people watch us…
We see nothing from the street…but we notice the inside of the building is pitch black. Morris checks the power connection and finds that someone’s been in here. He quickly jury rigs a repair, and we see the lights come on, motors hum to life, etc. Our Alertness is all terrible. We break in through a service entrance and get into the public area. We see no one around here. The films are probably on the 6th floor. We hop in the elevator (because Simon trusts Morris’s work).
The elevator starts to fill with smoke so we flip up our gas masks. The building is on fire. We feel the heat wash over us as we get to the 6th floor. Lots of still pictures from old movies here. We decide to rescue the film first and look for whoever has set this. The fire is probably below us. We run down the hallway and find a guard desk with some information…and a guard standing there in a daze. He’s unresponsive. We do pull the fire alarm.
We start to split up but hear a heavy metal door go clang! We turn around and run that way. The group separates; Morris and Rene start to fall behind. Simon leaps down a flight of stairs and picks up another point. Ana also attempts to jump but doesn’t. Simon finds himself next to Monseur Foucard and tells him to get to the ground.
Pierre was On Top Of It…he waves a fist-sized ancient sculpture lump of stone thing in Simon’s face. His Resolve is 6…he feels himself get a little sleepy but pulls out of it…and Pierre is surprised. The Frenchman starts to descend again. Can he determine any of Pierre’s aspects? Yes…World Renowned Master Thief; Raging Egomaniac; Soft Spot for a Cause; Money is the Only Thing I Care For; I don’t trust anyone.
Simon attempts to bat the stone out of Pierre’s hand. He Can Fight When He Needs to, so he succeeds. Rene and Morris run up and can see the fray below…they do not jump down the stairs.
Ana calls out for Pierre to freeze and levels her pistol at him.
Pierre looks in surprise and starts to leap over the rail. Ana is Ever Vigilant so she fires. His Athletics is +6…her Guns is also +6. She hits and wings him for a 3-box as he jumps. We momentarily lose sight of him and hear a door bang as it closes behind him. Simon tries to leap over the railing but does not do it smoothly…the door’s closed as he lands. He grabs the stone at his feet.
Rene runs down the stairs. Morris attempts to hurry and stumbles into Rene; he’s got a Twisted Ankle.
Ana is first…she runs down the stairs, whips open the door, and enters…she sees Pierre duck behind some expensive-looking movie props. Can she keep an eye on him before he hides? Absolutely.
Simon runs as well and is in the same zone. He gets up to Pierre and uses Fists to put the condition “Cornered” on him.
Rene moves into the room with Pierre and tries to grab his knapsack without success. Morris hobbles in to see the fray…this room is filling with smoke and the far side has flames. He stands behind Simon to help contain Pierre (roll later if needed). Ana pulls out the tranquilizer gun and attempts to shoot him. She gets Far out vs cool.
He has to resist the poison and seems like he can. Pierre creates another aspect, Smoke Thick as Pea Soup…then tries to get past Simon and Morris, who hold him back. Simon tries to create another condition and succeeds with 5 shifts. Pierre is now Out of Breath and held.
Rene tries to grab the sack again and can’t. Morris can’t help secure Pierre.
Ana reloads and shoots Pierre again…+2 and -2 to hit for aspects. She hits and he’s at -2 for the Resolve check…and knocks him out.
Simon grabs Pierre; Morris attempts to put out the fire. Since the fire alarm was pulled, the authorities start to arrive.
What’s in the bag? Tools of the trade, a knife, and a well-secured film canister.
We’re taking Pierre. Do we want to put the film back? Do we need to save any people in the building? We think we got the fire department here in time.
We know that the bazaar was full of tables and umbrellas, etc. A block north of the bazaar is the largest park in Berlin.
We leave the film in a safe place, pocket the weird stone (Simon has it), and head out. Lots of noise and activity with the fire trucks. A chunk of the building is on fire but being hosed down by the professionals. They’re on the street.
We sneak out to the north and through the park. Everyone waits while Morris goes to fetch the Bentley.
Simon looks over the stone while Morris hobbles off for the Bentley. He hands it to Rene and asks if it’s some kind of artwork. It’s a fist-sized statuette that doesn’t appear to be ancient or anything…Rene says it shows the influence of many different cultures. He says that when it was waved in front of him, he almost lost consciousness.
They discuss brandishing the statuette and Rene is unable to knock Simon out with it.
Morris gets to the Bentley uneventfully…there is still some confusion but the fire appears to be under control. We decide to drive to London to avoid any questions about transporting unconscious people on an airplane.
Before leaving Germany, Pierre wakes up with Simon, Ana, and Rene.
Pierre: To what do I owe the pleasure?
Rene will attempt to break Pierre into talking.
Pierre: My superiors will find me, and you’ll pay!
R: They’ll find you in a cell…
Rene attacks him verbally and gets a +9 vs something not good.
He takes a Major, Infuriated, (+4) and Rene gets his swing die.
Can Simon identify something that Pierre did wrong with his crimes and help Pierre? Well, he can make his own Rapport checks. Shaken Confidence condition (one-use).
Pierre is obviously mad and says he works with powerful people, can call in favors, etc. Intimidation vs. Rene’s Resolve; it doesn’t work.
Rene: Who would be so stupid as to pay a fool like you for this job?
(tags for 1).
Simon attempts to needle him further and gets a 2-box.
Pierre looks at Rene and it finally clicks who we are…and he says that when he gets out, he’ll be adding to his collection of nice cameras (to intimidate)…Rene takes a 2-box.
R: If it’s you that steals my cameras, I’ll be able to find them easily!
Simon tries again to shred Pierre and takes advantage of the Egomaniac aspect…dealing a Severe consequence of Destroyed Confidence.
Pierre says he’ll take everything from our organization…he’s starting to come unglued. He can’t touch Rene and he’s now pretty mad at everything.
Simon continues to antagonize him and eventually he’s almost speechless with rage. We’ve broken him, and he talks.
He is working for Zoltan Zubriggen, an agent of PAIN based out of his castle in the Swiss Alps. Pierre was hired for some of the greatest art thefts known and had to bring the art to his castle for something. Pierre also calls the statuette an “art piece” and presumably Zoltan made it / had it made.
About that piece…how does Pierre make it work? Not sure…you just will it to work and present it to a person. It stuns the victim by inducing a weak(+1) Reverie. They don’t remember being presented with the stone.
If he’s such a good thief why did he need the art object? Because it made things easier. Someone just drove the art up to the castle…not exactly sure who, but not Pierre. Might be $contact in East Germany. There’s a secret handshake we know about.
The stolen art was taken to the castle…Zoltan’s guards know him. Zoltan is powerful in PAIN, rich, and brilliant.
Idealistically, Pierre doesn’t care about PAIN’s cause. He does care about their money.
Rene knows Zubriggen…he’s a party guy, politicians and diplomats and important businessmen have all been to the castle. It’s not that hard to find out when the next party is.
Next target was the Sgt. Pepper tapes in Liverpool.
How did he verify authenticity? They have experts (referring to the Mona Lisa). He got a list to work on.
Simon starts grilling him to know details so we could “steal” the Sgt. Pepper Tapes, then break into the castle. Or we could use the front door.
Two more skill points. Everyone should be here next week.
