Attack of the sniple rifle
We used the information from the drug lords to find the mansion that we think COIL is working from. We decide to stake out the house *and* put out a camera. Simon and Ana spot someone in a truck loading up with a couple crates of money...looks like our Mamba!
After buying time we trail the truck to the airport, lie our way onto the plane to track the money, and confront the presumed Mamba. Maybe we've got the wrong person, but it may be someone else bringing a crapload of money from a corrupt mansion to the airport.
November 12, 2017
Rumor has it, the place we seek is 1.5 hrsn of Brownstown, an old English plantation. COIL has been cornering the market on heavies here. The place is armed but no helicopters. No idea how many people are on the plantation, much less armed. These drug lords are not skilled at covert surveillance.
How do they expect to take ownership once COIL is gone? We’re supposed to send them a message.
The drug lords are not sure how COIL is laundering the money…that’s part of our job to find out.
They show us the place in person…not to the front door or anything, but nearby. Large mansion with a new-looking outbuilding. Looks like fields behind the mansion but we can’t see what’s growing there from the road. Not sure that it’s a bunch of drugs or anything; their huge influx of money is coming from elsewhere.
Could stake the place out from a mountaintop. Ana and Rene could look into the finances and registration of the place. Morris volunteers to set up a camera across the road to see who’s going in.
Back in Ocho Rios, we buy a camera and some $parts and prepare to stash the camera along the road. Ana and Morris work on that while Simon and Rene go to find some information. Rene helps Morris select and fix up a camera to get good pictures.
What kind of information can they find on who owns this land, any businesses registered there, etc. They go to the local clerk’s office and inquire about buying some property – who might the neighbors be? The clerk brings them to the basement and tells them to dig through some records.
“It’s in one of these three or four cabinets.”
Solid Investigation: 3. No businesses around there; it’s all private individuals. No clear code names, just family names we don’t recognize. It’s a residence, not a business. How big is it – 200 acres!
Can they find anything with the family name? Maybe, but not in the basement of the clerk’s office.
Are we still invisible? Well, Simon doesn’t go as Big Tex and he doesn’t want to miss out on a good stakeout. That means abandoning the persona, but it *did* get us some information pretty quickly.
That night we can drop off the camera, then dump Ana and Simon off somewhere. Rene comes with to make sure the camera gets set up right.
We get the camera set up during twilight. Rene uses a Fate point for “my camera sees everything” to help set things up. Then Simon and Ana are dropped off with their appropriate equipment (including provisions and sniper rifle)…they don’t bring the radioactive money etc because they don’t think they’ll be going onto the property yet.
We set up a rendezvous point and a backup if needed.
Where do Morris and Rene hang out that night – Brownstown, Ocho Rios, or where?
The mansion is near the ocean but not on it. The back side of the lot is all cannabis field…there’s just enough cover from the road to disguise it. There are laborers coming in from the fields to the house just as night falls.
Simon and Ana, make stake-out rolls…4 investigate and -2 alertness (Ana).
No one’s particularly alert…lots of pot plants. To one side they see the big shed, which is definitely newer than the rest of the grounds. As the last few workers bring packages to the house, Simon spots some kind of a dance hall or dance hall with big windows. The open windows provide a good view of the fields…and someone’s walking and keeping watch over the fields. Walking up to the house would go poorly.
Morris and Rene head back for Ocho Rios and find a party…hopefully one that may help us find information, mass quantities of drugs, or just a good time. Contacts +5…one of the nice hotels is having some kind of private shindig he can weasel his way into.
Any familiar names at this party? Anything we can connect to? Any kids of the rich old bastards who own some of the properties near what we’re staking out? Well, no one who owns the place.
We review our objectives – we may want to stop the laundering, but better would be to stash trackable money and follow it out.
The party is uneventful and not helpful.
Next day Rene sets up a darkroom for rapid development of pictures and we wait for evening to go pick our friends up. IN preparation for the enxt day and to do something, Morris acquires an average-looking delivery truck.
In the morning Simon and Ana watch the workers go out to the fields along with guards carrying Kalashnikovs. Later in the morning, they watch someone come out of the sheds with blocks of compressed marijuana or resin or something. Any signs of where the money would be as opposed to the product? The drugs go into the house.
Investigation 6 (Simon) or -2 (Ana). Would need to scale the fence to get in. Windows and doors are secure. Door from this vantage point requires a code key entry. Some guards, probably 5, are circling. There are other guards in the ballroom.
Trucks? 11 am, a large delivery truck pulls up. Something in it already, and a tall black woman with golden hoop earrings, big sunglasses and bigger afro, and high-heeled sandals gets out of the truck and enters the house. The truck appears to be some kind of rented lorry…no identifying marks we recognize.
After about an hour workers remove banana crates. Then large stacks of money from the house are moved into a crate. This crate goes into another larger crate, gets buried under some bananas. Probably millions of dollars. She hops into the truck with a few guards and drives away.
Shoot out a tire from here? Might be cool, but how is it useful?
We debate if we need to declare “shooting tire” vs. “shooting engine”, or if Ana can “shoot truck to create aspect” to screw the truck up and we see how good the aspect is (blown tire vs. cracked block).
We’ll go for creating an aspect…Ana taps an aspect plus +5 guns plus accuracy (fate point for +4)…1 + 2 + 5 + 2 = 10.
What happens with a ten? Car rolled Armor of 4, so hit for 6 + 4 = 10 shifts. Major consequence and a spin aspect. Blown tire and “Ditched it”.
Simon and Ana see the car swerve so they duck and run. When the sound gets to the house, the field workers hit the deck and the guards mobilize. The lady and her guards swear and the guards head for the house.
Ana and Simon beat feet for the road to find a car to hijack. No problem with the survival…
Apparently no one saw them because they head off the hill the safe way. They duck out between the truck and town. They get to the next manor house and spot a car in the driveway…engineering rolls -5 and 0. They break out the window and the alarm goes off…there is shouting from the second story window when Simon recognizes the guy from the party.
Dude: Hey, you’re that Texan from the party! What are you doing to my car?
Ana: Throw us the keys and get back in your room (aims rifle).
She taps “Femme Fatale”; he whimpers and throws the keys down to them.
They hop in and speed off for town. Eventually Morris’s radio crackles to life (12:30 or so).
Morris throws the gear and fake money into our new truck, collects Rene, and we head out. Simon tells us that we may have found Mamba…but we’ll need to follow it and be careful about how we tail. The truck Morris bought is unfamiliar and kind of crappy, so we could always pretend to be sidelined.
First we have to get there…how will we get access to it once it gets there?
BTW, Simon does know the license plate of the truck.
Rene and Morris jump into the truck and will approach Browntown from the other direction (like the airport)…Simon heads right back. Is the truck even still there? As they head towards the plantation, they spot the truck on the road. Someone’s working on the tire after a couple dozen people shoved it out the ditch. It *appears* it was unloaded, then moved, and will be re-loaded. They stop and radio that the truck is going to move, not sure where the lady is, and that Morris and Rene should wait. We guess where she’ll be, and the truck parks on the edge of town in wait.
In about an hour, a truck loaded with bananas flies out of Browntown. Morris and Rene start to tail them and call to Simon and Ana.
We need to make Yawn Stealth rolls to track the truck, and with the assistance of our radios we manage to pull it off (barely). We follow the truck up to the coast and up to Ocho Rios…who’s driving? Well, it’s an attractive black lady with huge glasses and a bigger afro. A couple of her heavies are in the car.
We continue heading east up the coast, leapfrogging her…and eventually we get to Ian Fleming Airport (that poser).
Morris says it would be the easiest thing in the world for him to act like an airplane mechanic…because he is. If he can get onto the airplane he should be able to spray the money.
Ana wonders about going onto the roof and assembling her snipel rifle. Simon loses track of her, because apparently she’s gone…to the roof.
Rene tells Morris to drive over to the gate. We pull up to the gate, and Rene starts going on about a warranty claim for a Cessna 172…blah blah.
We convince him that we’ll only be here a little bit, What Red Tape, I’ve got Just the Thing for that, etc.
Simon spots the banana truck pull up to a standard cargo plane, and he radios over to Morris and Rene. The lady hops out and starts directing some people to load the “bananas” onto the cargo plane. Morris and Rene park near the plane…the guys loading the plane get back in the truck and drive away…the lady goes into the airport. Simon decides to head inside to follow her…Rene goes into a small hangar to find something to wear.
Rene and Morris head inside and find the banana crates while the maintenance guy goes to get the copilot. Rene will knock over some tools, create a distraction, etc while Morris finds and breaks into the “banana” crate. +3 engineering…plus a Fate point of “I want to leave my children a better world”…Morris slides the tracer money and a good spray of radioactivity to boot.
We’re coming down the ramp as the copilot says, “Everything ok? This plane was already pre-checked.”
We apologize, and he gives us the stink eye, but we depart after apologizing about a waste of an afternoon.
Meanwhile, Ana finally responds and says she’s coming down. Simon watches the lady go to the counter, buys a boarding pass, and she heads into the terminal. Ana runs into the terminal with her case.
Simon: We’re going to have to arrest her. Do this quietly…she’s coming with us.
The two of them surround “Mamba”…does she notice them first? Stealth or deceit…Ana spends a fate point “house wife”…4 + 1 + 2 = 7. That gets her Swing die back…
Simon and Ana sidle up right next and quietly whisper, “You’re coming with us.” Intimidate Yawn…no, Swing! More like a 4.
She, the presumed Ms. Mamba, turns and smiles. She busts out her Street Smarts and says, “If you don’t take that gun out of my ribs, the people watching will gun you down. Stay out of this.”
Simon attempts to Cold Read Ms. Mamba…nothing.
Init: Simon 3, Ana 4. She’s first.
She sprints down the corridor, screaming. “They’re trying to rob me!”
Apparently Ms. Mamba had no interest in a social combat. Ana chases after and will attempt to tackle. Probably a chase scene, then
We’ll pick it up here…no Mitch next week. Week after (Thanksgiving), no Mitch.
